Crowds turn out for Maroween - 2nd Nov 2017

The neighbouring village of Maro held its annual chestnut and sweet potato festival this week, mixing the event as usual with a ghoulish Halloween theme. The festival once again proved popular with locals and visitors with a total of 800 kilos of chestnuts and sweet potatoes being served up to those who made it to the streets of the village. As with every year the organisers would like to thank all those who made it a success including the organising committee, local police and protection civil, sponsors and everybody involved in providing the diverse selection of activities.

Nerja receives new funds from provincial council - 31st Oct 2017

It's been announced that Nerja is to be one of four municipalities in the region to receive extra funding from the provincial council to make up for narrowly missing out on an earlier economic assistance scheme. The populations of Nerja, Cártama, Alhaurín el Grande and Coín all surpass 20,000 registered residents meaning they were excluded from the provincial assistance and cooperation plan which saw millions of euros distributed to towns and urban areas throughout the province of Málaga. The four will share just over €1.1 million with each receiving €280,000 to be spent on whatever the respective town halls consider their highest priority.

Blood donation service returns this week - 26th Oct 2017

Malaga's blood donation service will return to the municipality tomorrow as part of its latest campaign to bolster the blood reserves of the province. Once again those wishing to donate can do so in the offices of El Salvador church either in the morning or afternoon from 10am until 2pm and again from 5pm until 9pm. Members of the service wish to remind those individuals interested in donating that women should only donate up to three times per year and men a maximum of four.

Water treatment plant works restart - 25th Oct 2017

This week representatives of the ministry for the environment confirmed that work will begin again on the towns water treatment plant after months of paralysis. The announcement comes following efforts by the ministry to find a way forwards despite the economic problems of the construction consortium which forced work to stop in January of this year. Once permissions are issued by the town hall work can start on the pumping stations located throughout the town leading to the expected completion of the project by the end of 2018.

Nerja athletes dominate Málaga road race - 23rd Oct 2017

Last Sunday brought almost 20,000 thousand runners to the streets of Málaga in the 39th Málaga road race. The event was once again dominated by members of the Nerja athletics club with four local runners coming in the top ten. Both men's and women's races were won by Nerja athletes with Abdelhadi El Mouaziz winning the men's event for the fifth consecutive year and Rebeca García winning the women's race just ahead of her teammate María del Mar Serrano.

4x4 hobbyists arrange event this weekend - 19th Oct 2017

The Nerja 4x4 hobby club is holding another meetup for enthusiasts this weekend with their KDD Villa de Nerja 4x4 event including exhibition and night time route. The club is looking to make the event bigger and better than last years, beating the record of 400 registered participants. Entrance for car and driver is €35 and €15 for any accompanying persons. As well as the activities this includes lunch, dinner, various event related gifts and a €5 donation to a cancer research charity (AECC) .

Water company advises residents of supply interruptions - 18th Oct 2017

The Narixa water company is advising residents and businesses in and around Calle Almeria in Nerja to expect temporary supply cuts today and Thursday. The supply interruptions are expected between 8am and 3pm and come as a consequence of work to improve the water distribution system in the area. Once supplies have been re-established customers are advised to let the water run for at least five minutes.

Good weekend for Nerja athletics club - 13th Oct 2017

Last weekend saw the final regional athletics events of the 2016/2017 season being held with good results for the Nerja club. Two running events brought the athletics season to an end with Trail Ciudad de Malaga, which covered a 30km distance, bringing three golds for club members in their respective age categories and an overall second place for Daniel Moreno. Meanwhile Cristobal Ortigosa took the overall gold in the Malaga half marathon with fellow club members José M. Sánchez and José M. Ruiz also collecting medals in their respective categories.

Town hall announces new equipment for police - 3rd Oct 2017

The local police announced today that it has applied to the regional authorities for new equipment totalling €470,000. The application, which was made in conjunction with the local council, hopes to expand upon the equipment the police currently have available in order to speed up everyday tasks, improving efficiency and freeing up valuable resources for use elsewhere. The proposal includes new CCTV surveillance cameras, PDAs to speed up on the spot fines, an improved communications system and new laser equipment to catch speeding motorists.

Nerja fined by regional authority - 29th Sep 2017

The Junta de Andalucia has announced that it has begun the paperwork to impose penalties on ten municipalities in the province with Nerja being one of those effected. The authority has started the proceedings against councils that are causing unacceptable pollution to coastal waters by failing to meet minimum standards of sewage treatment. Nerja continues to be the only municipality on the coast which pumps sewage untreated into the sea due to the administrative and financial problems which have paralysed the construction of the areas water treatment facility which began in 2014.

Museum visitors numbers hit record highs - 28th Sep 2017

Nerja's natural history museum in Plaza de España set a new all time record for visitor numbers this summer with 26,918 individuals walking through the doors. The period from June 15th to September 15th saw a 19.09% increase on the same period last year with August showing a particularly strong increase. The improving visitor numbers are part of a longer trend which started in 2015 with a number of new initiatives. Since then numbers have increased to over four times what they were in 2014 with improved levels of visitor satisfaction also being reported.

New exhibition in Calle Cristo hall - 26th Sep 2017

Nerja's latest art exhibition will open tomorrow with Paco Hernández presenting his exhibition entitled Serpentina. The artist explained that his collection "fundamentally pursues beauty" focusing on what he described as "timeless elements" from nature such as plants, clouds and human beings with a Hellenic basis. The exhibition, which will be open until the 14th October in the Calle Cristo municipal hall, can be visited from 11:00 until 13:30 and from 18:00 until 21:30.
