Botanical garden nears completion - 24th Nov 2015

A meeting was held today to discuss the finishing touches to Nerja's new botanical garden which will soon be opening once final paperwork is completed. The garden, which is situated within the Sierras de Tejada, Almijara and Alhama natural park, is located next to the Nerja Caves complex at Maro and has been designed by Isabel Amores and Modesto García. The new attraction will provide numerous educational facilities with exterior classrooms, workshops and on-site laboratory while also providing a tranquil environment for the general public to enjoy with a rockery, mirador and small lagoon.

Successful weekend for local athletes - 23rd Nov 2015

Nerja's athletics club enjoyed a highly successful Sunday last weekend with club members taking part in the Álora athletics meet climbing the podium a total of 16 times to receive medals in the various categories. The event included races over varying distances from 300m up to 7.5km and is organized in conjunction with the regional Malaga council. Seven of the recipients took the top spot in categories ranging from female juniors with Lillian Cazorla winning the category to female veterans with María Sánchez taking the victory.

Black Friday comes to Nerja - 19th Nov 2015

With this years Black Friday coming closer councillor Mari Carmen González Ortega has announced that Nerja will also be taking part in the event on the 27th of November with discounts of up to 50%. Shoppers will be able to take advantage of the bargains on offer until 11am at night in Nerja Centro affiliated stores as well others who've chosen to opt-in to the initiative. Just look for the Black Friday posters in participating store windows!

Homegrown theatre this Friday - 18th Nov 2015

"Amigas pa siempre" by the Grupo de Oro will be this Friday's performance at the Nerja Cultural Centre, starting at 9pm with an entrance fee of €4. The play is a family comedy and the product of the workshops held at the Nerja women's centre.

Nerja Yawara-Jitsu club competes in nationals - 17th Nov 2015

This weekend members of Nerja's Yawara-Jitsu club will head to Mula in the province of Murcia to take part in the the 11th national Yawara-Jitsu tournament. Yawara-Jitsu is a martial art, first developed here in Málaga in 1975 which takes a scientific approach to self defence using techniques from numerous other fighting styles. A total of 8 members will be taking part in the three categories of the competition, personal defence, kata and combat. All ages will be on display with a junior member, two juveniles and four seniors all taking part as well as one in the beginners category.

Civil protection service looks for volunteers - 16th Nov 2015

Nerja's voluntary Civil Protection Service opened its doors to new recruits today with the announcement that it will be accepting new applications from those wishing to join until the 11 of December. The service has become an increasingly visible presence in the town over recent years helping with processions, patrolling the beaches in summer and assisting the emergency services of the town with mountain rescues. Those wishing to apply can pick up a form in the civil protection office at 80 Calle Carabeo in the mornings and get more information by sending an email to proteccioncivil@nerja.es

Cudeca hiker reaches Nerja - 13th Nov 2015

Councillor for sport Cristina Fernández Pinto welcomed Juan Andrés Camacho to the municipality last night as he continues his hike along the Gran Senda de Málaga to raise awareness of the work done by the Cuedeca cancer charity. The young fundraiser set off this morning on the third stage of his journey with the aim of reaching Canillas de Aceituno in the Sierra de Tejada before the end of the day. The Gran Senda de Málaga is a 700km long hiking route which passes through coastal towns from Estepona all the way to Maro as well as the more mountainous parts of the province. Juan Andrés hopes to complete the route in just 11 days meaning an average of almost 64km on each stage.

Cultural centre presents Inma Montalvo show - 12th Nov 2015

This Friday at 9pm the Nerja Cultural Centre will play host to 'La Culpa es de la Vaca', a new dance-theatre show by Inma Montalvo. Inma describes the show as a work which will take you on a thought provoking journey, leading you through conflicting emotions and sensations eventually bringing you back to where you began. Tickets cost €5 and are available from the centres box office.

Christmas program planning begins - 11th Nov 2015

Local councillor Mari Carmen González Ortega will chair meetings this week with local businesses and community leaders to continue the planning of activities for the coming Christmas holiday period. These meetings have already begun with shops and restaurants in the main commercial streets of Pintada, Gloria, Cristo and Hernando de Carabeo already being discussed while later in the week Plazas Cavana and Tutti Frutti will be on the agenda with particular reference to the Christmas parties which will take place in the later. The meetings are particularly aimed at avoiding the problems of past years which have occurred in these areas as well as drawing up a fun program for residents and visitors alike.

200 take part in weekend cycle race - 10th Nov 2015

Some 200 cyclists took part in the Villa de Nerja cycle race on Sunday which brought to a close the provincial cycle marathon program for 2015. The race, which was the 9th such event held in the province this year, was won by the Granada born Francisco Robles in 2 hours and 23 minutes. Jesus Perez came in second a minute and a half behind Robles while Victor Bueno took the final podium position.

Nerja features in new Pablo Alborán album - 9th Nov 2015

The Málaga born singer Pablo Alborán has chosen a number of songs recorded during his July concert in the Nerja Caves as part of the annual music and dance festival for the special edition of his new album 'Tour Terral. Tres noches en las Ventas'. The compilation album was launched last Friday and features live recordings from his summer tour with many songs coming from concerts in Madrid however the local singer also sought to include memorable moments such as his Nerja concert which he described as a "very special concert". The album is now available to purchase with songs 'Desencuentro' and 'Entre un compás', which were both recorded in Nerja featuring in the special and deluxe editions.

Villa de Nerja cycle race this weekend - 5th Nov 2015

This morning the final arrangements were made for the second BTT Villa de Nerja cycle race which will take place on the 8th of November. The event, which is now included in the official calender of the Andalucian cycle federation, caters for two levels of difficultly with a 65km route for those wishing to compete and a 32km route for those just looking for a leisure ride at their own pace. The two events will begin at 8:30 am in the Verano Azul park on the western side of Nerja. For more information visit xbikenerja.com.
