Mini Easter processions this Saturday - 25th Mar 2015
In a new initiative spearheaded by councillor Gema Garcia this Saturday a new spectacle will be seen on the streets of Nerja with 14 mini Semana Santa tronos making their way through the streets of the town centre. The Easter displays have been put together by various youth organisations in Nerja as well as a number of the local Catholic brotherhoods and resident groups. The procession will leave Plaza de España at 5pm on Saturday afternoon accompanied by the municipal band.
Ministerial assurances over new water treatment plant - 24th Mar 2015
Spanish minister for the environment Isabel GarcÃa Tejerina visited Nerja today to take a tour of the new water treatment plant now under construction on the eastern side of the town. She was met by Nerja mayor, José Alberto Armijo, and made assurances that the works continue to be on target for completion by the end of the year with a six month testing period set to begin in January 2016. During her visit she highlighted the commitment that the present Spanish government has made to Nerja, taking the decisions on both this project as well as the new €800,000 investment in El Playazo beach which aims to combat the effects of climate change in the area.
New exhibition of paintings by Manuel Paloma - 20th Mar 2015
A collection of 36 works by local artist Manuel Paloma is now open to the public in the municipal hall in Calle Cristo to mark the first anniversary of the artists death. The selection on display was chosen by the Manuel's widow, Rosario, and will be open to visitors until the 31st of March from 11am until 1:30pm in the mornings and from 6:30pm until 8:30pm in the afternoons. The exhibition includes sketches and oil paintings influenced by some of Manuel's favourite artists including Caravaggio, Botticelli and Tiziano.
New proposal to open more caves to the public - 20th Mar 2015
The mayor, in his capacity as vice president of the Nerja Caves Foundation, will officially propose in the coming days to open up new sections of the caves at Maro to the public. The sections in question, La Torca and La Mina, are considered to be the heart of the network of caves and would be available to visit by the public in small groups. This would be the first time that these particular areas of the caverns have been opened up since the opening of the caves themselves as a tourist attraction in 1960 and would allow visitors to see the early archaeological excavations, areas where medieval artefacts were discovered and some of the many cave paintings.
Nerja ranks high in Repsol guide - 18th Mar 2015
This years Repsol travel guide, which is compiled using the comments and opinions of the travelling public, has put Nejra in the top 10 villages in Spain to visit. Amongst the opinions offered by travellers through the guides social media networks, the Nerja Caves, Balcón de Europa and local beaches were all highlighted helping the town reach number five on the list. There were mentions for towns all over Spain including locations in Asturias, Zaragoza and Mallorca but the medieval village of AlbarracÃn took the top spot.
Planning begins for San Isidro 2015 - 17th Mar 2015
Preparations for this years San Isidro romeria are already underway with councillor Sandra Jimena announcing this week that the application period for those wishing to bring carts and carriages is now open. As well as this, the period for local businesses to apply to run open air bars at the caves or run kebab, hamburger or ice cream stalls is also open. The final date for applications to be received and considered is April 10th so those wishing to be involved need to get a move on.
New fire station contract awarded - 16th Mar 2015
The mayor of Nerja, José Antonio Armijo, today announced that in the next local council meeting the construction company Sando will be officially named as the winning bider for the contract to build the new fire station which will serve Nerja as well as other neighbouring municipalities. A total of 43 companies sought to be considered for the project, with 5 being excluded early on for various motives leaving 38 who were in the running for the contract. Work is expected to begin by the end of this month with the overall investment in the new facility reaching €1.1 million.
New investment in coastal walkways - 13th Mar 2015
ElÃas Bendodo, president of the regional council of Malaga has announced today new investment for one of Nerja's coastal walkways, Paseo de los Carbineros, which has been closed due to safety concerns for a number of years. He explained that €437,000 will be made available to allow at least a partial reopening of this 100m coastal route as well as the addition of a new stretch linking El Salón and Caletilla beaches. These works are part of a coastal wide initiative to link Manilva with Nerja via a continuous pedestrian pathway, 75% of which is already complete and in use.
Application period opens for municipal halls - 11th Mar 2015
Councillor Gema Garcia is reminding any parties interested in using either the municipal hall in Calle Cristo or the Sala Mercado hall in Plaza de la Ermita that they have until the 31st of this month to make their application. This application period is for the use of either hall during the second half of the year from July to December. Anybody interested in doing so should ask for the necessary forms in the cultural centre, culture department of the town hall or residents office.
Equality march on the streets of Nerja - 10th Mar 2015
Anybody on the road to Maro last Sunday morning may have been a little puzzled by how busy the road became, with over 800 people walking from Plaza España to the Nerja Caves as part of the town's annual equality march, which is now in its fifth year. Although the march was at a leisurely pace the participants were very glad of the refreshments available upon arriving at the caves which included free paella and cakes which proved to be very necessary indeed with a variety of dance workshops taking place after the various speeches and presentations. The 8th of March is a day used each year in Spain to draw attention to equality issues with many cities and towns throughout the country holding events of this nature to draw attention to continuing discrimination against women in society.
Cofradia presents annual poster - 9th Mar 2015
Nerja's Catholic brotherhoods have been making preparations over the past few weeks in readiness for Easter, which this year begins on the 29th of March. Last Saturday it was the turn of the brotherhood of 'Our Father Jesus Nazarene and Saint Mary of Sorrows' who released their customary Semana Santa poster in a small ceremony in the brotherhoods new official home in Calle Axarquia. The event was attended by the mayor as well as numerous other local officials for the unveiling of the poster which this year is the work of Nerja resident Juan Antonio Ortega Montesinos. Cultural centre hosts sacred music concert - 5th Mar 2015
Next week the Alminares choir, founded in Nerja in 1984, will be giving a concert in the Nerja Cultural Centre from 9pm on Friday night. The choir, directed by José Eugenio Vicente Téllez, with perform a program including music from Vivaldi, Rossini and Mozart amongst others. Tickets are available from the centres box office and cost €10.
