Exhibition of young artists work opens - 19th Aug 2016
A new exhibition of work by young Málaga artists has opened this week in the Sala Mercado. The collection which is part of a wider project to support local artists from the ages of 16 to 35 will be on display until the 28th of the month and will include works from various categories including graphic art, scenic art, visual arts, music and film amongst others. Works from this years intake, which is now in its third edition, will go on to be judged by important cultural and artistic figures from Málaga with those showing special merit going on to attend a gala night on the 30th September.
Weekend volleyball tournament postponed - 17th Aug 2016
The sports department of the town hall has announced that the Nerja 2016 mixed volleyball tournament planned for the weekend of the 27th and 28th has now been moved to the following weekend. Due to this the start time for the tournament has also changed and is now set to begin at 5pm to take advantage of the floodlights available on the pitches.
Regional campaign to promote recycling comes to Nerja - 16th Aug 2016
Ecoembes a non-profit organisation in conjunction with the Málaga regional government has today begun a new recycling initiative called "Reciclaplus" to encourage the populations of the various municipalities to recycle more and smarter. The initiative is based around a mobile learning centre which aims to educate residents in the recycling process and teach local children of the importance of recycling, getting them into good habits from an early age. The exhibition which was today visiting Ronda will soon come to Nerja and challenge the municipality to recycle 10% of its plastics over a 3 month period. Those municipalities that meet the challenge will receive funds for local charities and social initiatives.
Lifeguards recommend issuing fines - 12th Aug 2016
Lifeguard services in various municipalities have taken a tougher stance against swimmers this summer recommending to local councils the idea of imposing fines upon beach goers who ignore instructions. The suggested fines which range from €300 to €3000 are currently under consideration in a number of coastal towns including Torrox, Torremolinos and Benalmádena with Vélez-Málaga already preparing new bye-laws. The authorities here in Nerja have announced no such plans so far however with recent rescues required due to swimmers ignoring clear red flag warnings it remains a possibility.
Fiesta Blanca this Saturday - 11th Aug 2016
The annual summer white party will be taking place on El Salón beach this Saturday from 8pm and will feature the usual mix of live music, DJ's, competitions and drinks organised by the youth department of the town hall. Everybody is welcome to this increasingly popular event which every year attracts thousands of residents, neighbours and tourists. Just wear white and dance the night away!!!
Maxima FM comes to Nerja - 9th Aug 2016
National radio station Maxima FM will be coming to Nerja on the 20th August as part of their 2016 open air tour. The event, which will be free to enter, will include some of the stations top DJ's playing disco, techno and house music from 8pm well into the early hours of the morning in Plaza de los Cangrejos just a stones throw from La Torrecilla beach.
Drug smugglers detained - 5th Aug 2016
In a joint operation involving the Guardia Civil and National Police a drug smuggling gang operating on the coast has been uncovered with 11 arrests, including at least one Nerja resident. An investigation began in December of last year due to the suspicious activities of an individual living in Nerja and rapidly grew leading to the discovery of an international organisation principally concerned with the trafficking of hachís. The group imported the drugs from Morocco and transported them to other European countries including France, Italy and Holland via the province of Málaga. As part of a series of raids the authorities seized approximately €800,000 worth of the groups assets believed to be the proceeds of crime.
20th annual open water swim race - 4th Aug 2016
If you're on Burriana beach this Sunday you'll likely see the spectacle of hundreds of swimmers gathering for Nerja's 20th open water swimming event starting just before 11am. The event will be split up into various categories with distances for the youngsters and veterans alike ranging from 550m all the way up to an exhausting 1,200m. New photo exhibition opens in Nerja Museum - 2nd Aug 2016
This Thursday a new photographic exhibition will open in the Nerja Museum exhibition hall of subterranean images taken in the region over the last 20 years. The collection which is entitled "Subterranean Andalucia brought to light" includes 120 images from a wider collection of 4,000 taken in over 60 caves in the region. The photographer Paco Hoyos commented that his images brought this unique natural environment which few people get to see to the wider public. The exhibition will remain open until the 2nd October.
Fire engine overturns on emergency call - 1st Aug 2016
Last Friday three of Nerja's firemen were injured when the fire engine they were travelling in overturned on a roundabout between Nerja and Maro. The firemen were heading towards the motorway responding to an emergency call when the incident happened which lead to all three of the vehicles occupants being taken to the Axarquia regional hospital in Velez-Málaga. The fire service later confirmed that there were no serious injuries to anybody in the group with only cuts, bruises and contusions requiring treatment.
Delta Aquarid meteor shower intensifies - 29th Jul 2016
Over the next couple of days the meteor shower of fragments from the 96P Machholz comet is set to intensify. The shower which began on the 12th July will continue until the end of August however the next few days will provide the greatest spectacle with some 15 to 20 fragments expected to burn up in the atmosphere each hour. If you're interested in seeing the cosmic light show the optimum time will be on Saturday morning at 2am.
Utility revision scams on the increase - 27th Jul 2016
Residents of the municipality are being alerted to an increase in the number of false utility inspections being reported recently. The scam involves one or more individuals, typically dressed as employees of either the water, electricity or gas company arriving unexpectedly to make an inspection of your utility installation for safety purposes. Frequently these inspections are totally unnecessary and have nothing to do with the company that supplies you. The authorities are advising elderly residents in particular that should they receive an unexpected visit to first ask for identification which should be authorised by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism (Ministerio de Industria, Energía y Turismo) and to contact their supplier to check the validity of the inspection.
