Healthy participation in Seniors sports meetup - 18th Nov 2014

Last weekend the fifteenth annual senior sports meetup was held in Alhaurin el Grande with participants coming together from across the province to enjoy a day of activities devoted to sport and well being. A group of 50 of Nerja's more senior residents made their way to the event which not only looks to encourage greater levels of activity amongst the older generation but also provide a vehicle for new friendships to be forged between people who may not otherwise meet. Many of the participants are already well ahead of their peers, undertaking three or more sporting activities each week and getting into good habits that will hopefully rub off on their friends, neighbours and relatives.

Nerja's annual deep clean take place this Sunday - 12th Nov 2014

Next Sunday from 10am the Nerja diving centre will once again undertake its now annual task of cleaning the sea bed just off Nerja's coastline. The group of some 150 volunteers will focus their efforts on the key areas of Torrecilla, Playazo and Barranco de Maro, with 40 divers amongst the group with the rest supporting. Thanks to the prolonged good weather this years "deep clean " is set to take place later than in previous years although the diving centre expects to find similar amounts of plastics which will make up the bulk of the rubbish they'll likely collect. For their efforts the volunteers will receive a tshirt, participation diploma and free lunch courtesy of the Burriana chiringuitos who collaborate in this annual initiative.

Agreement reached on proposed new beach improvements - 4th Nov 2014

Local councillor Nieves Atencia today confirmed that the collaboration agreement that we reported upon some weeks ago between the town hall, Malaga council and a consortium representing the municipalities of the Axarquia region now has cross party agreement here in Nerja. The initiative which will see new funds for improving beach facilities such as showers, changing rooms and lifeguard watchtowers is expected to provide some €120,000 of extra funding to the town hall, 15,000 less than originally expected but still a sizeable sum. Nerja's mayor, José Alberto Armijo, has thanked the organisations involved for their continuing efforts to promote the image of the eastern Costa del Sol adding that the Junta de Andalusia should revise its current policy and follow the example being given.

Longer Maroween proves a success - 3rd Nov 2014

This years longer than usual Chestnut and Sweet Potato festival known locally as Maroween has been labelled a great success by Nerja's councillors for culture and popular traditions. The event, which this year spanned an entire weekend instead of the customary single evening included a wide range of new activities, principally aimed at younger visitors, although the street market and tapas route also proved popular with the adults. The busiest day was Friday, specifically in the evening with many residents and visitors taking the opportunity to enjoy the roast chestnuts and sweet potatoes on offer in the village square although the events held in the Nerja Cultural Centre also drew the crowds with more people taking an interest than the centre could accommodate.

Good luck to all those participating from the explorenerja.com team!!
