Photographic exhibition opens today - 8th Jun 2016

A new photographic exhibition of images from this years Villa de Nerja photographic competition will be inaugurated this evening in the Cultural Centre in Calle Granada. The exhibition, which is comprised of the final selection still in the running for the win, was drawn from some 200 entrants into this years competition now in its third edition. The collection includes images of Nerjas fiestas, beaches and pretty corners and will remain open to the public until the 29th July with the winner being announced at the opening ceremony.

Annual barbecue ban comes into effect - 3rd Jun 2016

Restrictions to prevent wild fires came into effect across Andalusia this week as part of an annual program which has lead to significant reductions in wildfire numbers since its adoption. Barbecues and fires of any sort are now prohibited in forests and scrub areas with even the use of motor vehicles in such areas disallowed by the authorities meaning that vehicles can no longer be used to reach the El Pinarillo picnic area in the nearby natural park. The restrictions will remain in place until 15th October with any exceptions requiring the explicit consent of the authorities.

Water treatment plant delays - 1st Jun 2016

Nerja will spend yet another summer without a functioning water treatment plant according to town hall sources. The plant which was expected to enter a testing period at the beginning of the year and be fully functional in time for the summer months has been plagued by a series of delays ranging from issues with local water collectors, intermediary pumping stations and miscalculations in the planning stages. Councillor José Maria Rivas has urged the construction company to do whatever is necessary to speed up the process amongst concerns over the company's financial situation following alarming media reports.

Nerja Caves receives certificate of excellence - 30th May 2016

It was announced today that for the third consecutive year the Nerja Caves has received Tripadvisor.com's certificate of excellence. The award, which is based on the opinions and reviews of visitors, was warmly received by Miguel Briones, president of the Nerja Caves foundation while Heather Leisman, marketing vice president, remarked on the importance of the award for generating confidence in potential visitors when it comes to reserving entrance tickets.

March against animal cruelty - 26th May 2016

Animal lovers will be gathering together this Sunday for the towns first march in defence of animal rights setting out from the town hall at around midday. The march, which will be just under a kilometre in length, will take a circular route around the town centre finishing on the Balcón de Europa. The organisers are encouraging all those that wish to take part in the event to arrive half an hour early at 11:30 am.

Nerja dance festival begins tomorrow - 25th May 2016

The latest edition of Nerja Danza will begin tomorrow with four days of indoor and outdoor dance performances scheduled to take place at sites around the municipality. At midday tomorrow the performances will begin with the Fernando Hurtado company offering the inaugural performance in the cultural centre with Marco Vargas and Chlóe Brûlé amongst others performing on the Balcón de Europa later in the day. Each day of the festival will bring multiple free to enter performances so it's well worth passing by the tourist office for this years events program.

Junta allocates new social inclusion funds - 23rd May 2016

Today the Junta de Andalucia announced how it intends to divide up its social inclusion budget in the Axarquia region with Nerja set to receive €95,000 and neighbouring Torrox €72,000. The funds, which will primarily by used to help businesses take on more staff and prevent social exclusion amongst the unemployed will also come with the condition that the activities undertaken must hold a special interest for the community as a whole, making the most of the funds on offer. Certain groups are given priority in the initiative with individuals from households where all members are unemployed, sufferers of domestic abuse and the disabled amongst those that have a better chance of being accepted.

New push begins to improve Nerja's coastal walking paths - 20th May 2016

Nerja's coastline went under inspection today by officials from the regions coastal agency. Local councillors and municipal technicians joined coastal engineers in a check-up of a number of the municipality's most popular areas including Caletilla and Salón beaches, La Caleta beach in Maro and the long time closed coastal walkway, Carabineros. The visit comes as a pre-cursor to plans for sustainable development of the areas, firstly to stabilise rocky slopes before further development with new walkways, viewpoints and gardens to greater enhance the coastline for residents and visitors.

Scuba club gears up for environmental clean-up - 17th May 2016

Once again Buceo Costa Nerja has teamed up with the local council to organise another sea bed and coastal clean-up. This Sunday anybody motivated to keep the local environment in top condition can join the event either under water, by Kayak or on foot scouring the beaches and rocks for plastic bottles, plastic bags and anything else that shouldn't be there. Roadworks underway throughout the municipality - 16th May 2016

A town hall representative today confirmed that work has already begun in various locations throughout the municipality to modify pavements in key areas of the town. The improvements aim to make getting around Nerja easier for both residents and visitors who suffer from a physical disability which hampers their mobility. Although not all areas which pose a problem can be modified a number of stretches of pavement have been selected to have mini ramps set up or where possible their overall height reduced.

San Isidro procession this weekend - 13th May 2016

Nerja athletes travel to Ronda - 12th May 2016

This Saturday 29 local athletes will travel to Ronda to take part in the gruelling Legión de Ronda 101km challenge in which entrants have 24 hours to cover the 101km distance in one of various categories. The event which is now in its 19th year has grown in popularity on each edition with places for the individual foot race category being snapped up just 42 seconds after they became available to the public. The 23 men and 6 women met today at the Enrique López Cuenca stadium to finalise the weekends arrangements and to take part in a group photo for local newspapers.
