Equality march attracts the crowds - 7th Mar 2016

This years equality march which took place last Sunday registered over 450 participants according to Nerja councillor Patricia Gutiérrez Román. The event started in Plaza de España and attracted yet more people along the way from the various streets and alleyways until the circular route reached its starting point where participants could enjoy paella courtesy of Cafetería Hermes. The march which was organised by the "Women Always in Shape" association is part of a series of events celebrating equality which will continue until the 27th.

Sala Municipal exhibition - 3rd Mar 2016

Finish artist Marketta Mäkinen will be inaugurating a new exhibition of her work in the municipal exhibition hall tomorrow at 7pm. Marketta has studied art extensively in North America, completing a masters degree at the Cranbrook art academy in the USA. She centres her work around the environment with time, places and their history being important concepts in the varied pieces of art on display. Her exhibition will be open to the public until the 25th with both morning and evening viewings.

Consulate joins padrón push - 2nd Mar 2016

The British consulate in Málaga has added its voice to those of the numerous regional town halls in encouraging UK citizens and residents of other nationalities to register on the pádron of their local Ayuntamiento. Foreign residents are required to re-register every two years to confirm that they remain living in the area, thereby adding to the overall head count and funding of their local municipality. The Nerja council has warned that it could loose out on significant funds if foreign residents don't renew their details by the 31st of March. If you'd like to know if you should register you can check by sending an email to the foreigners department with your name and NIE to the following address extranjeros@nerja.es.

Good weekend for Nerja athletes - 1st Mar 2016

The Nerja athletics club once again enjoyed success over the weekend with medals and club records being broken in a variety of age groups. Pablo Oliva took part in the 50km speed walk as part of the Spanish National championship in Motril finishing fourth with a time of 4 hours and 31 seconds breaking the previous club record for the event by over 4 minutes. Juveniles were in competition in Antequera on Saturday and Sunday with 24 medals, 9 of which were golds, being awarded over two days of competition. Leaving the very youngest age categories to take part in competitions in Malaga and Carmona bringing in yet more medal place finishes with 14 being added to the weekends already impressive total.

Playazo height restrictions - 29th Feb 2016

New vehicle height restrictions were imposed today at the western entrance to El Playazo beach. Municipal engineers installed restrictive bars at just over two meters high to prevent vehicles heavier than the average car from accessing the track which runs the length of the beach all the way to the mouth of the river Chillar. The move is intended to prevent problems that such vehicles have caused in the past and keep the track open for cars during the summer months.

Municipal band gives Asturias concert - 26th Feb 2016

Nerja's municipal band visited Asturias this week to play a concert in the Príncipe Felipe de Oviedo auditorium. They attended as part of a wider event, the first of its kind in Oviedo, which counted on the participation of various bands local to the area including the principality musical union band and the Oviedo municipal music school. The Nerja group played a selection of music including 'Málaga, tierra ideal', 'Jubilee Fanfare' by Cesarini and 'Tío Alberola' by Ferrán.

Burriana approach clean-up - 24th Feb 2016

Following years of neglect the slopes along the main access road to the Burriana beach area of the town have been cleared by council workers exposing the gully below. The decision to clear the slopes was made by council officials due to the high number of visitors which travel the road to the beach during the summer months and the general scruffy appearance of the overgrown area. The move also meant that a number of new municipal jobs were created providing some out of season work for unemployed residents.

Paraglider rescued - 22nd Feb 2016

Local emergency services were called upon last night to search for a paraglider pilot who had been reported missing by a friend. The 56 year old Dutch pilot left Otivar heading out over the Alpujarras mountain range towards the coastal town of Almuñécar, however by early evening it was clear something had gone wrong with the individual being two hours overdue. By 7pm the emergency services had begun the search eventually finding the man in the Barranco de Colmenarejos area of the mountain range at 9:50pm. A military helicopter was necessary to airlift the man who was suffering with chest pains away from the accident site to Málaga airport where he was transferred to the Carlos Haya hospital for further medical attention.

Local man selected for Mont Blanc race - 18th Feb 2016

Nerja athlete Jorge Rodríguez Moreno has been selected this week to participate in this years gruelling Ultra Trail Mont Blanc race on the 26th of August, one of the most prestigious mountain races in the world. The race consists of a 170km journey around Mont Blanc and crosses over both the Swiss and Italian borders during the 46 hour event which is expected to include up to 86 nationalities amongst the 2500 participants. This is not the first such event the 35 year old Nerja runner has taken part in however it is to date his longest and toughest challenge during his six years in the ultra marathon sport.

APA organises Andalusian fiesta - 17th Feb 2016

Local animal rescue charity APA Nerja - estación esperanza announced today that it will be holding an Andalusian fiesta on the 27th February in Maro to help raise funds for its continuing work re-homing animals abandoned on the streets of the municipality. The event will last all day with particular focus on entertaining the kids with games and activities whilst the grown ups can enjoy typical Andalusian paella and tapas. There'll also be music of all types during the event with raffles and tombola's thrown in for good measure. If you'd like to check it out the fiesta will kick off at midday at the entrance to the village.

High winds bring damage - 16th Feb 2016

The high winds in recent days have brought with them inevitable damage with trees, signposts, cables and roof tiles being ripped free and falling to the ground bringing increased call outs for the local fire service. The gusty winds which have reached up to 90km/h are expected to continue until mid week when they'll likely be replaced by rain and possibly even snow in mountains areas with the temperatures also plunging. The unsettled weather is likely to continue until Saturday according to the national meteorological agency.

Sign up period for Dia del Pedal opens - 15th Feb 2016

This year Nerja will once again be hosting its annual cycle ride around the town with Dia del Pedal now reaching its 28th installment. Those interested in participating have until the 20th of this month to stop by the sports office in Calle Carlos Millón and sign up for the event which will take place on Andalucia day on the 28th of February. The route will begin and end in Plaza de España as in previous years with helmets being obligatory for the under 16s and encouraged for the older age groups too.
