Nerja councillor introduces himself - 21st Jul 2015

The new councillor for foreign residents has introduced himself this week in an open letter to the various foreign communities in the municipality. In the letter Jorge Bravo invites the various groups and associations to meet with him to discuss proposals, ideas, complaints and requests on how to improve the town and the lives of all which reside within it. He explains that he hopes to have regular meetings arranged by September but is open to any communications now so if you'd like to contact him you can do so at jbravo@nerja.es in either Spanish or English.

50 years of the Parador in Nerja - 20th Jul 2015

Last Sunday the Nerja Parador celebrated its 50th anniversary with a ceremony in the grounds of the hotel overlooking Burriana beach. The guest list included some of the hotels most loyal clients, past employees and local officials including the new Mayoress Rosa Arrabal. The hotel first opened its doors in 1965 to cater for the increasing number of visitors to the Nerja Caves, helping turn Nerja into the tourist destination it is today and so has particular prominence in the towns history. The Nerja branch isn't the only one to be celebrating it's 50th anniversary this year with the Paradores in Guadalupe, Cazorla, León, Jávea, Santo Domingo de la Calzada and Jaén also holding events to mark the big five-0.

Persheng Warzandegan exhibits latest works - 17th Jul 2015

Next week the Iranian born painter, sculptor and potter Persheng Warzandegan will open an exhibition of her work in the Calle Cristo municipal hall here in Nerja. The opening ceremony will take place at 8pm on 21st with the collection remaining open to the public until the 8th of August. Those wishing to visit the exhibition of paintings ceramics and sculptures can do so from 11am until 2pm on weekdays.

Nerja celebrates the patron saint of mariners - 16th Jul 2015

Preparations are now in place for this evening's procession of the Virgen del Carmen through the streets of Nerja with official proceeding's beginning at 7pm at the entrance to the church of El Salvador near the Balcon de Europa. The procession is an annual event which you can read more about here and is well worth taking the trouble to see. The procession will take place on land and see so take a look at the route and pick a good spot!

Nerja's athletes continue to impress - 14th Jul 2015

Once again Nerja is representing Spain on the European stage this week with local speed walkers María Pérez and Pablo Oliva taking part in the European junior athletics championship which begins on the 16th. The duo flew to Eskilstuna in Sweden to join the 48 other athletes that make up the Spanish team, the second largest team Spain has ever sent. Both María and Pablo will compete over a distance of 10km with times of less than 45 minutes expected for both.

New councillor attacks previous beach policy - 10th Jul 2015

José María Rivas, the new councillor with responsibility for Nerja's beaches has spoken out this week concerning the state of the beaches in the municipality. After taking time to investigate he expressed his surprise at what he characterised as a considerable abandonment of the town's beaches by the previous administration and remarked that with appropriate planning existing problems could have been avoided, although he did not specify exactly what issues he had discovered. Work is therefore expected to be carried out on many of the town's beaches in the coming weeks for which the councillor apologises for in advance.

Music and dance festival comes to an end - 6th Jul 2015

This years Nerja Caves Music and Dance festival came to an end last Sunday with a performance by Pablo Alborán in what was described as a unique and intimate atmosphere. The Málaga singer gave a two hour performance in which he performed Flamenco and Tango styles as well as past hits and music from his new album. The new mayoress, Rosa Arrabal, was in attendance as well as officials from the Nerja caves foundation which organises the event.

Turmoil continues after elections - 3rd Jul 2015

The fallout from recent local elections has continued in Nerja this week with the Partido Popular being accused of boycotting a recent council meeting by the EVA (Espacio Verde-Podemos) political group. The confusion revolves around the acceptance of official notifications regarding the meeting with representatives of the PP, who were recently removed from office by a coalition of local parties, insisting that irregularities in the notification process caused the mix up.

Walker rescued over the weekend - 29th Jun 2015

Yesterday Nerja's emergency services were called into action in their first inland rescue of the summer. Initially the fire service and civil protection force were dispatched to aid a woman in the area of the river Chillar known as the 'Tercera fabrica de luz'. The woman was evacuated to the Chillar car park where she was assessed by staff from the health centre and later taken to the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía in Torre del Mar with a suspected fractured leg.

New exhibition opens in Calle Cristo - 25th Jun 2015

This Friday local artists Luis Santiago and Rodrigo Hernéndez will open a new exhibition of their creations in the Calle Cristo municipal hall. Their collection entitled "Unforgettable Souvenirs Inolvidables" is a satirical look at the world of politics and consumer culture laid out on both paper and canvas with a few other mediums thrown in for fun. If you'd like to take you a look you can do so both mornings and evenings.

Clean up for Nerja's Miradores - 23rd Jun 2015

In one of it's first acts the new Town Hall administration has announced a clean up of some of Nerja's lesser known Miradores. The vantage points of El Bendito and El Tajillo which overlook the beaches of Carabeillo and El Salón respectively, will receive a tidy up improving safety rails, the surrounding vegetation and removing graffiti. The spokesperson for the council José María Rivas remarked that these pretty corners of the town have been overlooked for years and are in dire need of attention.

Nerja represented at European games - 22nd Jun 2015

Any local beach volleyball fans would surely have been glued to the TV last week as local girl Angela Lobato stepped out to represent Spain at the European games held in Bakú, Azerbaijan. Lobato, along with her team mate Paula Soria started well in the competition not losing a single set in their first two matches. They later progressed to the quarter finals of the competition where they were beaten 2-0 by the Swiss team eventually coming fifth in the overall rankings.
