New photographic exhibition opens - 5th Apr 2017
A new collection of photographs from the nearby natural parks was opened for public viewing yesterday in the Nerja Cultural Centre. The collection of images captured by Nerja photographic club member José Antonio Montilla have as their subject the Ibex or Spanish wild goat which is typically found in the area but currently causing concern due to a significant decline in the male population thanks to unsustainable hunting. The exhibition will remain open until the 3rd June.
Calle Diputacion closure dates change - 3rd Apr 2017
In a change to the usual arrangements the local council has decided to alter the summer closing schedule for Calle Diputacion to allow the familiar ethnic market stalls to operate during the busy Easter period. As a result the street will be closed from 5pm until 3am each day from the 7th of April until the end of October.
Jazz music returns to the cultural centre - 30th Mar 2017
Tomorrow evening at 9pm the Farataos Jazz band will come to the Nerja cultural centre to give a concert from 9pm. The band takes its inspiration from the jazz music of the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s incorporating both the dixie and New Orleans styles. Tickets are available from the centres box office at a cost of €10.
Residents day festival this weekend - 29th Mar 2017
This Sunday brings the latest edition of the Nerja Residents day festival where the food, drink, culture and traditions of the many foreign resident's of the municipality are put on display. Once again the festival will take place in Plaza de España near to the Balcón de Europa and alongside the various bars and stalls will include music and dancing throughout the day. Activities begin at 12 noon and continue until 5pm.
Nerja athlete wins Málaga half marathon - 27th Mar 2017
For what is now the seventh time, Nerja athletics club runner Abdelhadi El Mouaziz won the Málaga half marathon on Sunday. He took the line in a time of 1:06:36 on a day that saw considerable success for the club as a whole with four other club members finishing in the top fifteen. El Mouaziz remains on course to fulfil the promise he made last year not to relinquish his winners crown until 2020.
Traffic accident closes N340 coastal road - 25th Mar 2017
The N340 coastal road was closed on Friday evening due to a severe traffic accident just a stones throw from the Hotel Marinas de Nerja. The accident involved two vehicles and took place at around 7:30pm with one of the drivers requiring the assistance of the emergency services get out of their damaged car. The road remained closed whilst the vehicles were removed.
Auditions for buskers - 22nd Mar 2017
Today the council held auditions in the cultural centre for local buskers who wish to perform in the municipality's streets during the summer period. Some thirty performers turned up to be scrutinized by teachers from the municipal music school with performances continuing until 2pm this afternoon. Those making the grade received licenses allowing them to perform on the streets of Nerja.
Residents vote for new street names - 20th Mar 2017
Tomorrow the Nerja town hall will open the voting period for residents to decide on new names for the streets García Alted and General Asensio Cabanillas, which were named after two leaders in the Franco regime. Voters, who must be of legal voting age and registered with the town hall as resident (empadronado), will have eleven possible names to choose from ranging from country names, historical figures and even a national celebrity. Voting will take place in the main town hall building from 9am until 2pm each day until Thursday.
Construction plans for Los Huertos car park - 16th Mar 2017
The owners of the large Los Huertos car park in the centre of Nerja which also serves as the main site for the annual Nerja Feria have submitted an application to the Nerja town hall to make changes to the lands legal classification. They're seeking to change its status to that of urban land which would allow them restart a earlier housing development plan which would see the 36,000m site turned into 290 residential houses.
Nerja athlete wins Miami beach half marathon - 14th Mar 2017
Local athlete Francisco Urbano has won this years Miami beach half marathon which was held earlier this month on the 4th. El Pulguilla as he is known locally crossed the line in one hour fifteen minutes almost four minutes ahead of Timothy Nichols who finished in second place. Following the race the winner remarked on how important it was for him that a Nerja athletics club jersey won such a race in the US.
Fire fighters protest over delays to new fire station - 13th Mar 2017
Last wednesday fire fighters from the provincial fire fighters association based in Nerja held a protest on the Burriana roundabout outside their current makeshift headquarters. The protest took place on the day of the services patron saint to draw attention to the considerable delays to the completion of the new fire service complex on the Frigiliana road. The new facility is almost complete with only 5% of the works still to carry out yet has stood in the same state for over a year with work paralysed due miscommunication between the various public bodies which are co-financing the project. The fire fighters point out that their current temporary home does not fulfil the minimum health and safety requirements and that a solution to the ongoing problem must be found.
Police tribute band give concert - 9th Mar 2017
Fans of the 80's band the The Police are in for a treat this evening with the tribute band The Cops playing in the Nerja Cultural Centre this evening. The set will include the best known songs of the group including Message in a bottle, Roxanne and Every breath you take. The concert starts at 9pm with entrance costing €10.
