Huge success for river cleaning excursion - 21st Sep 2015

The fifth Rio Chillar cleaning excursion organised for last weekend proved once again to be highly effective with a total of 800 kilos of rubbish collected along the banks by the 33 volunteers. In what is now becoming an annual event two groups hiked along the banks in order to clean up the river which is becoming ever more popular during the summer months. Amongst the volunteers were various local councillors as well the mayoress Rosa Arrabal Téllez in an excursion which was not for the feint hearted with the day starting at 8:30am and continuing until 6:30pm.

Exhibition by Rachid Hanbali opens - 18th Sep 2015

A new exhibition of paintings by the Moroccan born artist Rachid Hanbali opened today in the municipal hall in Calle Cristo. The collection entitled "Sunlight and Souks" will be open for viewing until October 8th both mornings and evenings and is primarily comprised of oil paintings of varying subjects. The artist, who has studied at the Art University of Granada and the Tetuán academy of fine art, describes his style as one of modern realism in which he always looks for the spontaneous and dynamic with poetry, emotion and feeling.

Further additions to assist cleaning services - 17th Sep 2015

Councillor José García Beltán announced today that the town council has reassigned approximately €10,000 of funds in order to purchase some 50 extra rubbish containers. The councillor remarked that the change in budgeting was required to keep pace with the needs of the municipality with current facilities falling short of satisfactory targets by more than 50%. The new funds come after an earlier announcement that €365,000 is budgeted for the municipal cleaning services in order to purchase new vehicles including a rubbish collection lorry and mobile pressure washer.

End of season for Nerja life guards - 16th Sep 2015

Yesterday evening marked the end of patrols by the municipality's life guard service on local beaches as announced by councillor José Maria Rivas Gálvez. He remarked on the lack of serious incidents this summer with the massive numbers of jelly fish causing the largest number of issues for the service to deal with. The councillor, who has overall responsibility for the maintenance and safety of the municipality's beaches , once again made clear his intention to expand the service for next summer hoping to lengthen its operational period as well as increase the number of personnel.

Life guards carry out end of season drills - 14th Sep 2015

It may be the end of the summer season here in Nerja however this week the life guard service has been carrying out drills on El Chucho and Torrecilla beaches in a move to fulfil all the requirements of the Q for Quality awards. The practice scenarios were carried out for visiting inspectors to evaluate and included the full range of local services with local police and medical staff at the health centre also taking part. Initial indicators regarding the overall performance were very positive leading to hopes that the municipality's beaches will retain last years awards.

Town hall acts to combat rural crime increase - 10th Sep 2015

This week the mayors of Frigiliana and Nerja held a meeting with the aim of producing a coordinated rural security plan to combat the series of thefts and robberies suffered by farmers in the two municipalities. Police and Guardia Civil representatives were also present to address a problem which currently amounts to the loss of 50 to 100 kilograms of produce each week. Officials highlighted that the robberies inflict a significant drain on the rural economy, not just in the loss of product but also in repairs to property, and will require the two councils to work together on the issue for the foreseeable future.

Askim Storband give free concert - 9th Sep 2015

This coming Monday 14th of September will see the Askim Storand orchestra give a free concert on the Balcón de Europa from 7pm. The Norwegian big band, who have just performed in the Smaalenene Jazz Festival will be performing two concerts on the Costa del Sol, one in the Nerja and the other in Mijas on the 16th. The orchestra will perform a variety of jazz and swing hits, with both international music and tunes from their native country.

End of summer river cleaning - 8th Sep 2015

With the end of the summer season comes Nerja's annual river cleaning expedition which this year will take place on the 20th of September. The excursion, whereby the banks of the Río Chillar and its tributaries are cleared of rubbish, is now in its fifth year and proving ever more necessary with the river becoming overwhelmingly popular with locals and tourists during the hottest days of the year. There are two routes to choose from with varying degrees of difficultly, however both will begin from Calle Mirto from 8:30am. Those interested in taking part can sign up in the main town hall building, tourist office, cultural centre or civil protection office.

Feria 2015 poster unveiled - 5th Sep 2015

Yesterday the official promotional poster for the 2015 Nerja Feria was unveiled in a small ceremony in the Sala Mercado municipal hall with local artist Lesly López Torres being named the winner of this years competition. Evaristo Guerra Pareja of Velez- Málaga came in second spot with Sacramento Ruiz de Castillo from Torre del Mar in third place amongst stiff competition with 41 individuals entering posters. If you'd like to see the winning design or any of the other entrants you can do so until the 20th of September both mornings and evenings in the municipal hall in Calle San Miguel.

Nerja closes in on 100% hotel occupancy - 4th Sep 2015

New figures released today show that Nerja reached impressive levels of hotel occupancy during the month of August with 96% of available accommodation occupied. The figures, provided by local councillor Patricia Román, indicated that the majority of visitors were Spanish nationals with large numbers of British, French, German, Italian and Swedish tourists also adding significantly to the numbers. The principal tourist office, located close to the Balcón de Europa, registered some 11,629 requests for information with the most popular local attraction being the Nerja Caves.

August activities bring in the crowds - 3rd Sep 2015

A town hall representative today announced that the cultural activities held in Plaza de los Cangrejos near Torrecilla beach attracted more than 6000 people during the month of August. The average number of audience members for each daily performance came to over 200, vindicating the earlier decision to move the activities from the Cultural Centre in Calle Granada. The large crowds frequently meant that not everybody could find a seat leading town hall officials to look for ways to further open up the square to accommodate more people for future editions.

Álora town hall chooses Nerja - 2nd Sep 2015

Last week Nerja was visited by a group of approximately 100 youths from the inland town of Álora, north west of Málaga. The group came as part of an annual program by the Álora town hall which aims to provide sporting and adventure activities for local young people during the summer months. The kids were divided into smaller groups with some hiking through the Rio Chillar whilst others went sea kayaking along the Maro coastline. The Álora councillor for youth and education explained that it was an opportunity to enjoy healthy and alternative activities whilst enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
