Mayoress visits new fire station - 12th Feb 2016

The municipality's new fire station complex was visited today by Nerja mayoress Rosa Arrabal Téllez accompanied by various provincial officials including the president of the provincial firefighters committee. The visit was to check on the progress of the project which is scheduled to reach completion and be ready for use by spring next year at a cost of approximately 1.2 million euros. The new 3,600 m2 complex will include two buildings, one to be used as a garage and equipment store and another for use by staff including offices, training facilities, dressing rooms and a gym. The project which is partly funded by the local council and partly by the provincial authorities will greatly improve the facilities available for local fire crews which not only have responsibility for the town but also in controlling wild fires during the summer months in the nearby natural parks.

Juan Truco opens latest exhibition in Nerja - 11th Feb 2016

This Friday the Sala Mercado will open it's doors with an exhibition of the latest works by artist Juan Truco. The collection seeks to immerse visitors in a world of fantasy and diversity via images comprised of bold colours as well as sculpture which Juan describes as 'another of my creative facets'. If you'd like to visit the exhibition you can do so from 11am until 2pm and from 5:30pm until 8pm every weekday until march 1st.

Cuenca brothers give classical concert - 8th Feb 2016

This week the world renowned Hermanos Cuenca will give a concert in Nerja's cultural centre at 9pm on Friday night. The brothers, José Manuel and Francisco who play piano and guitar respectively, describe their style as 'atypical within the classical world' and are well travelled giving concerts in countries all over the world including Japan, the UK, USA and Switzerland to name just a few. If you'd like to see their performance you can obtain tickets from the centres ticket office this week.

Caterpillar season arrives early - 6th Feb 2016

Thanks to the unseasonably high temperatures experienced so far this year the authorities are warning of larger than normal numbers of processional caterpillars which are commonly found in the region. The insects which live in and around pine trees can pose varied health risks to those that come into contact with them ranging from skin irritation all the way up to anaphylactic shock in the worst cases. The town council are urging residents of the municipality to be vigilant, keep a reasonable distance from pine trees where possible and to remain alert to any possible symptoms particularly in children and pets.

Fiber optic broadband comes to Nerja - 2nd Feb 2016

Following a number of meetings with telephone company representatives, Jorge Bravo, councillor with responsibility for new technologies, announced today that fibre optic broadband is coming to Nerja. Work is already underway in the El Chaparil area of the municipality with the town centre coming in a second phase of installation and the northern areas and neighbouring village of Maro in a third. The installation period is expected to be over by June and significantly improve the internet service for residents and businesses.

Hiker rescued from natural park - 1st Feb 2016

Yesterday officers from the local police force and civil protection service were called upon to carry out a rescue in the nearby natural park. A 58 year old foreign hiker who had left the signposted paths called for help upon realising that he was lost and unable to find his way back to the town at around 7pm. The local services as well as officers of the mountain guardia civil set about searching for the man, locating him late in the evening in an area of difficult access. The decision was made that the safest method of evacuation was by helicopter in the morning meaning an overnight stay for the lost hiker. The individual was safely returned to the town this morning after a quick check up by health centre staff.

New opening times for rubbish tip - 28th Jan 2016

Following numerous enquiries regarding weekend opening times for the municipal punto limpio facility local councillor for the environment, Jorge Bravo Gallardo would like to remind residents that the facility is open every day from 8am until 2pm and that collection of items on an evening can be arranged from 10am until 1pm.

Carnival 2016 program released - 27th Jan 2016

The program for this years carnival which begins on February the 4th was released today with the usual four days of fancy dress, street processions and open air music. This years event will follow the same pattern as previous years with the evening of the first day featuring opening speeches and shows taking place at the cultural centre. The days thereafter will include lots of children's entertainment, competitions in the various costume categories and the main processions of the 6th and 7th. Peace exhibition opens in Sala Mercado - 25th Jan 2016

A new exhibition opened today of work by local school children dedicated to peace in the Sala Mercado. The exhibition which is the work of children from the ten schools of Frigiliana, Nerja and Maro is entitled "Un Solo Mundo" and deals with current world events such as the situation in the middle east and the refugee crisis. The exhibition will remain open until the 29th both mornings and evenings.

Nerja caves festival dates announced - 22nd Jan 2016

The dates for the 57th edition of the Nerja Caves music and dance festival were released today by the Caves Foundation at the FITUR international tourism fair in Madrid. The festival will once again take place in two locations with free concerts in Plaza de España and ticketed events in the Sala de Cascada area of the caverns. The first concert will take place on June 24th with a concert by Ainhoa Arteta and pianist Rubén Fernández-Aguirre while the free concerts will begin on the 9th of July with a performance by Los Vivancos.

Nerja tries something new at FITUR - 20th Jan 2016

Today the annual FITUR international tourism fair began in Madrid with Nerja's councillor for tourism, Patricia Gutiérrez Román, taking the lead in presenting the municipality as an ideal holiday destination. As in previous years the area's sandy beaches and warm summer climate will inevitably be the first images that come to the public's mind but this year the council are seeking to present the town as a destination for the more active visitors highlighting the excellent sporting facilities the municipality has to offer as well as the hiking routes in the nearby natural park. The fair begins just as the prestigious Repsol tourist guide named Nerja as one of its readers top ten villages to visit with particular reference to the views from the Balcón de Europa and the municipality's beaches and coves.

Juan Fernández exhibition opens - 19th Jan 2016

The latest art exhibition to come to the Calle Cristo municipal hall opened today with works by Vélez Málaga artist Juan Fernández Ruiz on display until the 6th of February. The exhibition which is called 'The One and the Multiple' aims to bypass concious logic and reason, instead seeking to invoke the emotional and limbic areas of the brain in a more basic level. If you'd like to go and take a look at the exhibition you can do so each day from 11:30am until 6pm.
