Coastal cleaning operation begins - 19th Jun 2017
The president of the organisation for the coastal communities of the Axarquia along with other local officials has announced that this years sea surface cleaning operation has begun. The initiative uses boats to skim rubbish from the waters surface all along the 46km Axarquia coastline from Rincon de la Victoria to Nerja keeping the water in the best condition possible during the peak tourism months. This year the service has been improved with three new boats in addition to the existing eleven which were in operation last year and will continue until the 15th September. In Torrox and Nerja the boats will be active Mondays to Fridays from 11am until 7pm.
Regional council monitors air quality - 15th Jun 2017
The Malaga regional council has taken steps in recent days to monitor the air quality in Nerja and the wider area as part of an initiative which will see samples taken during the next six months. Six static sensor units have been installed in various rural locations throughout the province including El Pinarillo picnic area here in Nerja with another ten mobile units providing extra data. Marina Bravo, councillor for the environment, explained that the data provided by the sensors will go towards developing proposals to protect and enhance some of the most beautiful and popular natural spaces on the coast whilst providing evidence of the impact of tourism on the provinces countryside.
Local man dies in motorway accident - 13th Jun 2017
A Nerja resident died in an accident in the early hours of Monday morning on the motorway between Nerja and Torrox. The individual who was forty six and is currently being identified as M.L.T was hit by a vehicle at twelve fifteen near the 291 kilometre marker. The victim is believed to have fallen from his motorbike on the motorway heading towards Nerja and been hit by the car which was unable to swerve in time to avoid him.
Fernando Dols photographic exhibition opens - 9th Jun 2017
On Wednesday local photographer Fernando Dols opened a new exhibition in the Cultural Centre's exhibition space called "Remembering the past". The collection, which will remain open until the end of July, is primarily made up of images relating to the sea and in particular the open top fishing boats which are typically found in the region. The subject provokes particular nostalgia for the artist with his early years spent fishing with his father and come from a wider collection of over 3,000 images taken in Nerja and other Costa del Sol towns and villages.
Over 40 medals in one weekend for Nerja athletics club - 7th Jun 2017
Nerja's high achieving athletics club enjoyed another successful event in San Fernando over the weekend at the Andalusian championship for under 23's. Around 350 athletes travelled to the province of Cadiz for the event which saw Nerja club members take a total of 23 medals, thirteen of which were gold. This was added to by the veteran members who were in action in Isla Cristina, Huelva taking 21 medals in total, thirteen of which were gold.
Guardia Civil officers catch drug smugglers in the act - 5th Jun 2017
In the latest operation combating drug smugglers operating on the Costa the del Sol officers from the Guardia Civil interrupted two individuals unloading a boat in the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo natural park in the early hours of Friday morning. The smugglers were caught removing 19 packets of hachis from an inflatable zodiac style boat which was picked up by marine officers and tracked to La Cala del Pino beach. Once the haul was removed and weighed it was revealed that the operation had seized some 600 kilos of illegal drugs.
Approved busker list announced - 2nd Jun 2017
A council representative has announced that from the auditions that were recently held to select licensed buskers a total of 16 acts have been chosen to perform in various locations around the town. The artists can begin performing from June 1st until the end of September from 11am until 3pm and again from 7pm until midnight. The performers are now free to pay their fees and collect their licenses.
Fire breaks out in Calle Pintada - 1st Jun 2017
A fire broke out today at around 2pm in a commercial premises located in Calle Pintada. The fire which sent a plume of thick black smoke into the air alarming many of the residents of the street and surrounding area injured the owner and caused considerable damage. Officers from the Guardia Civil, Local Police and fire service attended the scene with early indicators being that the fires origin was a deep fat fryer.
Weekend success for X-Bike Nejra - 29th May 2017
Last weekend once again brought success for the X-Bike cycle club with junior member Nicolás Bobdailla taking the title of Andalucian champion in the rally category in an event hosted in Puerto de Santa Maria. This was the second such success for the young rider who already took another Andalucian title earlier this year at an event in San Fernando.
Regional fire service prepares for summer wild fires - 25th May 2017
Tomorrow the regional authorities will stage a drill in Capistrano to help asses the capabilities of the fire fighting services to deal with the annual problem of wildfires. Capistrano was chosen due to the proximity of dry scrub land and an established urban area which is classified as an interface zone in relation to such fires. The exercise will help in the evaluation of existing practices as well as providing valuable information to help improve response times and overall efficiency in dealing with fires which can quickly spread. Over one hundred individuals will be taking part in the drill from all branches of the 112 emergency services.
Nerja's latest dance festival begins this week - 22nd May 2017
This Friday Nerja will present it's latest dance festival with students from local dance schools performing in the cultural centre and on the Balcon de Europa. The main performances will take place on Friday and Saturday however the Fernando Hurtado dance company will continue the activities with a series of workshops from the 29th until the 31st in local schools. Entrance to all performances is free.
Mini earthquake hits Nerja overnight - 18th May 2017
A small earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale was felt in the early hours at 12:07 this morning. The tremor was reported by numerous Nerja residents and was later confirmed by the Andalucian seismic agency reporting that the epicentre had been in the Alhama de Granada area at a depth of 12km. The tremors were reported all over the region with the greatest effects felt in Torre del Mar, Velez-Malaga and Malaga capital although there appear to have been no related damages.
