Greener lighting for La Torrecilla - 13th Jun 2014
The 43 streetlights in the area of La Torrecilla beach are to be substituted for energy saving alternatives according to Councillor Nieves Atencia. The project which has already received approval from the town hall will not only improve the overall aesthetics of the area but will also result in an energy saving with the new lights requiring approximately half of the energy that the currently installed models do. The move is in line with other such projects being carried out on other beaches in Nerja and neighbouring towns.
Jesús Reyna exhibition - 12th Jun 2014
The architect and artist Jesús Reyna is now exhibiting his second collection in Nerja until the 29th of June in the exhibition hall in Calle Cristo. The group of etchings, entitled "Coloured Fruits", are colourful and dramatic, dominating the white walls of the hall in a figurative colour showdown. Anybody wishing to go and take a look can do so morning and afternoon from 11am until 1pm and from 7pm until 10pm.
Roundabouts receive tidy up - 11th Jun 2014
Work has begun on the towns eastern roundabouts in the last few days, giving them a sprucing up before the new holiday season begins. Local councillor with responsibility for municipal green spaces, Nieves Atencia, highlighted the importance of these areas, being as they are, one of the first impressions visitors get upon coming to Nerja. In a program set to continue to other green spaces in the town over the coming weeks the roundabouts palm trees were pruned and tidied, new plants were bedded in, measures were taken to prevent weed growth and a covering of white gravel put in place.
Volleyball double wins bronze - 9th Jun 2014
Last weekend brought yet more action for the towns volleyball teams with the deciding matches of the Andalusian beach volleyball championship taking place in Puerto de Santa MarÃa, Cadiz. Following successful qualification in the local heats held in Nerja the weekend previous, two Nerja teams travelled to Cadiz ready to test themselves against some of the best doubles teams in Andalusia. In a tight competition the Muñoz - Armijo team who previously won their heat in Nerja progressed to the final stages of the competition eventually winning bronze after a series of hard fought matches. This year's competition stands out as a great success for the town's municipal volleyball school and for the two team's trainer known locally as Jimmy.
Torrecilla's botanical garden - 6th Jun 2014
Provincial councillor for Malaga, Marina Bravo, has indicated that the proposed botanical garden in the area of La Torrecilla beach is a project which has attracted significant interest in the provincial council following the completion of its planning stage. The councillor recently visited Nerja and looked over the area where the proposed garden would be situated which is currently rather scruffy despite being located near to one of the town's most popular beaches. Nieves Atencia, local town councillor for environmental matters, described the project as something new and original on the Costa del Sol which would improve the town for tourists as well as residents.
Burriana walkways - 5th Jun 2014
Anybody visiting Burriana beach in recent days will have seen work underway to replace the existing wooden walkways over the sand with new concrete paths. According to Nieves Atencia, councillor with responsibility for beaches, up to half a kilometre of the new, wider walkways are being installed with similar improvements planned for La Torrecilla beach. The concrete paths do not require the same degree of maintenance as the previous wooden versions meaning going forward funding can be spent on general improvements rather than maintenance.
Town hall petitions Junta - 4th Jun 2014
Once again the town hall is chasing the Junta de Andalucia concerning the unauthorised rubbish tip in the area known as "El Barranco del Viejo" on the Nerja - Frigiliana border. The land, which falls under the Junta's umbrella of responsibility, has been a recurring issue between the two institutions with the town hall repeatedly asking the Junta to clear up the area and take measures to prevent its continued use and deterioration.
More sporting titles come to Nerja - 3rd Jun 2014
As well as the recent success of the towns volleyball teams Nerja's roller hockey and swimming teams also enjoyed a successful weekend. Following a number of fiercely contested matches held in Nerja, the men's senior team were declared the winners of this year's Andalusian roller hockey cup whilst the juniors of the municipal swimming school left the 8th provincial winter swimming tournament held in AlhaurÃn el Grande with a clutch of medals across various age groups and categories.
Weekend volleyball success - 2nd Jun 2014
Last weekend some of the provinces best junior volleyball players were competing in Nerja in the regions beach doubles tournament. Thirty nine female teams and fifteen male teams took part in the competition held on Burriana beach with success for the hosting town coming thanks to the Amijo-Muñoz female team who won the overall women's competition. The victory means that they qualify to compete in the full Andalusian championship to be held in Cadiz next weekend.
Maro beach readied for summer - 30th May 2014
Councillor Nieves Atencia, who has responsibility for the municipalities beaches, announced today that various improvements are to be carried out on Maro beach in preparation for the coming season. As well as a general clean up and cutting back of vegetation in the area there will be improvements to the showers installed at the beach and two new temporary wooden buildings are to be put in place to store kayaking equipment and sunbeds. The buildings are in-keeping with similar structures already located in the area and will not take up any usable space for sunbathers on what is one of Nerja's most famous beaches.
Cultural Centre Exhibition - 29th May 2014
Those with an interest in photography might like to pass by the Nerja Cultural Centre in coming weeks to take a look at the new exhibition of images organised by Nerja's photography club. The collection, which will be on display until the 31st of June, is entitled "Cottidiane" and is made up of photographs by José Antonio Jimena, otherwise known as Malthius. The club describes the collection as a group of images that cause "reflection on the longevity of human relationships and the individuals interaction with a wider society that takes pleasure in consumerism". The clubs final exhibition of the season will be open to visitors every weekday morning from 10am until 2pm.
Caves book launch - 28th May 2014
This morning a new book entitled "La Cueva para Todos" (The Caves for Everyone) was presented in the town hall by Luis Santiago to councillor Gema Garcia. The 48 page book aims to make information about Nerja's famous caves available to the public in a digestible and light hearted way, cutting through the more complicated explanations of the caves formation to provide basic information to visitors and residents of Nerja. The book, which has been written and illustrated by local painter and artist Luis Santiago, is available in both Spanish and English versions and can be purchased from the caves and museum gift shops at a cost of €10.
