Jazz comes to Nerja this weekend - 15th Jan 2015

On Saturday evening one of Malaga's most well known jazz bands will visit Nerja to perform in the cultural centre as part of a local tour to promote their latest album. Their performance, which begins at 9pm, will include a selection of music from the 20's right up to the present day including hits from Benny Goodman, Count Basie and Linda Eder. Tickets cost €12 and are available from the centre's ticket office.

Noche en Blanco 2015 announced - 14th Jan 2015

Gema Garcia, Nerja councillor for education and culture, today announced the dates for White Night 2015, which will be the 4th time that the town has held such an event. In a change to past Noche en Blanco cultural evenings, this years edition will be held over two days, beginning on Saturday the 9th of May and continuing until Sunday night. She explained that the extension is due to the success of past events and the sheer number of local performers who wish to take part. New poster exhibition opens - 13th Jan 2015

With this years Carnival rapidly approaching a new exhibition has opened in the Calle Cristo municipal hall of entrants for the annual competition to choose a poster to represent the event. The twelve entries will be on display until the 30th of January from 10am until 2pm and from 5:30pm until 9pm each working day with the winning poster to be announced on the 15th. The artists had very few limitations placed on them by the competition organisers, resulting in a great variety of ideas and techniques on display in the collection. The competition was open to anybody wishing to take part with the winning poster earning its creator €300 in prize money.

Maro prepares for San Anton - 12th Jan 2015

This weekend the first of the year's feria's will be begin in the municipality with Maro holding celebrations in honour of San Anton, patron saint and protector of animals. The events will begin on Friday afternoon from 6pm with Maro's Church of wonders, located in the village square, opening its doors for local people to bring floral offerings to the saint. From then on Maro will play host to a variety of events including a gathering of classic cars and motor vehicles on Saturday from 1pm, a chance to try the local dish of Choto a la Mareña in the village bars and a procession of the saint through the streets from 8:30pm on Saturday evening. The feria will end in the early hours of Sunday morning with a fireworks display.

Work begins on Torrecilla lighting - 9th Jan 2015

Councillor with responsibility for the municipality's beaches, Nieves Atencia, today announced that work to improve the lighting along one of Nerja's most popular beaches, La Torrecilla, had begun. The improvements which form part of a province wide energy efficiency drive will be paid for by funding from the regional council and will stretch from Plaza de los Cangrejos all the way to El Chucho beach. At a cost of €40,000 the new lighting isn't cheap, however the more modern LED bulbs use approximately half the energy of the old street lights whilst providing greater levels light.

Festive hotel occupancy - 8th Jan 2015

Nerja once again outperformed the regional average in terms of hotel occupancy over the festive period with over 75% of hotel rooms being occupied from the period beginning on the 24th of December until the 6th of January. This figure was far higher than that of the province of Malaga which only registered 57% over the same period according to figures from the regional tourist office. The majority of the visitors continue to be British followed by the Spanish, Germans and Swedes.

Nerja Carnival preparations begin - 7th Jan 2015

With Christmas now at an end eyes are turning to the next big event in the Nerja calendar, the Nerja Carnival, which this year will be held from the 12th of February until the 15th. The inscription period for hopeful carnival kings and queens is now open with cash prizes being awarded for best costumes in the various categories. This years top prize is €1600 for the best female costume with prizes also being awarded to juniors as well.

Cultural centre saxophone concert - 5th Jan 2015

Saxophone lovers are in for a treat this Saturday with the saxophone quartet "Ensemble Sinoidal" taking to the stage at the Nerja Cultural Centre from 9pm. The group, who have been together for two years, will be performing a broad selection of music from the last century right up to today in what they describe as a uniquely modern style. If you think you'd like to go along tickets cost €10 and are available from the centre's box office.

Local swimmer sets new regional record - 30th Dec 2014

At a recent Andalucian swimming federation meet in Cadiz local swimmer Lourdes Mª Herrero Centurión set a new regional record for her category in the 50m freestyle against some of the best young swimmers in Andalucia. Her time of 29,73 is the latest in a series of achievements which continue to highlight her as one of the best young hopefuls of the region. Lourdes, who has been competing since the age of five, will be swimming competitively again in January at the regional championship in Malaga of the 16th, 17th and 18th.

Police receive new vehicles - 26th Dec 2014

Today the town hall announced that the local police are to receive two new vehicles next week at a cost of €43,000. The two Renault Megane's will join the existing fleet of police vehicles as part of an ongoing program of improvement, offering a better service to local residents as well as fulfilling a manifesto promise of the ruling Grupo Popular party. The vehicles, which conform to all necessary Junta de Andalucia standards for such usage, will be available to officers from Monday.

Municipal band celebrates its 25th anniversary - 22nd Dec 2014

Last Saturday the Nerja Municipal band celebrated the anniversary of its foundation with a special commemorative concert in the cultural centre in Calle Granada. Over the past twenty five years the band has provided a valuable stepping stone for local youth who wish to pursue a career in music with over 500 pupils taking part since its creation. The event was extremely well supported with the venue unable to seat all those that wished to see the concert leading to a repetition of the event that will take place on the Balcon de Europa on the 28th of December from 1pm.

Christmas exhibition proves popular - 20th Dec 2014

The organisers of the exhibition of three king's costumes, which is currently open to the public in the Calle Cristo municipal hall, announced today that so far over 2000 people have visited the exhibition which largely marks the work of one individual, Encarnita Kronox who'll be packing away her needle and thread for good once the exhibition is over. If you'd like to go along and see the collection of costumes, including both those of the kings, pages and royal postmen you can do so up until the 5th of January.
