River cleaning planned - 17th Sep 2014

In what is now becoming an annual event in Nerja, this Sunday residents and visitors with a conservationist mind set are invited to take part in a morning of river bank cleaning along the Rio Chillar and Rio Los Cahorros. In what is now the fourth such event in as many years, litter and rubbish is removed by the bagful from the banks following the busy summer months, leaving the rivers in a far more tidy, but above all, healthy state. Those interested in taking part need to be at the Calle Mirto car park, near the Tuesday market site at 8:30 am.

New funds for fire station project - 16th Sep 2014

The mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, has announced the approval by the regional council of Malaga of 700,000€ of funding for the towns proposed new fire station. The project, which has already been through various planning stages, has remained largely paralysed over the last year with funds previously promised by the Junta de Andalucía not being provided. With the extra money the project can now finally move forward with the bidding process for the construction contract soon to begin.

Increase in museum visitors over the summer - 15th Sep 2014

Last summer the Nerja natural history museum recorded a fantastic increase in visitors during the months of July and August, with 4149 individuals taking the opportunity to visit the facility, an increase of 70% over the same period last year. The increase is thought to be down to a number of factors including a change in opening hours and greater information about the museum available at the Nerja Caves. The increase is part of a continuing upwards trend however, which notably saw 60% more visitors over the 2014 Easter period.

More illegal camp sites removed - 12th Sep 2014

The council's fight against illegal campers continued this week with the gaze of the authorities moving inland from the beaches and focusing on the three illegal camps located at the foot of the Eagle Aqueduct located between Nerja and Maro. Local police found seven individuals of differing nationalities camping in the area and brought a variety of charges against them. Once the individuals had been removed the municipal cleaning services arrived to clear the site, eventually taking away almost 200 kilos of rubbish.

New photography exhibition opens to the public - 11th Sep 2014

A new exhibition of photographs by Guillermo Som entitled "Autumn daybreak in Nerja" is now open to the public in the Calle Cristo exhibition hall. The collection, which will remain open until September 29th, is comprised of photographs taken in the Autumn of last year, mainly at daybreak on the beaches near the centre of town. The images are all available for purchase with proceeds being donated to Nerja's 'Taller de la Amistad', an organisation which aids the physically and mentally handicapped.

Safety improvements called for - 10th Sep 2014

During a recent visit by local officials to the Nueva Nerja college safety concerns have arisen regarding the works that are currently under way to install a new lift. Local councillor for education, Gema Garcia, has been particularly vocal over these concerns, contacting the regional authority for schools in an attempt to put further safety measures in place before the beginning of the new school year. With considerable amounts of work still to be done before the project's completion both local government and the school itself are seeking to find an acceptable solution to safeguard against any accidents.

Feria de las Maravillas comes to an end - 9th Sep 2014

Last night the procession of the Virgin Mary through the streets brought Maro's Feria de las Maravillas to an end for another year. The Virgin was accompanied by Nerja's municipal band as well as numerous residents, neighbours and foreigners as she made her way around the village, eventually returning back to the chapel in the village square to be greeted by various local groups dancing and playing music in her honour. This year's procession was particularly poignant as for the first time ever a women was amongst those that carried the idol through the streets.

Nerja plays host to top basketball teams - 5th Sep 2014

Elías Bendodo, president of the regional council, announced yesterday which teams will be taking part in the 4th Costa del Sol basketball tournament. The news was of great interest to both Nerja and Frigiliana with both towns due to host matches as part of the event which will take place on the 11th, 12th and 13th of September. The pre-season tournament will include the top national teams of Real Madrid, Valencia Baskét and Unicaja Málaga with Valencia playing Madrid in Frigiliana on Friday and Málaga playing Madrid in Nerja the following day.

Malaga football team enjoys a training day in Nerja - 4th Sep 2014

This morning the Malaga football team came to town with a day of training planned along the municipality's coastline. The footballers and various members of the clubs support staff took to the water in what was a training session with a difference, kayaking from Burriana beach to La Caleta de Maro. The arrival of the players caused something of a stir on Burriana with fans eager to get autographs and take photos with team members.

96% hotel occupancy during August - 2nd Sep 2014

According to information supplied by the municipal tourist office, Nerja hotels surpassed 96% occupancy during the month of August. The figure, which puts Nerja well ahead of the overall coastal average, was described as "very encouraging" by Bernardo Pozuelo, regional councilor for tourist development. The lowest occupancy rate of any hotel in Nerja was 92% with the most popular reaching a perfect 100%.

Biblioplayas reach end of the season - 1st Sep 2014

Local councilor for culture, Gema Garcia, has spoken this week of the continuing success enjoyed by Nerja's Biblioplayas which this year included a third addition on El Salon beach. The temporary beach libraries have now been operating for over ten years in Nerja and have proven year on year to be popular with beach goers providing books in multiple languages as well as tourist information to visitors. The libraries function thanks to the collaboration between various local organizations including the Nerja Caves Foundation and the Diariosur newspaper, as well as the donations and encouragement received from those that use the service.

Town hall pushes for healthcare improvements - 29th Aug 2014

The local council have agreed upon two motions to apply to the Junta de Andalucía for improvements to the town's medical services. Specifically the aim of the first motion is for the local health centre to offer physical therapy and orthopaedic services which were discontinued last year. The second motion will act to officially reject the 2014 summer healthcare plan on the grounds that it leaves the municipality without adequate coverage, falling below recognised acceptable levels.
