Equality march on the streets of Nerja - 10th Mar 2015
Anybody on the road to Maro last Sunday morning may have been a little puzzled by how busy the road became, with over 800 people walking from Plaza España to the Nerja Caves as part of the town's annual equality march, which is now in its fifth year. Although the march was at a leisurely pace the participants were very glad of the refreshments available upon arriving at the caves which included free paella and cakes which proved to be very necessary indeed with a variety of dance workshops taking place after the various speeches and presentations. The 8th of March is a day used each year in Spain to draw attention to equality issues with many cities and towns throughout the country holding events of this nature to draw attention to continuing discrimination against women in society.
Cofradia presents annual poster - 9th Mar 2015
Nerja's Catholic brotherhoods have been making preparations over the past few weeks in readiness for Easter, which this year begins on the 29th of March. Last Saturday it was the turn of the brotherhood of 'Our Father Jesus Nazarene and Saint Mary of Sorrows' who released their customary Semana Santa poster in a small ceremony in the brotherhoods new official home in Calle Axarquia. The event was attended by the mayor as well as numerous other local officials for the unveiling of the poster which this year is the work of Nerja resident Juan Antonio Ortega Montesinos. Cultural centre hosts sacred music concert - 5th Mar 2015
Next week the Alminares choir, founded in Nerja in 1984, will be giving a concert in the Nerja Cultural Centre from 9pm on Friday night. The choir, directed by José Eugenio Vicente Téllez, with perform a program including music from Vivaldi, Rossini and Mozart amongst others. Tickets are available from the centres box office and cost €10.
British hiker rescued near Maro - 3rd Mar 2015
A 77 year old hiker was rescued yesterday by local emergency services after suffering a fall in the natural park near Maro. The individual, who was visiting Nerja for a few days, left El Nacimiento de Maro with a small group heading towards an area known as El Cortijo de Molinero. Members of the Guardia Civil, fire service and protection civil were all involved in the incident with the hiker eventually being taken to the health centre for checks on his ankle.
Dia del Pedal attracts plenty of interest - 2nd Mar 2015
There was once again a massive turn out for Dia del Pedal last Saturday with 2,150 people registering to take part in the event as well lots of onlookers who came out just to witness the spectacle. Dia del pedal is an annual activity which takes place on the afternoon of Dia de Andalucia, a bank holiday in the region, which sees the streets closed off for a mass cycle ride around a pre-decided route. The circuit starts and ends in Plaza de España in the centre of town with various prizes and trophies handed out in a number of categories. This years participation was close to reaching the events highest ever turn out which was in 2013 with 2,374 registered participants.
Bollywood comes to the coast - 26th Feb 2015
This week some of Nerja's most emblematic locations have once again been witness to a foreign film crew with scenes for two Bollywood films being shot in the town. The Balcón de Europa and Calahonda beach were both used by the crew who were shooting simultaneously for the films "Jill" and "Son of Sathyamurty". The strange mix of Andalusia and India aroused the interest of national news too with Spanish TV channel Antenna 3 and the COPE chain both taking an interest in the events, with Antenna 3 sending a news team to investigate further. Nerja is regularly used by both national and international productions providing greater exposure for Nerja to a worldwide audience and as a result local councillor Gema Garcia thanked the organisers for choosing Nerja as one of their locations.
Recycling continues to rise - 24th Feb 2015
Statistics for 2014 have shown that recycling in the town continues to improve with last years numbers showing a 14% increase on 2013 for plastic and metal containers such as bottles, tins and milk cartons. According to regional councillor Francisco Zurita Escobar the municipality of Nerja collected a total of 169,608 kilos of recyclable containers last year with a continuously improving culture amongst the young thanks to a series of campaigns underway in local schools. As well as improvements to existing rubbish and recycling containers the local council plans to provide more collection facilities throughout the town to increase still further the municipality's recycling rate.
Nerja mayor fights for rail connection - 23rd Feb 2015
Last week a motion presented by Nerja mayor, José Alberto Armijo, was approved to petition the Junta de Andalucía to include Nerja and Maro in the proposed coastal railway which is now back under review. The project was put on hold some six years ago however a study to be published in the coming weeks puts the subject back on the agenda. The motion also includes planned applications to the Spanish ministry for development and the European Commission's "investment plan".
Foreign students study Nerja tourism - 19th Feb 2015
A small group of students from the Tralee technology institute in Ireland are currently visiting Nerja as part of a study to see how the town stimulates year round tourism. The group met today with local councillors to learn first hand what strategies the town has adopted over the years to keep its tourism industry active during the cooler months. The study is part of a direct comparison between the Andalucian region and Kerry in southern Ireland with the students planning to visit more municipalities in the region.
Nerja enjoys a bumper carnival - 18th Feb 2015
According to Bernardo Pozuelo, councillor for development of tourism, Nerja enjoyed a highly successful carnival week with local hotels recording just under 90% occupancy during the period. He highlighted that one of the contributing reasons for this highly encouraging figure is the promotional work that the council does, most notably at FITUR, the international tourism fair in Madrid. The municipal tourism office reported that requests for information by telephone began weeks prior to the Nerja carnival actually beginning and that hotel rooms on the parade routes were by far the most sought after.
Concert in La Ermita - 17th Feb 2015
This coming Friday Elisa Urrestarazu, local saxophonist and music school professor, will give a concert of classical music in one of the towns most beautiful buildings, the recently restored, Ermita de las Angustias. The concert is to mark the first Friday of Lent and will include music from Bach, Paganini and Lecraire. Performances of this nature in the chapel are well worth attending and we'd encourage anybody interested to go along and experience great music in a magical setting. Entrance is free with the performance starting at 8pm.
Companies bid for fire station construction contract - 13th Feb 2015
It's been reported that a total of 43 companies have placed bids to construct the new fire station complex which will be located on the western edge of the town near the Frigiliana road. The project, which is finally getting underway after months of delays, will be jointly funded by the local and provincial councils with funds expected to be received from the Junta de Andalucia at a later date. The mayor expressed a great deal of satisfaction at the number of bids received, adding that the decision making process should be concluded by early March.
