Nerja's polideportivo gets face lift - 17th Apr 2015
Nerja and Maro's five aside football pitches are to be resurfaced next week at a cost of approximately €90,000 according to Gema Garcia, councillor with responsibility for sport. The pitches are used a great deal throughout the year for football as well as various other sports such as basketball and roller hockey and are a popular place for young people to get together in general. The councillor highlighted that in Maro the local school would benefit from the improvements and remarked that the work showed the ongoing commitment to sport of the towns current administration
Nerja taxis get meters installed - 16th Apr 2015
Nerja's local taxi drivers have finally been forced to adopt meters thanks to new regional laws which are coming into affect throughout AndalusÃa. Up until now taxi drivers had relied upon fixed prices for common journeys however the introduction of the new meters has caused a small decrease in fares in free flowing traffic. There was resistance to the introduction of meters primarily due to the installation cost which comes to approximately €1000 with drivers also arguing that during the summer months when the number of cars and visitors increase, the extra congestion would lead to average fares going up.
Swedish tour operators visit Nerja - 15th Apr 2015
Today a large of group of visiting Swedish tour agents were officially welcomed to Nerja in a ceremony at the town hall. Numerous local officials attended as well as local business people and individuals from the Swedish community already resident in the town. José Miguel GarcÃa, Nerja's deputy mayor, remarked on the importance of visits such as these which help open up Nerja to new markets by providing first hand experience to those actually speaking to clients. Figures collected by the municipal tourist office already show an increase in Swedish visitor numbers however local officials still believe that there is much more that can be done to promote Nerja and the wider region to Scandinavian holiday makers.
Nerja athletes shine in Mijas - 15th Apr 2015
Last weekend local athletes Alvaro Fernandez and Francisco Urbano left the field standing in the inaugural Mijas fun run coming first and second respectively. The run which was over a distance of 10km started at 11am on the outskirts of Fuengirola and was completed by Fernandez in a time of 32 minutes 41 seconds with Urbano just under a minute behind. The victory was particularly sweet for Fernandez as it came after a long break from competing at the regional level.
New art exhibition in La Sala Mercado - 13th Apr 2015
A new collection of paintings and sculptures by José Manuel Velasco is currently being exhibited in the municipal hall in Calle San Miguel and will be open to the public until the 28th of April both mornings and evenings. Since studying art at Granada University, José has taken a long journey to find his current abstract style, exhibiting in Milan, Paris and New York along the way as well as forming part of the Kaos group in Madrid. In his latest works he has concentrated on the growing problem of climate change in a collection entitled "Ruptura y Cambio".
Tutti Frutti spring party - 10th Apr 2015
Councillor Sandra Jimena has announced that in collaboration with local bars the spring party organised by the youth department of the town hall will take place on the 18th of April from 1pm in plaza Tutti Frutti. The event will begin with live music from various local groups, a performance from the Elena dance school and sessions from DJ's Koty Jiménez and Xarly Brown into the evening.
Plaza de los Cangrejos gives new home to fountain - 9th Apr 2015
Work has now begun to relocate the Fuente de Europa fountain from its current location in the Parque Verano Azul to a new, more prominent position in the Plaza de los Cangrejos near Torrecilla beach. The decision was taken to move the monument, which was built in 2002 to celebrate the creation of the European Union, following the construction of the new football pitch in the park which left the fountain out of view and rather neglected. As well as being relocated the monument, which is made of stone from each country of the union, will be floodlight during the evenings.
Tourism statistics continue to encourage - 7th Apr 2015
The municipal tourism office today published their hotel occupancy figures for the Easter period, as collected by local establishments in the municipality. The figures were highly encouraging with a total occupancy of almost 90%over the Easter week, rising to 96%from Maunday Thursday to Easter Sunday. These figures were well above the average for the Costa del Sol, as commented on by Ãngela DÃaz, spokesperson for Nerja's local business association, with the average occupancy being approximately 81%. Bernardo Pozuelo, local councillor for tourism, remarked that the figures show that Nerja continues to consolidate its position as a top tourist destination for the period and that the tourism sectors economic recovery continues.
Athletes visit over Easter period - 6th Apr 2015
Once again the Easter period has brought with it not only tourists looking for a short break but also a large group of athletes, both national and international, looking to train in the towns sports facilities. As part of a six year long campaign which aims to promote Nerja amongst the European sporting community some 485 individuals are currently using the municipality's numerous sports installations, primarily those located at the Enrique López Cuenca stadium. Amongst the groups are Swedish, Norwegian, German and English athletes as well as an Olympic gold medallist.
New footbridges approved for Chillar and Seco - 1st Apr 2015
Nerja is to get two new footbridges as part of a regional initiative which will create a continuous coastal walkway stretching 180km from Nerja to Manilva. The two bridges, which will provide a more direct route than is currently available to cross the rivers Chillar and Seco, will have a combined cost of approximately €220,000. Seventy five percent of the Senda Litoral project is already completed and the construction period for the two prefabricated timber bridges is expected to be short meaning they should be in place before the summer season.
Lifeguard service over Easter period - 31st Mar 2015
With good weather expected for the Semana Santa period a town hall representative has announced today that there will be a special lifeguard service in place from Saturday 28th of March until Monday 6th of April. The service, which will count on support from the local police and civil protection service, will be primarily focused on the most popular beaches of Burriana and La Torrecilla and will begin each day at noon.
Construction begins on new fire station - 27th Mar 2015
The first bricks will be laid on Nerja's new fire station this month in a ceremony to take place on the 30th which will be attended by local officials as well as ElÃas Bendodo, president of the Málaga provincial council. The much delayed project has a budget of approximately €1.16 million and will be constructed by SANDO who was the winning bidder for the contract amongst stiff competition from 42 other companies. Initial agreements between the town hall, provincial council and Junta de Andalucia broke down some months ago leaving a large hole in the funding for the development however the town hall and regional council together found funds to carry out the project despite political tensions with the Junta.
