Camera Club exhibition - 6th May 2014

The Costa Camera Club has a new exhibition open in the Calle Cristo municipal hall of both amateur and professional photos taken by its members, mainly foreign residents. The collection is made up of images of varying themes and styles with the standout image being that of a dolphin leaping in front of the Balcon de Europa. The exhibition is open both mornings and evenings from 11am until 1pm and from 7pm until 10pm until the 14th of May.

Nerja athletics club enjoys international success - 5th May 2014

The international speed walking championship held in China brought unexpected success for Nerja's local athletics club with two of its junior members, who had already been selected to represent Spain, finishing in the top 20. María Pérez and Pablo Oliva finished in 9th and 15th places respectively with María setting a new personal best over the 10km course. The Spanish team did exceptionally well in general reaching second place in the overall standings beaten only by the Chinese who dominated the event.

Nerja proves increasingly popular for athletes - 2nd May 2014

Local councillor for sport, Antonio García, has drawn attention to the success that Nerja is having in attracting northern European athletes to the town as part of the 'Tourism and Sport' initiative that began four years ago. The program, which aims to bring more visitors to Nerja in out of season months, has proven so popular that sports facilities such as those at the Enrique López Cuenca stadium have been forced to open even on festival days. Since before Easter the numbers of high level athletes making use of the facilities has increased and it is expected that approximately 1000 will have chosen Nerja as a training destination before the end of the season.

International dance day - 30th Apr 2014

Yesterday brought two dance performances in Nerja from local groups as part of International Dance Day. The Balcon de Europa was the location for a show from the municipal music and dance school with pupils taking to the square to entertain onlookers with performances of various pieces while later on in the day the Fernando Hurtado dance company performed the popular show 'Charlie' in the Nerja cultural centre.

Dia de la Cruz approaches - 29th Apr 2014

This Saturday the annual tradition of 'May Crosses', popular all over Spain and South America, will come to Nerja with 12 decorated crosses being put on display in the town according to Sandra Jimena, local councillor for popular traditions. There will be displays in Calles Pintada, Diputacion and on the Balcon de Europa, as well as two in the neighbouring village of Maro in Calle San Miguel. Sun shines on Residents Day - 28th Apr 2014

The 15th annual Residents day fair went off without a hitch yesterday in Plaza de España, with clear and sunny skies providing a perfect day for the 40 something groups and associations to showcase their activities. The square was turned into a hive of activity with a mix of food, music and dancing from numerous different cultures on display. As part of the official acts the foreign department of the town hall was recognised for its continuing service to international residents throughout the year as was the Costa Animal Society for their work to care and find new homes for abandoned animals.

Work begins on helicopter pad - 25th Apr 2014

The construction of Nerja's new helipad, which will be used by the public company 'Emergencias de Andalucía', has begun this week. Diggers moved onto the plot of land close to the current health centre, overlooking the Burriana beach roundabout to begin preparing the ground for the EU funded project which will provide a permanent facility for emergency medical helicopters to land in the town. Currently these helicopters use the football pitch at the nearby sports stadium however the new dedicated facility will provide a better service to residents and visitors to Nerja in the event of critical medical emergencies.

New exhibition opens at museum - 24th Apr 2014

A new art exhibition was opened last night in the hall for temporary exhibitions in the Nerja museum. The collection, which is open to the public until the 15th of June, is by the artist Eugenio Chicano and is comprised of 19 acrylic images, the primary focus of which are the many watchtowers which can be found along the Axarquian coast. The exhibition entitled 'Torres almenaras de la Axarquía' includes five images of towers within the municipality of Nerja with only the ruined tower at La Torrecilla beach not getting included.

Athletics tournament this weekend - 22nd Apr 2014

This weekend the town will be playing host to the regional athletics championship for juniors with the nine best clubs of the area coming together to compete at Nerja's Enrique López Cuenca stadium. From 5pm on Saturday afternoon clubs from Malaga, Motril and Jaen amongst others will battle it out in various categories with competitions continuing until 9:15pm. Councillor for sport, Antonio García, has encouraged residents to attend to cheer on Nerja's team which is one of those taking part.

Bumper Easter for Nerja - 21st Apr 2014

Nerja enjoyed a highly successful Semana Santa last week with various sources showing a marked improvement on figures from last year. Hotel occupancy was up by 10% from the previous year with 95% of rooms in the municipality being used by visitors over the period. The Nerja Caves also recorded a significant increase in visitor numbers with more than 8,600 individuals taking a stroll through the caverns, over 2000 more than the same time last year. Despite the increased numbers of people local councillor, José Miguel García, highlighted the lack of incidents requiring police attention during the week with the majority of calls taken by the authorities in relation to procession times and parking.

Nerja's Easter clean-up - 18th Apr 2014

Residents and visitors to Nerja should expect some of the streets along the routes of the various Easter parades to be temporarily closed in the days following the processions to allow the towns public cleaning services a chance to remove the leftover candle wax. This year a new product is being used to hopefully remove the wax droplets and will be applied on the Balcon de Europa and calles Carmen, Pintada and Puerta del Mar.

Buoys deployed in preparation for summer - 17th Apr 2014

From yesterday work has begun deploying buoys from Maro to El Playazo beaches in preparation for the summer season. The work, which will be finished today, follows the same configuration as last year with six nautical channels available with three on Burriana beach and one each on El Playazo, Torrecilla and Maro beaches. The buoys, which will remain in place until the end of the summer, mark channels segregating swimmers from water vehicles such as boats, jet-skis and kayaks.
