Thousands of shoes collected in river clean-up - 8th Aug 2017
With the ever increasing popularity of the Rio Chillar as a summer excursion the town hall has been forced to up its game in the recent years to remove rubbish left behind by visitors. In the second cleaning operation carried out so far this summer thousands of shoes have been collected, left behind by visitors who've completed the trek. The custom of tying the shoes together and throwing them over cables and power lines, leaving them hanging, has become yet another unexpected consequence of the rivers popularity. The town hall is once again urging residents and visitors to take responsibility for the upkeep of the river, to maintain the area free of rubbish and in it's natural state. The next cleaning operation to be carried out by the authorities is scheduled for September.
