Brotherhood houses officially opened - 31st Mar 2014

The mayor of Nerja, along with senior figures from the town's religious brotherhoods, has inaugurated today the new premises to be used by two of Nerja's Catholic organizations. The new buildings, specifically designed for purpose and located in Calle Puente Viejo near to La Ermita, have been a long term project which has taken years to reach completion and now offer a suitably dignified home for such important organizations. The buildings were blessed by Andrés Pérez, Priest at El Salvador church, in a ceremony attended by various local councillors with music from the town’s municipal band.

Cliff lights take a step closer - 28th Mar 2014

Work will begin next week on the earlier reported Calahonda beach improvements which will include the installation of new lighting covering the beach itself and cliffs behind at night. The town hall has now awarded the contract to a local company at a cost of €89,664 with approximately €8,000 of maintenance and improvements to existing infrastructure being included into the agreement. The project means that one of Nerja's most popular areas for residents and visitors can be enjoyed both in the day and evenings.

School trip hailed a success - 27th Mar 2014

Antonio Garcia, local councillor for sport, has described the recent visit by students of the municipal football school to La Rosaleda stadium in Málaga as a great success. Some 490 participants went, most of which were children, to see a match between Málaga and Espanyol last week. He said that the school intends to work with Málaga FC to continue organising visits with eyes currently set on the coming match between Málaga and Granada.

Nerja's new public space - 26th Mar 2014

Nerja's local councillor for urban planning, Nieves Atencia, has made clear that in the coming local government meeting the final approval will be given for an unused plot of land in Calle Animas to be opened for public use. The plot, which measures approximately 700m2 and was formerly a mechanics workshop, is located near to the Nerja Museum and has been earmarked for cultural usage. The approval will mark the end of the public process surrounding the plot however negotiations are still ongoing with the land owner to reach a mutually acceptable agreement.

Easter draws closer - 24th Mar 2014

There has been a flurry of Easter activity in the past few days here in Nerja with the towns various brotherhoods coming to public view once again as part of their Easter preparations. Easter posters have already been unveiled in a number of ceremonies and last Sunday saw the procession of two figures of Christ leave the church of El Salvador on the Balcon de Europa to the brotherhood buildings in calle Puente Viejo. The statues were accompanied by the municipal band of cornets and drums in a low key procession which still attracted Nerja's Catholic faithful.

Polish interest in Nerja - 22nd Mar 2014

The Polish magazine "Prestiz" in its last edition dedicated a report on Nerja covering some ten pages of the publication, highlighting just how far and wide Nerja's reach seems to be becoming as a popular tourist destination. The magazine which was ten years old last year covers subjects of general interest such as politics, economics and culture. With such coverage in Poland maybe we'll see greater numbers of Polish visitors this year, adding to Nerja's already highly international visitor statistics.

More diplomas for Nerja's Protección Civil - 21st Mar 2014

Today local councillor Inocencia Quintero presented volunteers of Nerja's civil protection force diplomas for further training undertaken throughout the winter months. The group which are now qualified in basic vital support, vertical rescue techniques and semi-automatic defibrillation received their certificates in a short ceremony at the town hall. The councillor thanked the volunteers for their continuing commitment to the organisation and highlighted the vital role they play throughout the year in emergency situations as well as during the towns many events. This is the second such occasion that diplomas have been awarded to local volunteers with a larger group receiving theirs late last month.

€1,600 for Nerja's Taller de la Amistad - 20th Mar 2014

The Norwegian painter Otto Solli, who recently exhibited some of his paintings in Nerja's Calle Cristo municipal hall, has delivered €1,600 to the local charity Taller de la Amistad which supports the mentally handicapped. The donation comes from the proceeds of sales made during his exhibition and is the second time the artist has made such a gesture.

Sign up for Residents day 2014 begins - 18th Mar 2014

Some 40 local associations have signed up for this year's resident's day event so far, already surpassing last year's total of 33, with the registration period still open. The event will take place on the 27th of April in Plaza de España in front of the Nerja Museum and will include a stage with performances from midday as well as eight separate bars offering international food and drink. Should the event fall victim to bad weather the backup date has been set to the 4th of May.

"Noche en Blanco" in Nerja - 17th Mar 2014

The preparation for this year's Noche en Blanco, to be held on the 17th of May, is now underway with Gema García, councillor for education and culture in Nerja, announcing the beginning of the competition to produce a poster for the event. Entrants have until April 21st to submit their posters with one being chosen by the town hall to be used in the events promotion. This is the 3rd time that Nerja has held a Noche en Blanco, an event which sees musical and theatrical performances held all over the town for one action packed evening of entertainment.

Flyboard comes to Nerja this summer - 14th Mar 2014

Water sports and extreme sports enthusiasts may like to know that Flyboard, where participants 'fly' on a water-jet powered board, will be coming to Nerja this summer. The news came as part of an announcement from Nieves Atencia, local councillor with responsibility for beaches, regarding the annual granting of licenses for water sports and sunbeds operated on Nerja's beaches. Anybody fancying a go at the new sport will be able to do so this summer on El Playazo beach.

Nerja caves seminar - 13th Mar 2014

This week the Nerja caves have played host to a scientific seminar attended by representatives of the caves foundation as well as numerous archaeological investigators, where the subject has been the continued exploration and conservation of the popular tourist attraction. The meeting, which took place over Tuesday and Wednesday, dealt predominantly with the drafting of a new development plan to cover the 2015 - 2020 period, more specifically dealing with the allocation of resources as well as the continuing promotion of the caves as a visitor attraction. The seminar was inspired by the caves application for UNESCO World Heritage site status which is currently being considered.
