Nerja ticket wins ONCE lottery - 12th Jan 2017

An ONCE coupon sold in Nerja on the 10th of January has won a 35,000 euro prize. The coupon, which was sold at the kiosk on Calle Antonio Millón by María Nieves Pérez Rico was the latest in a string of wins in the municipality with previous wins of 175,000 and 350,000 euros in recent years.

Javier Rueda opens exhibition - 10th Jan 2017

Nerja's latest exhibition will open tomorrow in the municipal hall in Calle Cristo. The artist Javier Rueda is putting a collection of his photographs on display with the collective title of "Interferences". The images make use of distortion to create a duality within each image, requiring the viewer to look deeper, provoking surprise and in some cases discomfort to catch the viewers attention. The exhibition will be open until the 25th of January and is well worth taking a look at. You can visit both mornings and evenings from 11am until 11:30am and from 6pm until 9pm.

Upgrades announced to municipal car park - 9th Jan 2017

Nerja's councillor for transport reported today that improvements have been made to the subterranean parking facility beneath Plaza de España. The changes included the fitting of new handrails on the access ramps leading into the facility and the application of a special non slip product on the paving in the same areas to provide more grip under foot. The measures were taken after a series on accidents suffered by users of the car park whilst descending the ramps, particularly in wet conditions.

Museum receives new exhibits - 5th Jan 2017

The Nerja museum has received four new exhibits to its collection in recent days intended to help demonstrate to visitors in a visual way the history, customs and traditions of the municipality and wider area. Frigiliana resident Aurelio Torres has donated three artefacts related to the towns agricultural development, more specifically tools used in the harvesting and processing of sugar cane to create molasses. A canon ball discovered at the feet of the Balcón de Europa, which was formerly the site of a gun battery, will also join the existing exhibits.

Street light improvements in Rodríguez Acosta - 3rd Jan 2017

Nerja's councillor for infrastructure José María Rivas Gálvez today announced planned improvements to the street lighting in Avenida Rodríguez Acosta. The upgrades which will see the installation of new energy efficient lighting will significantly reduce the long term lighting costs while reducing the amount of light pollution in area. The total cost of the upgrade is expected to be €75,000.

New funds approved for infrastructure investment - 30th Dec 2016

In the latest Málaga regional council meeting held on the 16th new funds were approved for financially sustainable projects in the province. Some thirty six proposals were approved for the funding which reaches a combined total of almost €3.5 million. In Nerja one such project was the redevelopment of the Plaza Antonio Machado which will receive €182,000.

Food bank appeal collects 300 kilos of donations - 28th Dec 2016

The Nerja Solidaria association which distributes food to the most needy in the area announced that in its second Christmas campaign local residents have donated 300 kilos of food in the various collection points. These were located in supermarkets throughout the municipality and manned by volunteers from a range of local groups over the last weekend of November.

Nerja athletes dominate Velez-Málaga road race - 23rd Dec 2016

In the annual San Silvestre road race held in Velez-Málaga yesterday the Nerja athletics club once again displayed its deep talent pool taking top spot in both the women's and men's events. The race which is now in its eighth edition was run over a 5km course starting and ending in Plaza de las Carmelitas in the centre of town. Álvaro Fernández in the veteran category came in first in the overall race while Irene Díaz was the first woman across the line in an overall 37th place.

Fire causes residential block evacuation - 19th Dec 2016

A residential block in the centre of Nerja was evacuated on Saturday morning as smoke rose through the building from a fire located on the ground floor. Some 30 residents were left watching as the fire service, accompanied by officers of the Guardia Civil and local police, tackled the fire which was caused by the careless use of an electric heater. A man of 65 and woman of 34 were taken to the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquia to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Urban mile road race sets off this Saturday - 15th Dec 2016

The thirty second edition of Nerja's annual Christmas road race will be taking place this Saturday with the athletes gathering at 4pm on the Balcón de Europa. The race, which will cover a distance of 1,609m, has been organised by the local athletics club and will be split up into various age categories (some with lesser distances) with races starting from 4:30pm. This is no typical athletics event though as the club will be offering a €100 cash prize for anybody who beats a current best category time as well as Christmas hams for the winners of individual races.

Junta offers help to upgrade greenhouses - 13th Dec 2016

The department for agriculture, fishing and rural development of the Junta de Andalucia has announced plans to provide financial assistance to farmers and growers who use greenhouses to more efficiently grow crops. The funds are destined to improve performance and sustainability and could potentially be as much as 50% of the amount required with an upper limit of €200,000. Applicants have until the 9th January to present the necessary paperwork with extra help available to young farmers.

Fireball lights up the night sky - 12th Dec 2016

In the late hours of yesterday evening a fragment of a comet lit up the night sky as it disintegrated in the earth's atmosphere. The fragment passed over the province of Málaga heading inland towards Jaén at around 10:30pm with an estimated initial speed of 130,000 km/h according to José María Madiedo, astrophysicist at the university of Huelva. The fragment was seen and heard all over the region with many reports of a roar accompanying the spectacle as it passed over Granada. This is the second such occurrence in the region in recent months after another fireball crossed the night sky on the 29th August.
