Municipality receives provincial funds - 7th Aug 2014

Nerja's mayor, José Alberto Armijo, announced today that Nerja is set to receive a €215,000 loan at 0% from the provincial council of Malaga as part of a new initiative. The money which will be split up into monthly payments over the next two years comes without constraints as to how it can be spent meaning the town hall is free to use the funds in any way it sees fit. The initiative, which is comprised of an overall pot of €10 million is open to all 96 town halls of the region with funds available to each local authority being directly linked to local council tax incomes.

Illegal beach campers removed - 6th Aug 2014

In a continuation of the campaign underway to remove illegal campers from the municipality's beaches, local officials descended this morning on the Caleta de Maro beach resulting in action being taken over seven separate offences. The raid, which also counted on the support of the municipal cleaning services, saw the removal of some 300 kilos of rubbish which had been accumulated by the campers. By the end of the morning the beach was left in a natural state.

Crowds enjoy summer shows - 5th Aug 2014

The August cultural program which started at the beginning of the month is proving to be quite a success with both residents and visitors judging by the crowds turning out to watch the performers. The activities, which will continue this week in locations throughout the town, begin with a free flamenco performance by the Peña Flamenca La Soleá in Plaza de los Cangrejos near La Torrecilla beach starting at 10pm. With this plaza being the focus of the evening shows it's well worth dropping by each evening after 10pm to see what's going on!

Police crackdown on unlicensed street vendors - 4th Aug 2014

Last weekend local police cracked down on the sale of illegal merchandise by unlicensed street vendors throughout the municipality in an operation set to continue throughout the month of August and early September. Amongst the items confiscated were large numbers of watches, garments, hats and bags, many of which were fakes of well-known brands. It was not only wearable products that were seized though with officials also confiscating numerous bottles of alcohol from young people enjoying "Botellon", the practice of meeting up in car parks and drinking with friends, which is now illegal throughout Andalucia.

Free concert in Plaza de España - 1st Aug 2014

Music lovers may be interested to learn of a free concert set to take place in the Plaza de España on the 16th of August from 22:30. Local councillor, Gema García, announced the concert by the duo "Andy & Lucas" who are currently touring the country to promote their new record El Ritmo de las Olas (The Rhythm of the Waves). If you'd like to get an idea of the kind of music to expect, take a look here at one of their videos and maybe they'll inspire you to go along.

Illegal camping targeted in La Cala del Lobo - 31st Jul 2014

This morning local police officers took action against a number of illegal camp sites in La Cala de Lobo Marino. This is the second time this summer that the police, with the assistance of the Guardia Civil and the public cleaning service have taken such action in this particular area of the municipality's coastline, with other such operations also being carried out on various local beaches including El Playazo and the coves along the disused Paseo de los Carabineros.

New resources to keep Nerja tidy - 30th Jul 2014

The town hall has announced its receipt of some 223 new rubbish containers which will quickly be visible in various locations around the town. The new bins, which are slightly larger, will replace damaged ones currently in use but also be placed in areas to cope with increasing demand, increasing the overall capacity for residents and visitors to use. Almost half of the new bins are specifically for recycling plastics and will replace the existing models allowing the authorities to adopt a new, more efficient collection method using side loading vehicles cutting down on overall collection time.

August program begins - 29th Jul 2014

The summer's cultural program begins this Wednesday in the Plaza de los Cangrejos near Torrecilla beach, with the first of some 60 performances that will take place in various locations around Nerja and Maro. The program, which will continue until August 31st, has been organised by the town hall with collaboration from various local groups and will begin with a performance by Diamonds Campus. The list of performers is quite diverse with modern dance and flamenco on display as well as activities for the children and outdoor cinemographic projections. For further information ask in the tourist office located near the Balcón de Europa.

Music and dance festival comes to a close - 28th Jul 2014

The singer Diana Navarro brought the 55 annual Nerja Caves festival to an end last Saturday with the final of this year's performances to yet another packed audience. The Malaga singer, accompanied by the Aljarafe orchestra, sang a number of her most popular hits and some new pieces from her latest disc. After the performance the mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, spoke of the success of the four, free, open air shows held on the Balcón de Europa, attributing their success to the quality of the performers which took part, many of which have Nerja connections. Baby dolphin rescued - 26th Jul 2014

It's been reported that today a baby dolphin has been rescued after beaching itself on the Caleta de Maro beach. A family discovered the dolphin this morning and immediately contacted the authorities sparking a reaction from both local and provincial organisations. Local lifeguards managed to guide to weakened creature, estimated to be only 18 months old, to Maro beach where it was attended to by representatives of the Recuperation Centre for Endangered Marine Species (CREMA) before being transported to Malaga for further health checks.

Music and dance festival well underway - 25th Jul 2014

The 55th annual Nerja Caves music and dance festival is well underway, with a number of performances taking place in recent days on the Balcon de Europa as well as the first performance in the Caves themselves. Last night the town's municipal band gave a free performance on the Balcon, closing the first part of the festival which is once again as varied as ever with ballet from the Peru National Ballet lining up next to traditional Flamenco from the region and numerous classical performances. The festival will finish on Saturday with a performance by Diana Navarro accompanied by the Aljarafe orchestra in the Sala de la Cascada of the Nerja Caves .

Maro beach in the running for best Spanish beach again - 23rd Jul 2014

Once again Maro beach is to be included in the annual Antena 3 "Spain's best beach" competition. Last year Maro was voted to be the best beach in the region of Andalucía by the television stations poll, with 6,381 votes made by the public via its website which can be found here. The voting in the regional heats will remain open until the end of July after which the national competition will begin with the best regional beaches being voted on until one winner is chosen.
