Local elections bring change for Nerja - 19th Jun 2015
Rosa Arrabal is the new mayoress of Nerja following the signing of an agreement between her PSOE (socialist) party, Ciudadanos, Izquierda Unida and Espacio Verde-Podemos. The deal which means that Nerja now has a coalition council, brings to an end 20 years of Partido Popular control of the town hall with José Alberto Armijo as mayor since 1995. The agreement came three weeks after the local elections, which saw no one party receive an absolute majority. The new mayoress, a 45 year old lawyer, remarked that "Nerja was celebrating democracy. Nerja asked for change and now we have managed to achieve it".
San Juan beach rules laid out - 16th Jun 2015
With the night of San Juan fast approaching the town hall has set out to remind visitors and locals of the rules for those choosing to camp on the beaches during the celebrations. Last year wood containing metal objects such as nails and staples were burnt on the beach bonfires allowed during the festival leaving dangerous objects behind. Local officials are eager to stress that campers are not allowed to use any firewood that may contain such objects and remind everybody of the rules that should be observed during the period.
Nerja's beach investment continues - 11th Jun 2015
A town hall representative announced today that the investment into Nerja's beaches, associated services and equipment is set to continue in the coming weeks with funds now allocated for further improvements. The committee which represents the municipalities of the Axarquia region has made €120,000 available to the town council for the installation of beach pathways, showers and other typical beach facilities. It means that some 425m of wooden beach walkways will be replaced throughout the municipality by more durable concrete substitutes such as those already installed on Burriana beach.
Volley ball teams continue to impress - 8th Jun 2015
Nerja's impressive run of volleyball achievements continued last weekend with teams from the municipality taking both second and third places in the AndalucÃa beach volleyball championship contested in Puerto de Santa MarÃa, Cadiz. As well as taking up two of the three spots on the podium a Nerja team member, Ana Muñoz Figueroa, was named best player of the tournament. Thanks to this result the second place team of Marina Armijo, Lara Herrero and Ana Muñoz will now qualify to take part in the national tournament which will take place at the end of the month in La Coruña.
New beach cleaning equipment - 3rd Jun 2015
In preparation for the coming summer season the town hall has announced the acquisition of new beach cleaning equipment which should maintain and even improve upon the already high standards that the municipality has reached in recent years. The new equipment consists of machinery which will work in conjunction with the tractor already available, helping clean but also level out the sand after the main work is completed. Eduardo Gómez, local official responsible for the machinery, received a special mention for making this latest addition to equipment possible and for his continuous hard work throughout the summer in keeping the coastline clean.
Nerja Athletics club reaches new heights - 1st Jun 2015
Last Saturday the Nerja athletics club excelled against regional competition at the Enrique López Cuenca stadium in an AndalucÃa wide tournament. On three separate occasions various age categories of the club were awarded gold medals making them champions of AndalucÃa in AlevÃn, Infantil and Cadete age groups. The medals didn't end there though with male and female teams in other age categories taking second and third place.
Road works near completion - 28th May 2015
The various infrastructure improvements which are currently underway in the town are proceeding well according to town councillor Nieves Atencia. Currently work is underway on resurfacing Calle Ãnimas and the intersection of Calle Frigiliana and Calle Huertos. The councillor explained that work is moving ahead on time and that the Calle Frigiliana project will be completed within a week with approximately one month needed to complete Calle Ãnimas. As well as the resurfacing work Calle Ãnimas will also be installed with special bollards, like those currently in use in Plaza Cavana, to close the street to vehicles.
Lifeguard service gets new equipment - 26th May 2015
This summer the Nerja lifeguard service will be better equipped than ever before to deal with emergencies on the beaches following the announcement that a new Jet ski is to be added to list of equipment for 2015. Councillor Nieves Atencia explained that the Jet ski was fully equipped with life vests, helmets and even a floating stretcher which can be used to bring injured people to shore and would be a useful addition to the Zodiac which is already in use. The announcement coincided with the closing of the inscription period for those wishing to work in the service.
Nerja Caves receives certificate of excellence - 22nd May 2015
The Nerja Caves Foundation has announced that for the second year running the caves have received the Tripadvisor certificate for excellence. The award is given to those attractions and establishments that consistently receive good reviews on the international tourism site throughout the year. The general manager expressed his pride at receiving the award and thanked all those that had visited and taken the trouble to leave reviews on Tripadvisor.com.
Even cookery programs choose Nerja - 20th May 2015
Visiting camera crews have become an increasingly common sight in Nerja over recent years but now it seems that even cookery programs are choosing the town to shoot in. Next month the producer of the Spanish version of Masterchef will begin filming a new cookery competition here in Nerja called "Cocineros al Volante". The programs contestants will travel around Spain in mobile kitchens, preparing food in some of the country's most beautiful locations and is planned to be aired during prime time viewing hours. The production team will consist of some 60 individuals with filming taking place in Plaza de España, the Balcón de Europa and Plaza de los Cangrejos.
Work begins on new Nerja museum - 18th May 2015
Local officials have begun the paperwork for the acquisition of land for Nerja's proposed new municipal museum, described by local councillors as "important for Nerja's culture heritage and tourism offering". The building in question is an old mill located in Calle Ãnimas just a short walk from many of Nerja's most popular tourist spots. The museum would be located in a historic building with two floors, an open air terrace and would be known officially as the municipal museum for art and popular traditions. The purchase is expected to cost in the region of €900,000.
Local farmers honoured by Mayor - 16th May 2015
In the closing ceremonies of this years San Isidro parade the mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, took the opportunity to highlight the work of the municipality's many farmers and agricultural workers as part of his speech to mark the returning of San Isidro to the shrine at the Nerja Caves. He remarked that farming still remains a vital pillar in the local economy despite the increase in tourism in recent decades and that the festival of San Isidro was the perfect opportunity for local officials and residents to reflect on the important role it continues to play. The speech coincided with a visit by the president of the regional council of Málaga, ElÃas Bendodo, the first time the president has taken part in Nerja's San Isidro celebrations.
