Summer Salsa competition - 22nd Jul 2014
The youth department of the town hall has organised a summer salsa competition which will be held on the 12th of August in Plaza de los Cangrejos near La Torrecilla beach. The competition will be a simple one with only one "freestyle" category within which competitors can dance any style of salsa they like whether it be Cuban, Colombian or Puerto Rican. A maximum of 10 couples can take part in the event with €150 prize money for the winning couple.
Wildfire protection planning - 21st Jul 2014
Local emergency service officials met with town councillors today to discuss measures for the annual problem of wildfires in the nearby natural parks, with particular attention paid to the urban areas located near their boundaries. Councillor Inocencia Quintero chaired the meeting which focused on a wide range of topics from preventative measures to revising access and infrastructure networks to provide the quickest possible response to any incident. The meeting included representatives of the Guardia Civil, Local Police, Guardia Civil and Fire Service.
Hundreds follow the Virgen's procession - 18th Jul 2014
Hundreds turned out see the procession of the Virgen del Carmen through the streets on Wednesday night with similar numbers enjoying the Moraga in Plaza de los Cangrejos the following evening, bringing this short annual festival to an end for another year. The crowds enjoyed some 200 kilos of Sardines, a typical fisherman's meal, prepared by members of the Brotherhood of the Virgen del Carmen, with revenue from drinks sales going to fund the brotherhoods activities throughout the rest of the year.
Feria poster competition begins - 17th Jul 2014
As is traditional within Nerja, the competition is now underway to find this year's poster for the Nerja Feria which will be used to advertise the event. The competition, which is open to any EU citizen, comes with €300 prize money for the winning entrant and will be open to new submissions until the 22nd of August. Designs need to be either A3 or A4 in size but artists can use a large variety of methods to produce their posters, either electronically or with traditional materials such as oils or watercolours.
Helicopter pad inaugurated - 16th Jul 2014
Regional councillor for health, Daniel Pérez, and Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, have today officially opened the towns new helicopter pad for use by emergency services, principally medical helicopters via Spain's 061 service. The new heliport, built overlooking the turn-off to Burriana beach, has been built on land made available by the Nerja council and means that emergency helicopters will no longer have to use the pitch in the Enrique López Cuenca sports stadium.
Walkers rescued from Rio Chillar - 15th Jul 2014
Early this morning two Spanish women, aged 28 and 29 were rescued after getting lost whilst walking the Rio Chillar. The alarm was raised at 10pm in the evening by one of the girl's sisters at the local police station, leading to agents of the civil protection force being called. Fortunately the girls were within mobile phone range and were able to give rescuers enough information to narrow the search down to the "Fábrica de la Luz" area of the natural park. The girls were eventually located in the early hours and brought back to Nerja.
New parks furniture - 11th Jul 2014
Local councillor with responsibility for public parks and gardens, Nieves Atencia, has announced that many of the town's benches and public furniture is to be renewed in a new program of improvements. The El Pinarillo picnic area in the national park has already had new tables, benches and hand rails installed with the Plaza de la Marina and Torrecilla beach next on the list.
Raising recycling awareness - 10th Jul 2014
The Malaga provincial council is now starting a new campaign of environmental information and awareness highlighting the importance of recycling for the preservation of coastal ecosystems. The new campaign covers various municipalities in the Axarquia, Nerja being amongst them, and is primarily aimed at beach users although the council hopes the recycling message will reach the public in general. Marina Bravo, environmental minister for the region, explained that the campaigns objective is to further improve the attitudes and habits of the public through a variety of activities as well as provide guidance through information points.
New art exhibition opens - 9th Jul 2014
Today a new art exhibition by husband and wife artists Francisco Quero y Carmen Moyano opened in Nerja in the towns Calle Cristo municipal hall. The collection of 50 images is entitled "The sensuality and the eroticism" and features images from the artist's private collection that the public may particularly like. The exhibition will be open until the 22nd of July both morning and evenings from 11am - 2pm and then from 7pm - 10pm.
Procession of the Virgen del Carmen - 8th Jul 2014

Summer long basketball tournament begins - 5th Jul 2014
Last Thursday saw the beginning of the 35th Nerja Basketball tournament which will continue throughout the summer months of July and August. Eight teams are set to battle it out in the competition dedicated to the memory of local man Juan Muñoz for his significant contribution to sporting activities in the town. Games will be held every Thursday and Friday evening from 8:30pm at the municipal indoor sports centre behind the outdoor stadium.
Date set for white party - 4th Jul 2014
Preparations are now underway for the annual white party organised by the town halls youth department as part of the Nerja Crea+ program. Although further details are currently not available we know that the date set for the increasingly popular party, which had to be cancelled last year due to poor weather, is the 14th of August with the event likely to be held on La Torrecilla beach, as in previous years.
