Verbena de San Cristóbal - 3rd Jul 2014
The 'Barriada de los Poetas' has released details of its annual festival which this year will be held on the 11th and 12th of July. The events, which are organised by the neighbourhoods residents association, will begin with the third Barriada de los Poetas football league and from there continue into the night with the Saint Michael brass band marching through the streets announcing the beginning of the activities with music, food and competitions in the official marquee from 8pm well into the evening. The following day the football leagues final will take place as well as entertainment for the kids with an assortment of activities leading up to the final evening's events kicking off from 6pm with more music and festivities culminating in a fireworks display.
Nerja included in new infrastructure investments - 2nd Jul 2014
With the intention of stimulating the local economy and improving unemployment statistics the Malaga Provincial Council has allotted €724,000 to infrastructure improvements in various towns throughout the region, including Nerja. The town hall is expecting to receive approximately €88,000 from the council for improvements to Calle Trancos, as well as a further €65,000 sum intended for work on Calle Iglesia and Calle Tajillo.
Verano Azul re-mastered - 30th Jun 2014
The popular 'Verano Azul' TV series, filmed in Nerja in the late 70's, will once again be shown on Spanish television this year. The ever popular program which has seen great success both in Spain and abroad has had its nineteen episodes fully re-mastered for new audiences and will be shown from today and throughout the summer on channel 2. The television series, along with the Nerja caves, is very much what makes Nerja stand out as a place to visit amongst Spanish tourists, with areas of the town still clearly recognisable from episodes of the program and the centrepiece fishing vessel, La Dorada, on display overlooking the Parque Verano Azul on the western side of the town.
Local beaches receive awards - 27th Jun 2014
Three of Nerja's most frequented beaches (Burriana, La Torrecilla and El Chucho) have been presented with Q for quality awards by the Spanish Institute for Quality Tourism (ICTE) with four more going to other related services in the town. The awards, which recognise improvements to tourism services, are the result of the town halls continued commitment to improving Nerja's tourism offering, particularly when it comes to the municipalities beaches. With a total of seven awards no other town on the Costa del Sol has performed better with only Marbella equalling Nerja this year.
San Juan beach cleanup - 26th Jun 2014
According to Nieves Atencia, local councillor with responsibility for beaches, hundreds of nails have been recovered from El Playazo beach following the San Juan festival celebrations. The nails, which likely come from wooden pallets burnt on the customary bonfires, have been recovered by the municipality's beach cleaning services, lifeguards and even local residents. The councillor, clearly frustrated by the discoveries and the resulting safety hazard, reiterated that the burning of wood containing nails is prohibited under the official guidelines for the event and described the behaviour of those who ignored such simple rules as "anti-social" and "irresponsible".
San Juan celebrations end - 24th Jun 2014
Once again the official San Juan festival events drew people to Burriana beach with the now customary large crowds enjoying the music, drink, food and fireworks. Many people took part in the popular custom of washing themselves in the sea whilst others were content just to throw their written wish lists onto the fires. Sandra Jimena, councillor for popular traditions in Nerja, thanked everybody for coming before initiating the fireworks display and lighting the main bonfire.
Local girls mighty medal haul - 23rd Jun 2014
The 29th Andalusian juniors (AlevÃn) swimming championship took place in Cadiz last weekend and brought notable success for local girl Lourdes Herrero who was the stand out competitor winning three gold's and a silver across various distances. The annual event which this year included some 67 clubs from across the region with over 450 individual competitors is a stepping stone for the best competitors before the national championship which takes place in July, this year in Badajoz. With such success at the regional level hopes are high that Lourdes can put in another great performance in Badajoz and stand out amongst some of Spain's best swimmers.
No funds for medical centre - 20th Jun 2014
In a meeting held in Malaga yesterday, regional councillor Daniel Pérez made it clear that the Junta de Andalucia has no money available for Nerja's new health centre bringing the long standing project to a halt once again. In the meeting, which the Nerja town hall applied for some 18 months ago, Nerja's mayor, José Alberto Armijo, highlighted the need for a new health centre and the local council's willingness to loan the necessary money to the Junta in order to keep the project rolling forwards until they are in a position to fulfil their obligations. The offer to the Junta will be officially made following the passing of a motion in the next local council meeting.
Nerja caves receives Tripadvisor award - 19th Jun 2014
Following an impressive 97% of positive visitor reviews the Nerja Caves has received a 2014 certificate of excellence from the well-known travel website Tripadvisor.com. The president of the Nerja Caves foundation, Jorge Hernández Mollar, explained how the positive feedback was very much valued by the foundation as evidence that its continued efforts to improve visitor satisfaction are working. The foundation has taken a variety of steps in recent years, with website improvements, promotional videos and the addition of the natural history museum located in the centre of Nerja. He added that the award would serve to encourage the foundation to continue its efforts to improve the visitor experience.
Night of San Juan approaches - 18th Jun 2014
Once again Burriana beach will be at the centre of the San Juan celebrations with the traditional verbena (live music), bonfire and fireworks taking place from 10pm on the evening of the 23rd. Camping is permitted on both Burriana and Playazo beaches although the town hall would like to remind people that basic rules are in place for campers to ensure as few problems as possible. Project approved to improved Nerja's oldest streets - 17th Jun 2014
In a recent local council meeting a new project has been approved to further improve some of the oldest streets in Nerja. According to local councillor with responsibility for the town's infrastructure, Antonio GarcÃa, Calles Pintada, Animas and Cristo will undergo further improvements according to plans drawn up by town hall officials. The works are part of the regional councils "Assistance & Cooperation" plan and are expected to cost in the region of €100,000.
Pressure builds on Junta de Andalucia - 16th Jun 2014
Nerja's mayor, José Alberto Armijo, held a meeting last Friday with representatives from regional political organizations in order to present a united front against the perceived obstructive attitude of the current Junta de Andalucia administration. Presidents of the Partido Popular Andaluz, the PP Malagueño and the Malaga provincial council came to Nerja to demand that the Junta stop blocking numerous important projects related to the town, many of which have long since been agreed upon and planned for. Amongst the projects highlighted were the new health centre, fire station and the proposed leisure port, which have turned into long running political sagas often leaving the projects in a state of complete paralysis.
