Nerja's Christmas market gets cancelled - 18th Dec 2014

Councillor for popular traditions, Sandra Jimena, announced today that the Christmas Market which was to be held in Plaza de España behind the main town hall building during the festive period has been cancelled. She stressed that the reasons for the cancellation were beyond the control of the Town Hall and that all necessary parties had already been informed. She also indicated that the town hall intends to hold the market at later dates to allow interested local businesses and other organisations to take part.

Local girl sets sights on Olympics - 16th Dec 2014

One of Nerja's top volley ball players Ángela Lobato looks well placed to progress to the next stage of the Olympic Passport initiative, currently placed at the top of the leader board in her category of most promising sportswoman. Fellow Nerja volleyball player Paula Soria is also in the running for the category with success leading to the next hurdle where candidates will be scrutinized by a 15 strong panel of former international sportsman. The Olympic passport scheme, which the best sportspeople in Spain are nominated for, provides talented young athletes with support and benefits to aid them in their pursuit of a place on the Spanish Olympic team.

Christmas treats go head to head! - 11th Dec 2014

On the 28th December the important business of Nerja's annual Christmas cake competition will get underway in Plaza de España. Wannabe contestants have until the 14th to put their names down for one of the categories which include traditional cakes, deserts and international desserts with each having a top prize of €100 for the winner. It's well worth going along, with the Abanico de Ilusiones choir giving a performance and more importantly the opportunity for the general public to try the entrants desserts once the competition has been decided.

Sweet wine and migas in Maro - 10th Dec 2014

If you were in Maro last Sunday you would surely have had a merry time with the villages first ever wine contest. Dozens of contestants from the Axarquia and Granada regions submitted their sweet wines ( known locally as vino del terreno) for the judges to sample. The panel of Judges eventually gave the first prize to Juan Cobos from Almáchar but local contestants did well too with second place going to Antonio Moreno from Frigiliana and third to Maro resident Miguel Muñoz.

Christmas traditions on display - 9th Dec 2014

Last week a new exhibition was opened in Nerja to mark the passing on of one of the towns most important Christmas responsibilities. For over 40 years local woman Encarnita Kronox has designed and tailored numerous outfits for the towns annual Three Kings procession. These include outfits for the kings but also the many pages which accompany them as they travel through the streets throwing sweets to local children eager to catch al glimpse. The baton has now been passed on to José Manuel Moreno but not before exhibiting many of the elaborate costumes that Encarnita has created over the years. If you'd like to take a look at the collection go along to the Calle Cristo municipal hall. It will be open to the public until January 5th.

Christmas festivities begin this weekend - 5th Dec 2014

The Christmas activities officially begin in Nerja this weekend with the opening of the towns traditional nativity scene in the municipal hall in Calle Cristo. From 6:30 pm on Saturday evening visitors will be able to take a look over this years scene put together by José Manuel Triviño using recycled materials and with the collaboration of the Catholic brotherhood of "El Resucitado". Anybody can go along and take a peek from 10am - 2pm and from 5:50pm - 9:30pm until January 5th.

New surface for El Pinarillo access? - 3rd Dec 2014

A council representative has today announced that the town hall is looking to come to an agreement with the provincial environmental authority to improve the access road to the El Pinarillo picnic site in the nearby natural park of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama. The road, which is regularly used by walkers and vehicles, is currently made up of loose material which is easily washed away in times of heavy rain causing access problems for park rangers as well as the general public. The park is increasingly seen as a new area of expansion by the towns tourism officials and as a result the access road of greater and greater importance. The motion, which has already been approved in a recent council meeting, will now lead to an official request being made before the end of the year.

Town hall seeks recognition for La Ermita - 2nd Dec 2014

Following a vote in the last local council meeting the Nerja town hall is set to apply for the status of "Site of Cultural Interest" to be awarded to the small chapel located in Plaza de la Ermita. The chapel, which is undoubtedly one of the hidden gems of the town, dates from the 18th century and is the year round resting place on the towns patron saint, the Virgin of Anguish. Should the application prove successful, the site will be added to a register of similarly important cultural sites located throughout Spain and be covered by a special legal protection as well as receiving extra funds for its continued maintenance.

Martial arts tournament comes to Nerja this weekend - 27th Nov 2014

If you're a martial arts enthusiast or just at a loose end this weekend you might like to go along to the 10th national Yawara-Jitsu tournament which is being held this Saturday in the Pabellon Cubierto (behind the sports stadium) from 10am. Various competitions will be included in the event ranging from set routines (Katas), technical events as well as full combat with clubs from all over Spain taking part.

Parks and gardens team get new vehicles - 26th Nov 2014

Nieves Atencia, councillor with responsibility for parks and gardens in Nerja, announced today that the town hall is to purchase 2 new vans for the team that maintains the municipality's open spaces. The vehicles will primarily be used by the team of gardeners who maintain the public green spaces and parks although they'll also be made available to the beach clean up services to make the maintenance of El Playazo and Maro beaches more efficient. This news comes at the same time as work is set to begin on Plaza de la Marina to replace severely deteriorated safety and hand rails.

Local volley ball players selected for regional team - 24th Nov 2014

Four pupils from the Nerja municipal volleyball school were selected this weekend to join the Andalucian volleyball squad at a meeting organised by the regional federation. The boy and three girls will now regularly train with some of the best players in Andalucia and will hopefully represent the province in one of the many teams the federation will put forward in future competitions. The municipal volleyball school frequently enjoys success in many local and regional tournaments and hopes are high that this latest success will prove to be a stepping stone toward the national team.

Guardia Civil buildings receive upgrades - 20th Nov 2014

Thanks to an agreement between the Malaga provincial council and the Spanish ministry for the interior funds have been made available enabling works to be carried out on the Guardia Civil buildings in Calle San Miguel opposite Mercadona. The initiative which is in effect in a number of local municipality's, will see €500,000 made available over the next two years with 50% of the funds coming from the provincial council and the rest from the Guradia Civil's own budget. The works on this ocassion were to improve the roof, carpark and numerous areas susceptible to damp.
