Spring party in Tutti Frutti - 16th Apr 2014
Sandra Jimena, local councillor with responsibility for youth affairs, has announced plans for this year's spring party which will take place in Plaza Tutti Frutti from 1pm on the 26th of April. The fiesta, which has been organised by the pubs and bars of the area in conjunction with the town hall, will begin with performances by various local groups with a DJ taking over as the party continues. There'll be free paella for all that attend as well as competitively priced drinks.
Work nears completion on new fire station access - 15th Apr 2014
Officials from the Malaga provincial council have visited Nerja today to inspect the access road to the new fire-station station which is now nearing completion. The group, which was accompanied by the Mayor of Nerja, visited the area to see for themselves the short section of road which in recent months has become a highly political subject with the Junta de Andalucia apparently refusing to partially fund the project as it had agreed to during the planning and administrative stages. The project was finally started thanks to intervention by the provincial council who provided the outstanding monies to complete the €164,000 works.
N340 improvements get go ahead - 14th Apr 2014
Antonio Garcia, councillor for infrastructure in Nerja, has announced that the re-surfacing of the old N340 coastal road from the Punta Lara roundabout to the roundabout connecting the coastal and Frigiliana roads will be approved in a council meeting this week. The €120,000 project will also include improvements to road signs and general maintenance of the roads fringes and is expected to take four days to be completed. It is hoped that the work can begin by mid-May.
Nerja receives new investment - 12th Apr 2014
The mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, has today announced that the town is set to receive approximately €347,000 as part of a regional initiative to stimulate business and create jobs. The 'Productive Investment' plan which is being implemented by the Malaga authorities will distribute funds amongst all the municipalities of the region with the amount broadly being linked to population. The town hall must now present financially sustainable projects to the Malaga regional council for approval before any funds can be released.
Local children visit Picasso Museum - 10th Apr 2014
This week a group of 18 local school children visited the Picasso museum in Málaga as part of a joint initiative between the town hall's youth department, the regional council of Málaga and the La Caixa social foundation. They were given a unique tour of the works by one of the museums guides to emphasize the artist's use of perspective and Cubism. A Place in the Sun returns to film in Nerja - 9th Apr 2014
The British Channel 4 television program 'A Place in the Sun' will once again be visiting Nerja next week just six months after their last visit to the town. The program, which consists of British people looking to purchase property in foreign countries, is now in its eighth season and is regularly watched by large audiences in the UK. As well as hunting for property the program also gives general information on the attractions in the area they're visiting and on this occasion will be visiting Nerja during the towns Semana Santa celebrations.
Tennis tournament this weekend - 8th Apr 2014
This weekend will see Nerja's annual tennis tournament get under way once again at the municipal tennis courts near to the health centre on Avenida de Pescia. The competition,organised by the sports department of the town hall, will begin on Friday and continue throughout the weekend until Sunday with pairs playing a maximum of three sets.
Maro waterfall receives regional recognition - 7th Apr 2014
The waterfall near Maro that cascades directly into the sea between La Caleta and Maro beaches has been singled out by the Tourism and Promotion teams from Malaga's regional council as one of 31 'Special Corners' of the province. These locations spread throughout Malaga have been chosen for their special historic, cultural and environmental interest as well as their general beauty. This list is just part of a larger initiative aimed at highlighting the tourist offering to be found in the region, which also recommends local fiestas and establishments which visitors may find quirky and interesting.
Municipal band in concert this Sunday - 4th Apr 2014
As part of the lead up to the Easter celebrations the Municipal band will be performing a collection of sacred music as part of a concert on Sunday from midday at the Nerja Cultural Centre. If you're interested and would like to attend, entrance will cost €6 with tickets available from the centre' s box office.
Maro infrastructure works begin - 3rd Apr 2014
Maro is currently undergoing something of an infrastructure bonanza with work already well underway on Calle Carmen now being added to by underground waste water piping improvements on the road to La Caleta beach and work on a new pavement on the Maro beach road beginning next week. The two newly starting projects will cost €48,000 and €49,000 respectively with the sewage improvements expected to be finished before the Easter period.
Preparations begin for San Isidro procession - 2nd Apr 2014
This week Sandra Jimena, local councillor for popular traditions, has announced that those individuals and associations wishing to take part in the San Isidro procession on the 15th of May with carts or trailers or those local businesses wishing to operate temporary bars and food outlets can now make their applications up until the 2nd of May in the town hall. Also, anybody interested in taking part in the May Crosses competitions can now register their involvement until the 25th of April.
La Torrecilla beach tower once again on the agenda - 1st Apr 2014
A group of local and regional officials have visited the ruined watchtower overlooking La Torrecilla beach today, taking the initial steps towards the creation of a new commission to oversee a series of studies into the former defensive structure. A three stage process is expected to be undertaken involving an archeological investigation of the foundations, a study on how to best preserve the remains whilst keeping the area safe and how best to deliver information to visitors on the history of the tower and its environment.
