Police receive new vehicle - 5th Apr 2016
Today the local police took possession of a new vehicle from the Director General de Trafico, the government body that is responsible for the Spanish transport network. The car was delivered by Trinidad Hernández, provincial head of the traffic authority in Málaga and comes equipped with radar scanners to catch speeding motorists as well as road side breathalyser testers. The car was officially received by local police chief Miguel Ãngel GarcÃa Cortés and Nerja councillor Cristina Fernández Pinto.
Spring festival 2016 - 4th Apr 2016
The youth department of the town hall has announced that the 4th edition of the increasingly popular Spring Party will be held on Saturday the 23rd of April from 1pm until 11pm. The party, which is organised in conjunction with the various bars and establishments of Plaza Tutti Frutti, will have live music from 'Al Aire Libre', resident DJ's from the nearby bars and free paella for those that attend!
Easter week attracts visitors - 1st Apr 2016
The town hall has released figures today showing that hotel occupancy in the municipality over the Easter period reached a high point of 95.77%. The average occupancy during the seven day period was 90% with the most popular hotels and hostels recording an impressive 95% rate over the same period. Although the figures during this period often reach such heights this year stands out as particularly encouraging with the Semana Santa this year falling in march which has always tended to lead to sub 90% figures.
Light and Colour on display in new exhibition - 29th Mar 2016
Lola and Ana Garcés opened a joint exhibition of their work in the town today at the Sala Municipal in Calle Almirante Ferrándiz. The exhibition, which is called 'Formas, Luz y Color' will be open until the 17th of April and feature two different disciplines with Lola presenting a collection of paintings from her 30 years as a developing artist while Ana displays a number of decorative lamps created with a wide range of materials to create different reflections and projections of colour. If you're interested in taking a look you can go along between 11:30 and 2pm and again from 6pm until 9:30.
Outdoor meditation with Foro ACCE - 24th Mar 2016
In what is becoming a monthly event the Foro ACCE has organised another guided meditation session for the final Sunday of the month in the gardens of the Nerja Caves complex this weekend. The group, which embraces art, culture, science and spirituality, invites everybody interested to join them at 18:15 for the free activity. They recommend wearing loose clothing and bringing a floor mat and cushion.
Subterranean car park closed over Easter - 22nd Mar 2016
Burriana's subterranean parking facility is to be closed during the Easter period for improvements ahead of the busy summer months according to a council representative. The new facility, which has been open for just over a year, is to undergo upgrades to cope with deficiencies discovered during the winter months. Improvements to flood protection measures on the lowest level as well as security improvements for users and staff will be introduced as well as a an ADSL connection for card payments.
Town council show disapproval of refugee deal - 18th Mar 2016
A representative of the administration has announced that the European flag will be removed from the flag poles over the town hall arch near the Balcón de Europa in protest over the recently agreed upon deal between the EU and Turkey concerning the treatment of refugees entering Europe. The move comes at the suggestion of councillor Cristina Fernández Pinto of the Espacio Verde (EVA) political party as the council aims to raise awareness of the problem amongst the local population. The flag will remain absent until the 21st of March when it will be re-raised.
Sustainability plan approved - 17th Mar 2016
Following a meeting yesterday in the cultural centre, Nerja's sustainability forum have approved the contents of the municipality's action plan ready for submission to the town council for final approval. The document, which will provide a framework for the continuing development of the town, aims to balance local social, economic, urban and environmental issues to provide a fundamental reference over the coming years. The document, which is considered a basic tool in the sustainable development of the town, is available for all residents who are interested in the medium to long term future of Nerja.
La Ermita concert this Friday - 16th Mar 2016
This Friday the 'Duo Ramirez' will give a classical concert in one of the towns most beautiful buildings, La Ermita in Plaza de la Ermita. The brothers, who play guitar and flute, will perform a selection of music including pieces by Vivaldi, Scarlatti and Bach from 8pm onwards. If you'd like to attend the concert be sure to get there early as seating is very limited.
Local Karate kids take top spots - 15th Mar 2016
Nerja's GYM Nerja Karate team had a fantastic result at the Andalucian championship held in Priego de Cordoba last weekend with four first place finishes going to club members. SofÃa Ortega, Ana Cabra, Daniel Bacas and Franco RodrÃguez all reached the top spot in their various age and weight categories with two more club members Keyti Askhan and Juan Magaña also getting third place finishes. The success was particularly well timed with Andalucia team selectors currently making decisions on who will represent the region at the up coming national championships in Murcia on the 23rd and 24th of April.
Narixa cycle club enjoys weekend success - 9th Mar 2016
Last weekend the Málaga provincial mountain biking season began with success for the local Narixa team with the youngest club member Gael Florkin taking fifth spot in the first race of the youth series. The twelve year old cyclist started well, leading the race initially before slowly losing places as the race progressed, just missing out on fourth in the final stages. The fifth place means he's well in the running for the following four races though with hopes running high at the club that he can improve on the performance and finish the series in one of the top spots.
Provincial council funding for Nerja - 8th Mar 2016
The town hall announced today that it expects to gain access to new funds from the provincial council this tax year as part of a €24.4 million pot for use by all 103 municipalities of province. The funding comes thanks to a plan dedicated to financially sustainable investment primarily focused on infrastructure projects such as new parks and public spaces, road and sewage upgrades as well as protection for historic buildings. The amount of money each municipality receives is decided according to registered population meaning that Nerja with a population of between 20 and 25 thousand residents can expect to receive some €350,000 extra.
