Nerja publicised in Madrid metro - 23rd Jan 2018

The municipality is set to get greater exposure amongst residents of Madrid in coming months with eleven new posters being installed in the city's metro system. The posters measure approximately 2m x 1.5m and promote the most emblematic areas of the town such as the Balcón de Europa and Nerja Caves. The move comes hot on the heels of Tripadvisor's latest world destination rankings which placed Nerja in its top 10 for emerging destinations.

Water treatment plant works resume - 18th Jan 2018

Following a meeting earlier this week between Nerja's councillor for infrastructure, engineers and other local officials work on the pumping stations for Nerja's long awaited water treatment plant will begin again on Monday 22nd. Discussions were focussed on necessary road closures, diversions and how to keep disruption to a minimum for residents and businesses. Councillor José María Rivas recently expressed his concern at the lack of preparation for the resuming works following the resolution of financial difficulties which have kept the project paralysed for approximately 12 months.

Nerja continues to attract the cameras - 16th Jan 2018

In the coming weeks Nerja will once again provide the ideal location for a television production with Fresco Film Services selecting the town and surrounding area as the location for scenes in the second season of "Snatch". The film crew will be active in the municipality from the 22nd January until the 15th May using the Balcon de Europa, cafeteria Plaza Cavana and La Alberquilla beach on the outskirts of Maro. Nerja was chosen by the company ahead of various other locations including Catalonia and the Caribbean.

Carnival poster unveiled - 12th Jan 2018

The official poster to promote this years carnival was unveiled today by its creator Jesús Muñoz alongside councillor Patricia Gutiérrez and members of the fiestas and ferias committee. This years poster is filled with tiny details brought together in one colourful and eye catching design which the artist hopes will attract the eye for closer inspection. The 2018 carnival will start on the 8th of February and continue until the 11th. To find out more and to see pictures from previous years take a look at our carnival page.

Nerja makes Tripadvisor top 10 - 10th Jan 2018

In their 2018 emerging destinations listing the travel website Tripadvisor has ranked Nerja amongst its top destinations in the world. Nerja which came in 9th place after Rovinj in Croatia and just before Casablanca in Morocco was the only Spanish destination to make the top 10 of the list giving the municipality world wide recognition and publicity. The ranking is based upon visitor satisfaction as measured by the Tripadvisor site taking into account opinions on accommodation, restaurants, places of interest and reservation numbers. The town council expressed their satisfaction at news of the listing and highlighted the continual work that they and other organisations undertake to make such successes possible.

Latest exhibition opens in Municipal hall - 8th Jan 2018

This week a new exhibition of paintings will open in Nerja in the Municipal hall in Calle Cristo. The collection created by Marie José Larousse y Francine Raguet is made up of various techniques including pastels and oils with a variety of subjects ranging from taverns and portraits to images of landscapes and the natural world . The exhibition is open to the public both mornings and evenings from 11am until 2pm and from 5pm until 8pm.

Botanical garden proves popular - 4th Jan 2018

The Botanical garden at the Nerja caves complex has registered some 10,000 visitors since its opening in June of last year. The garden, which measures 3 hectares in size, is part of a chain of similar schemes in the region which aim to exhibit and protect the various species that make up the flora of Andalucia whilst also providing a facility to teach visitors about the local environment. The garden is split up into four zones and designed to be accessible to all members of the public.

Town hall starts an early spring clean - 2nd Jan 2018

José María Rivas councillor for infrastructure at the town hall reported today that the authorities have begun a clean up of public spaces. The project, which is primarily aimed at out of town agricultural areas, is part of a wider joint initiative between the employment services, Junta de Andalucia and Malaga regional council aiming to provide work for unemployed agricultural workers. The operation which is already in its second month is expected to take four months in total and provide work for some 45 individuals.

New fire fighters complex takes final step towards operation - 20th Dec 2017

The mayoress of Nerja Rosa Arrabal visited the brand new firefighters complex on the western edge of Nerja yesterday as part of the latest step towards the opening of the facility. The mayoress along with other local and regional officials took a tour of the €1.2 million park and signed papers bringing an end to over two years of delays. With the way now clear for the fire fighting team to move in, it is expected to be up and running by the end of January.

Houses finally connected to drinkable water grid - 15th Dec 2017

Councillor for health and infrastructure José María Rivas today announced that upgrades to the municipal water system meant that houses that had previously only received a supply of non-drinkable water were now fully connected to same system as the rest of the municipality. Some 2000 homes on the northern border of Nerja are effected, with upgrades to equipment meaning sufficient pressure now exists to pump the water up the long hills in the area. Residents of the area can get more information about the upgrades from the Aguas de Narixa office in Calle Malaga.

Chess club announces January tournament - 13th Dec 2017

The sign-up period for Nerja's 12th "Memorial Jan Hiemstra" chess tournament, organised by the Balcon de Europa chess club, opened today. Those interested in taking part will have up to the 11th of January to put their names down for the tournament that will get started on the 18th with games being played every Thursday from 5pm until May. Christmas program now available - 11th Dec 2017

The town council has now released the official program of events for this years Christmas celebrations. As always they include concerts, children's activities and the traditional Santa Claus and Three Kings parades. Take a look at what to see and where on our page here.
