La Sala exhibition opens - 1st Sep 2015

Nerja's latest art exhibition opens tomorrow with a collection of works by Evaristo Guerra going on display at the Sala Mercado. The local artist from Velez-Málaga first started exhibiting his sketches and paintings some fifty years ago and since then has continued to pursue and hone his talent with studies at the San Fernando school of Bellas Artes in Madrid. The exhibition will remain open to the public until the 15th of September with morning viewing hours of 11:30 to 2pm and afternoon hours of 6pm until 10pm.

Police apprehend drug dealer - 31st Aug 2015

Early on Friday morning local police officers detained a young man following a stop and search inspection on three youths who were acting suspiciously. Two of the individuals when questioned gave no resistance however the third grew increasingly uncooperative eventually leading to a chase through the streets. When caught and searched it became clear that the young man was selling a number of banned substances including marijuana, hachis and cocaine. He was arrested under suspicion of offences against public health, resisting arrest and aggression against police officers.

Burriana tourism office opens - 28th Aug 2015

One of Nerja's most popular tourist areas today saw the doors open on a new addition to the ever improving visitor facilities with a tourist office opening a stones throw from Burriana beach. The office, which is strategically placed near the new underground car park, is part of the initiative to bring tourist information to the busiest areas of the municipality. Opening hours are from 11am until 2:45pm Mondays to Thursdays whilst weekends will have extended opening with the office closing at 6:30pm.

August concert series comes to an end - 27th Aug 2015

This Saturday the final concert in a series of four organised as part of the Ventana Abierta festival will take place from 10pm with the "Wet and Wild Street Band" playing a mix of Bluegrass, Western Swing and Irish music amongst other styles at the Hotel Paraiso del Mar. Group members José Ruiz, Juan Baca, Mike Tweed and Luz Prado will take to the stage sporting a variety of instruments including banjos, fiddles, guitars and mandolins in a concert full of lively, fun music. Tickets are available form Calle Granada, 42 and cost €10.

Basketball tournament this Friday - 26th Aug 2015

Sports lovers might like to know that this Friday from 9:30pm the final of the 36th Juan Muñoz basketball tournament will be played in Nerja at the indoor sports hall behind the Enrique López Cuenca stadium. Local teams will fight it out for the top spot with both of last years finalists still in the running for this years title. Third spot will be decided in the match starting earlier at 8pm, so if you're in the mood for basketball on Friday night, why not go along.

La Vuelta passes through Malaga - 25th Aug 2015

One of the big three cycle races of the year, La Vuelta España, came to the province over the weekend with the final stage of four to be contested here leaving from Estepona this morning. The race has travelled all around the area, starting in Puerto Banus and visiting Marbella, Mijas and Málaga city as well as passing through the eastern towns of Vélez Málaga and Torre del Mar. Sadly on this occasion the race didn't visit Nerja as it has done in previous years but that didn't stop the local authorities lending a hand with members of the Civil Guard travelling to Rincón de la Victoria yesterday to assist with crowd control and making the way clear for the race to pass by. The 209km stage was finally won by Esteban Chaves from Colombia in a time of 8h 4 mins.

Saturday night concert in Plaza de los Cangrejos - 21st Aug 2015

Music lovers may enjoy a stroll to Plaza de los Cangrejos near Torrecilla beach on Saturday evening with the local group Calle Nueva Orquestra giving a free concert from 10pm. The group regularly appears in Nerja, performing jazz and swing music as well as Spanish classics at various events throughout the year.

Municipal cleaning services receive extra equipment - 20th Aug 2015

It's been announced that the municipal cleaning services are to receive new equipment as part of the 2015 budget agreed upon a few days ago. Councillor José García Beltrán explained that €365,000 has been set aside for a new rubbish collection lorry, a smaller truck equipped with a hot water, high pressure washer to clean the streets as well as new rubbish bins which will be placed throughout the municipality. He stressed that the budget for these improvements was fixed and that if the final price was less than expected, the town hall would favour purchasing more to further improve the service.

2015 Council budget set - 18th Aug 2015

Yesterday the 2015 budget for the municipality of Nerja was agreed upon in a council meeting held in the main council chamber in the town hall. The total came to a final figure of just over 24 million euros and is available for public scrutiny for the next 15 days in the main town hall building near the Balcón de Europa.

Illegal traffic signs removed - 17th Aug 2015

New councillor José Garcia Beltrán who has responsibility for traffic related issues in the town has ordered the removal of all signs forbidding the parking of caravans and motor homes throughout the municipality today due to concerns over their legality. He explained that owners of such vehicles now have the same rights as other road users meaning that they are free to leave their vehicles stationary in areas where parking is permitted, as long as they are not deemed to be camping. He went on to say that the bye-law approved by the previous administration was at times in direct violation of national law and was therefore illegal.

Fire in Calle Almirante Carranza - 14th Aug 2015

Summer always brings a high risk of fire to the municipality however today local police had to return to an already extinguished fire on a rural plot near Calle Almirante Carranza over fears that the scorched land may ignite once again. A fire was previously reported and put out on the 13th of August with the local fire service smothering the flames before the situation got out of hand although some 1000m of scrub land was burnt. The police officers were dispatched as a preventative measure with the episode serving to show the seriousness with which fire is regarded during the summer months. The local authorities ask that all residents and visitors maintain a watchful eye during the remainder of summer and behave in a responsibly in areas of particularly high risk.

Foreign residents advised to update driving licenses - 12th Aug 2015

Jorge Bravo, Nerja's councillor for foreign residents, has advised expatriates this week to update their driving licenses to the Spanish equivalent before new laws come into effect in 2016. He explained that this mainly effects foreign residents who hold a valid residency card or green residency certificate and recommended doing it now whilst plenty of time remains before the new year. As of 2016 traffic officers will receive new powers to fine foreign residents who have not updated their licenses with a maximum penalty of a €200 fine.
