Outdoor music for Nerja hotels? - 5th Feb 2015
With Christmas behind us and the Nerja Carnival soon to be hitting the streets local councillors are turning their attention to this years tourist season and specifically the effects of Andalucia wide laws on local businesses. Last year venues which provided outdoor music were told that they could no longer do so due to laws that specifically prohibit such activities. Councillor Nieves Atencia remarked that although these laws may make perfect sense in inland areas of Andalucia for coastal towns such as Nerja, Malaga, Fuengirola and Marbella such laws would cause considerable damage to local businesses, specifically to the many hotels along the coast which employ large numbers of local residents. The council is set to petition the Junta de Andalucia to allow such activities from 8pm until midnight.
New Burriana parking facility soon to open - 3rd Feb 2015
Today the mayor of Nerja along with various local officials and technicians toured the new car park in the Burriana area of the town which is presently in the final stages of construction. The new facility, which will provide space for 240 vehicles raising the overall spaces provided by municipal car parks to 1,400, continues to be on target for opening by the end of March / early April, potentially in time for Easter. The next step for the project is to provide an official name for the car park which is currently referred to as NC-63 but will soon officially be known as the Burriana Municipal Car Park.
Padel tournament proves to be a growing success - 2nd Feb 2015
Last weekend Nerja was once again the venue for a sporting competition with the towns 3rd annual Padel tournament taking place in the indoor sports centre behind the Enrique Lopez Cuenca athletics stadium. The competition, which was organised by the towns municipal football school, was well supported with 80 teams of two taking part in five categories. Not only did the top teams receive trophies but also cash prizes with the winners taking home €200.
New funds for Nerja's beaches - 30th Jan 2015
Thanks to an agreement between the Malaga provincial council and the community of Axarquia municipalities, Nerja is set to receive new funds to improve its beach facilities in preparation for the summer months. The deal means that €620,000 will be shared between the various municipalities which form part of the Axarquia, with Nerja receiving €120,143. The new funds are destined to be spent on providing/improving handrails, showers and amphibious chairs.
Music festival program unveiled - 29th Jan 2015
The program for the 56th Nerja Caves international music and dance festival was presented today by Nerja Caves foundation president Jorge Hernández Mollar at the FITUR tourism fair in Madrid. This years program includes four performances in the caves themselves with another four in Plaza de España in the centre of Nerja. Amongst the line up is the Malaga symphonic orchestra, who'll open the festival on the 2nd of July, Eva Yerbabuena with a Flamenco performance and ballet from Carmen Roche. Tickets for performances in caves will cost around €40 while those in Plaza de España will be free.
Almijara bowls club opens new pitches - 27th Jan 2015
Today the Almijara bowls club officially opened six new pitches in the La Raqueta sports complex in Nerja in a small ceremony attended by local officials Gema Garcia and Bernard Pozuelo. The club, which has some seventy members, is now capable of holding international tournaments, albeit on a small scale, with clubs from the UK already being invited. The president of the club, David Trippas, thanked both councillors for attending whilst highlighting the continuing support provided by the town hall in the provision of facilities.
Road works in Calle Diputacion - 26th Jan 2015
Nerja's councillor for infrastructure has announced today that work will begin this week on Calle Diputacion to prepare its existing drainage channels for use with the towns new waste water treatment plant which is currently under construction. The street which is already closed, will remain so for at least three months while the work is carried out. The councillor explained that the works necessary in this street would not be replicated all over Nerja given that many areas have long since been prepared and that the changes being implemented were simple enough to make any delays unlikely.
Christmas prizes handed out - 23rd Jan 2015
Local business owners who took part in Nerja's annual Christmas decorations competition came together today for a small ceremony in the town hall to hand out the prizes for the 2014/ 15 competition. The overall winner was the Hotel Balcon de Europa, with Electro Carmari in second and La Marroquineria Olmos in third. Each received a cash prize while Optica Chaves who came fourth received a certificate. This is the third time that Nerja has held such a contest with the only prerequisite being that those shops, hotels and bars wishing to take part be a member of the Nerja Centro trading association. Councillor Nieves Atencia took the opportunity to thank all the businesses involved and hoped that they would all enter again next year.
Reed Ensemble performs this weekend in Nerja - 22nd Jan 2015
This Friday evening the woodwind quintet "Notos Reed Ensemble" will be giving a concert from 9pm at the Nerja cultural centre in Calle Granada. The group, which consists of an oboe, clarinet, two saxophones and a bassoon aim to show the different styles of music their instruments can produce and will play music by Vivaldi, Haendel, Gershwin and Bernal. Entrance costs €10.
Fire fighter complex another step closer - 21st Jan 2015
After many months of uncertainty it appears as though Nerja's new fire station will finally get the go ahead despite previous funding agreements being broken. The local council have now officially approved the project, thanks to new financial arrangements between the provincial council of Malaga and the Nerja town hall, and will open the project to contractors to bid on. The overall cost is expected to be no more than €1,235,000 with the local authority contributing 43% of the money for a much improved facility that will serve a wide area as part of an Axarquia regional strategy. The bidding process is expected to be underway by next week.
New street works in Calle Iglesia - 19th Jan 2015
The small street which runs along the southern wall of El Salvador church is to get a facelift this coming month with plans to lay new paving as well as making improvements to basic infrastructure such as water and electricity supplies. The new surface promises to be more artistic than you'd expect though with a mosaic pattern planned which will be created by local firm, Empedrados Los Picantes S.L, which has many years of experience in such decorative works. Their past projects include work at the Santuario de Nazaret, Museo Romántico de Madrid and Alhambra de Granada.
Police continue the fight against illegal camping - 16th Jan 2015
Today local police took action against an illegal camp in the municipality as part of a continuing campaign which began in earnest last summer. The camp, which was set up on the hills overlooking Maro beach, was made up of three vehicles with the majority of the campers of Italian nationality. According to Nerja councillor José Miguel GarcÃa all campers eventually agreed to leave although in some cases the threat of further action was necessary.
