Maro prepares for annual Feria - 7th Sep 2016
The initial acts of this years Feria de las Maravillas began today in the neighbouring village of Maro and will continue until Saturday evening. Each year the village honours the Virgin of Wonders with four days of celebrations including local music, food and dancing in the village square as well as a small children's fairground and annual sporting challenges with the main event of the procession of the Virgin through the village streets on Thursday evening. This year the town hall has provided a bus service to easily get to and from the village over the feria period running from 8:30pm until 3am each day and costing €1,50.
Nerja sets new hotel occupancy record - 5th Sep 2016
According to information supplied by the municipal tourism office Nerja enjoyed an excellent August this year with hotel occupancy reaching almost 96%. The figure was approximately 3% up on the previous month and 0.5% up on August of last year. This statistic is particularly significant though as it breaks the previous record for the maximum hotel occupancy registered in the town which was set almost 10 years ago.
Los Castillejos cycle race takes place this Sunday - 1st Sep 2016
This weekend will see hundreds of cyclists take part in the second Los Castillejos cycle race starting out from Plaza de España at 10:30 on Sunday morning. Up to 350 cyclists can sign up for the event which will take the participants through the spectacular mountain terrain of the nearby natural park before returning to Nerja and the finish. The sign up period is still open with the only restriction being that entrants must be over 15 years old.
Ruta 340 organises another biker breakfast - 30th Aug 2016
Motorcycle enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that the Ruta 340 biker shop is organising another event for the weekend to be held outside their shop in Torrox Costa. As always there will be bikes a plenty on display, live music, food and drink for the ticket price of €10. Local animal rescue charities are also involved and will be collecting donations of dog food from anybody who wishes to contribute.
Local girl retains national title - 29th Aug 2016
Last weekend local beach volleyball player Ana Lobato retained her title as national champion along with her teammate Paula Soria in the final of this years championships. The duo took the initiative early in the final, gaining the advantage in the first set and carrying the momentum into the second leading to a decisive win in two straight sets. The competition was held along the coast in Fuengirola on Sunday and saw both the female and male teams retain their crowns from the previous year.
Frigiliana three cultures festival starts today - 25th Aug 2016
The eleventh edition of the Three Cultures festival started today in the neighbouring village of Frigiliana with food, music and dancing from the regions past on display. The annual event which grows in popularity year on year will continue through the weekend closing late on Sunday night. With a regular bus service between Nerja and Frigiliana it's easy to get to and well worth a visit so take a look at our Three Cultures page for more information!
Nerja prepares for annual beach race - 23rd Aug 2016
This weekend Burriana beach will once again play host to Nerja's annual "half league" foot race in honour of Francisco Ortega, otherwise known as "Ayo". The event which is split up into numerous categories and draws athletes from all over Andalucia will begin at 7pm starting with the youngest runners, moving through the various age groups until the veterans set off in the final race of the evening. Anybody can take part though and the inscription period will remain open until one hour before the races begin. If you're interested in taking part pop into Ayo's chiringuito on Burriana and sign up!
Local hotels enjoy bumper July - 22nd Aug 2016
Last months hotel occupancy figures showed that for the second consecutive year hotels in the municipality reached an average occupancy rate of 93% for the month of July. The statistics showed that Spanish and British holiday makers made up the bulk of the registered visitors accounting for approximately two thirds of the total whilst the Irish, French, Germans and Scandinavians made up much of the remaining numbers. Patricia Gutiérrez Román who has been councillor for tourism for the last two years expressed her satisfaction at this years numbers highlighting the 7% increase since 2014.
Exhibition of young artists work opens - 19th Aug 2016
A new exhibition of work by young Málaga artists has opened this week in the Sala Mercado. The collection which is part of a wider project to support local artists from the ages of 16 to 35 will be on display until the 28th of the month and will include works from various categories including graphic art, scenic art, visual arts, music and film amongst others. Works from this years intake, which is now in its third edition, will go on to be judged by important cultural and artistic figures from Málaga with those showing special merit going on to attend a gala night on the 30th September.
Weekend volleyball tournament postponed - 17th Aug 2016
The sports department of the town hall has announced that the Nerja 2016 mixed volleyball tournament planned for the weekend of the 27th and 28th has now been moved to the following weekend. Due to this the start time for the tournament has also changed and is now set to begin at 5pm to take advantage of the floodlights available on the pitches.
Regional campaign to promote recycling comes to Nerja - 16th Aug 2016
Ecoembes a non-profit organisation in conjunction with the Málaga regional government has today begun a new recycling initiative called "Reciclaplus" to encourage the populations of the various municipalities to recycle more and smarter. The initiative is based around a mobile learning centre which aims to educate residents in the recycling process and teach local children of the importance of recycling, getting them into good habits from an early age. The exhibition which was today visiting Ronda will soon come to Nerja and challenge the municipality to recycle 10% of its plastics over a 3 month period. Those municipalities that meet the challenge will receive funds for local charities and social initiatives.
Lifeguards recommend issuing fines - 12th Aug 2016
Lifeguard services in various municipalities have taken a tougher stance against swimmers this summer recommending to local councils the idea of imposing fines upon beach goers who ignore instructions. The suggested fines which range from €300 to €3000 are currently under consideration in a number of coastal towns including Torrox, Torremolinos and Benalmádena with Vélez-Málaga already preparing new bye-laws. The authorities here in Nerja have announced no such plans so far however with recent rescues required due to swimmers ignoring clear red flag warnings it remains a possibility.
