Puente viejo closed for repairs - 21st Oct 2015
The Puente Viejo bridge which crosses the Rio Chillar was closed yesterday for much needed repairs to its surface and drainage capabilities. The work is expected to take up to 15 days with municipal engineers and the Narixa water company both getting involved to resolve the problems caused by a leaking man hole cover and drain. The local council apologises for any inconvenience the bridge closure may cause.
Maroween 2015 - 20th Oct 2015
Maro's traditional Maroween event followed by the sweet potato and chestnut festival is in its final stages of preparation according to the villages festival committee. Maroween, which takes place on the evening of the 31st of October will include the usual ghoulish Halloween costumes and fun while from 2pm on Sunday visitors can enjoy paella in the village square followed by a collection of typical sweets and cakes. There will also be a bus service between Nerja and Maro from 6pm until 2am on Saturday evening.
Police summer savings - 19th Oct 2015
A town hall representative has announced today that thanks to new arrangements concerning police overtime the local service saved almost €30,000 this summer compared to the same time last year. During the months of June, July, August and September the total spend was €50,092, with September bringing the biggest saving of almost €19,000. The figures mark an important saving for the council and local taxpayers whilst the town hall stresses that though the savings are significant the quality of service from officers remains unchanged.
Axarteismo 7 open new exhibition - 16th Oct 2015
A group of five artists, collectively known as Axarteismo 7, will open a new exhibition of their work entitled "Épocas" this evening in La Sala Mercado at 8pm. The group, which is currently made up of Luis Mugar, Tony Palacio, Francisco Granero, Manuela Bueno and José Antonio García was formed in 2013 and is proud to present its fourth exhibition, following previous events in Malaga, Torre del Mar and Velez-Malaga. Each of the members has their own distinct style and artistic vision meaning that an Axarteismo 7 exhibition is always an eclectic mix of ideas and scenes. The exhibition will remain open until the 4th of November, both mornings and evenings until 8pm.
Scruffs 2015 - 14th Oct 2015
The Costa Animal Society is once again holding its Scruffs dog show this weekend looking to raise funds for its year round activities re-homing stray and abandoned animals. This year, the event will be held in the towns centre in Plaza de España directly behind the town hall with judging beginning at 1pm at contestants arriving at 12. There are numerous categories for dogs to compete in including best rescue dog, best pedigree dog and for the more creative owners best fancy dress!
Police focus on illegal street vendors - 13th Oct 2015
The local police service announced a renewed campaign targeting illegal street vendors in the municipality today, including individuals operating without proper licenses and those selling counterfeit goods. The campaign officially started last week with its primary focus on the main commercial streets in the centre of the town. The new push comes following calls from local businesses to tackle the problem which is once again reaching unacceptable levels, causing a negative impact on local shops and restaurants.
Pedestrian left seriously injured after motorcycle accident - 12th Oct 2015
Local police detained a motorcyclist on Saturday morning following a collision on the pedestrian crossing at the bus station which left one person seriously injured. Officers arrived quickly on the scene, detaining the driver and attending to the injured party who was transferred to Málaga provincial hospital, following the crash which occurred at approximately 7:15. Upon further investigation it became clear that the motorcyclist had been drinking and just prior to the incident driving in an erratic fashion.
Feria opens with surprise - 9th Oct 2015
Those who went along to the Nerja Feria opening ceremony last night had a surprise in store with an unexpected pyrotechnics display taking place after the opening speech by Andrés Francisco Pérez González on the Balcón de Europa. The display was accompanied by lights, music and images from past ferias projected onto the church of El Salvador leaving the square awash with light much the the surprise of the gathered crowd. Without doubt this years opening ceremony was a great success with greater numbers of people being able to see thanks to the relocation of the ceremony to the Balcón de Europa providing much more space for those who wished to attend.
Chess minds meet in feria chess tournament - 7th Oct 2015
In another first for the coming Nerja Feria, the Balcón de Europa chess club will be staging its first Feria Chess tournament on Saturday from 10am in Plaza de España. Contenders will be split into two categories, those below 12 years of age and those above with inscriptions welcome until Friday afternoon in the town halls sports office. Anybody interested is welcome to take part with first, second and third places all receiving trophies!
Graffiti removed from river banks - 6th Oct 2015
Following on from the river cleaning excursion which proved such a success a couple of weeks ago the municipal cleaning and civil protection services today tackled graffiti on the rocks and tree trunks along the Rio Chillars banks. Representatives used high pressure water jets to gradually remove the paint taking particular care on the trees which in some cases have already suffered negative effects due to the chemical composition of the paints used. This is the final task to be undertaken in this years river clean up which sadly becomes more necessary with each passing year due to the ever increasing popularity of the river during the summer months.
New vehicles for Civil Guard - 5th Oct 2015
This morning Nerja's local police chief delivered two motorbikes to representatives of the civil protection service for use in their daily duties. Up until now the service has only had the use of three relatively low powered bikes which though suitable for the town were not sufficient for the tasks that the service regularly carries out in the rural areas of the municipality. The bikes, which were previously used by local police officers have been serviced and returned to peak condition ready for the handover which took place at the entrance to the main town hall building with the mayoress and other local officials taking part.
Fire services battle campo fire - 1st Oct 2015
Eagle eyed residents and visitors may well have spotted yesterday evening smoke rising over the Natural Park on the eastern side of the town. Local emergency services were alerted to a campo fire in the Cabeza del Caballo area of the park with three aerial units, two fire trucks and numerous fire officers being called to the scene. The fire was located in an area not easily accessible and with very little vegetation leading officials to conclude that the fire was likely started by a lightening strike although this has not been verified. By 8pm the fire was judged to be under control with aerial units returning to base leaving fire officers to finish the job and make the area safe.
