New tourists of honour to be named - 28th Aug 2014

At a recent town hall meeting local officials voted unanimously to name Carlos Martínez Ramos, Juan José Sánchez Villa and Antonio Pozueco Pérez Tourists of Honour for 2014. The trio, who may not be familiar to many, were key figures in the production of the popular Spanish TV series Verano Azul which was filmed in Nerja in the early 80's. The show, which enjoyed enormous national success, still draws people to the town now, eager to visit the locations seen in the series. The three have continued to visit and promote Nerja long since the end of filming and will be thanked in a small ceremony on September 12th.

Feria de las Maravillas approaches - 27th Aug 2014

The neighbouring village of Maro is now in the final stages of preparation for its annual feria in honour of the village's patron saint, the Virgin of Wonders. This year the festivities begin on the 5th of September from 6pm with an urban road race and continue until the 8th. Take a look at our page here for more details.

Police seize counterfeit goods - 26th Aug 2014

Officers from Nerja's local police have once again been setting their sights on illegal street traders as part of a summer long campaign. During recent days hundreds of items, including clothes, handbags and jewellery have been seized with the primary focus being on the Balcon de Europa, Calle Carabeo, Calle Malaga and Plaza de los Cangrejos areas. The majority of the items were copies of well-known brands with the individual's involved now facing prosecution for trading without a license.

Public exhibition of planned Playazo promenade - 20th Aug 2014

José Alberto Armijo, the mayor of Nerja, held a meeting this week with the sub-director of Costas, the organisation with responsibility for control and planning permissions along the Spanish coastline. They spoke about a number of issues important to Nerja including the proposed new promenade along El Playazo beach which is now open to public consultation. The project, which is part of a total redevelopment plan for El Playazo, will be carried out in stages and include new sporting facilities, car parks and works to widen the beach.

Regional council president visits Balcon - 19th Aug 2014

Elías Bendodo, the president of the provincial council of Malaga, has visited Nerja to take a look at the new lighting now in place around the Balcon de Europa on the Calahonda, Chorrillo and Salón beaches which the council recently funded. He was accompanied by Nerja's mayor, José Alberto Armijo, as well as other local politicians to see what impact €90,000 of lighting has on one of the region's most well-known tourism symbols. The new illuminations which are a mix of both conventional and LED lighting are primarily focused on the cliffs and walkways in the Balcon area providing a number of different colour combinations.

Busy sporting weekend or Nerja - 18th Aug 2014

Last weekend was yet another hectic one for local sport with an open water swimming competition for both youngsters and adults on Burriana beach and teams from the town's municipal volleyball school in action against each other in a competition also held at Burriana. In both competitions numerous prizes were awarded for the various age groups and categories by local councillor Inocencia Quintero.

Andy & Lucas concert a huge success - 17th Aug 2014

Plaza de España was absolutely packed for the concert by the Spanish duo Andy & Lucas last night, who are currently touring Spain promoting their latest album "Más de Diez". Mixed in with many of their greatest hits, which the crowd enthusiastically sang along to, were songs from their new disc and dedications to local people including Ana María Márquez, the manager of the natural history museum, who was recently killed in a suspected case of domestic violence. The concert was finished off with a fireworks display before the duo made their way through the crowds of fans with the aid of local police to their hotel for the night.

Huge turnout for summer white party - 15th Aug 2014

Last night's white party has been declared a great success by its organisers with hundreds of people turning out for the annual beach fiesta. Local officials remarked at how well the fiesta went with very few incidents for the police and medical staff who were on site to deal with. The next public event on this year's August calendar is a free concert in Plaza de España by Spanish duo Andy & Lucas on Saturday from 10:30pm.

Delays for town centre blinds - 14th Aug 2014

The town hall has announced that the blinds expected to be installed in some of the busiest streets in Nerja over the summer period have not been forgotten although have fallen foul of the ever predictable red tape. The installation deadline, which was originally set to the 14th August, has now been extended to September 30th meaning the blinds, which are being designed to last for up to fifteen years, will likely not be installed for use during the hottest part of the year.

Beach clean-ups continue for another week - 13th Aug 2014

The authorities have continued to target illegal camps on the municipality's beaches this week, today removing a Senegalese man from the coves east of La Calahonda beach. The man, who was detained by police for illegally remaining in Spain, was charged with two further offences related to his illegal campsite. On this occasion some 250 kilos of rubbish were removed from the beach by boat thanks to the municipal cleaning services and local lifeguards.

New Wi-Fi zone opens - 12th Aug 2014

The youth department of the town hall has opened a Wi-Fi summer terrace available for residents as well as visitors to use up until October. The terrace, which is located in the youth information centre in Calle Cristo provides an area away from the summer crowds where young people can study or meet up with friends. Those wishing to use the new facility can do so Monday to Friday from 10am until 2pm and from 5:30pm until 9:30pm.

White party next week - 8th Aug 2014

With the arrival of August comes the annual Nerja White Party which this year is planned for the evening of the 14th. The party, which is organised by the town halls youth department in conjunction with a number of local bars and night clubs will be held on El Salon beach this year instead of La Torrecilla as was the case last year. All are welcome (as long as you're wearing white) to the event which starts at 9:30pm and will go on well into the night.
