The indoor football championship of Andalusia and the athletics championship of Andalusia, both for juveniles, will bring sports people of both regional and national levels to the town in what is becoming an increasingly regular occurrence in Nerja. Local councillors have highlighted such events for their importance not only on a sporting level but also as a new avenue for out of town spectators to discover Nerja as a holiday destination.

Councillor thanks weekend performers - 19th May 2014
Gema Garcia, Nerja's councillor for education and culture, has thanked all the artists and performers that took place in this year's edition of the Noche en Blanco. It was remarked that the event had a good balance of activities and performances where local groups in particular demonstrated their talents with the help of many volunteer organisers. A particularly popular aspect of the program was that of the Nerja de Ayer exhibition in the Sala Mercado, which brings together a collection of photos documenting the towns past. The photos, provided by residents from Nerja, will remain open to visitors until the 31st of May both mornings and evenings.
San Isidro draws the crowds - 16th May 2014
Yesterday saw another highly successful San Isidro procession in Nerja with an estimated 3,500 people taking part in the event. Local police councillor, José Miguel GarcÃa, remarked on how incident free the event was with only minimal support required from the local authorities. Incidents were limited to cuts and grazes resulting from the odd fall and the inevitable instances of party goers having a little too much to drink. The verbena at the caves was also very well attended with the bus service to and from the town transporting an estimated 3,000 people and the taxis some 300 or so more. You can take a look at our photos from the event on our San Isidro Pinterest board here.
New rules mean no blue flags this year - 14th May 2014
The ADEAC association which each year judges which beaches are worthy of blue flag status in Spain has made changes to its rules meaning that it is now impossible for Nerja to be awarded any blue flags this year. The rule change, which now requires local waste water to be treated instead of the previous recommendation that this be the case, has been met with some frustration by local councillors remarking that it is "paradoxical" that this should happen in the year that work finally begins on Nerja's long awaited water treatment plant. Nieves Atencia, councillor with responsibility for beaches, assured residents and visitors that the change does not mean any worsening in quality on the municipality's beaches and that thanks to local initiatives they will be cleaner and better maintained than ever.
