Local police officer detained - 12th Mar 2014
This morning Guardia Civil officers from Malaga detained a local police officer in relation to a variety of serious offences. Although information is scarce, it's thought the allegations include bribery, money laundering and working with criminal gangs. A town hall spokesperson said that once the situation is clarified, local government will take any necessary steps as laid out by the courts.
Busy weekend for the caves - 11th Mar 2014
Last weekend was a busy one for the Caves with a visit by 105 women from Huércal de AlmerÃa. The daytrip was organised by their local town hall to coincide with International Women's day and included lunch at the caves restaurant, a visit to the natural history museum and a tour around the most enigmatic areas of the town.
400 people walk for equality - 10th Mar 2014
The final event in the program marking International Women's day took place on Sunday, with Nerja's 4th trek for equality. The course, which was around 3km long, was walked by around 400 people, 50 more than the previous year's event. People of all ages took part in the hour long walk around the town with many participants bringing food to be donated to Cáritas, a charity dedicated to supporting the poor.
Musical weekend ahead - 6th Mar 2014
This weekend promises to be a musically rich one in Nerja with the singer Jolis performing a selection of songs by classic French singers at the culture centre on Friday night and a concert by a local quartet of Baroque music in one of Nerja's most beautiful locations, La Ermita de la Angustias, on Saturday night. Local beaches receive new walkways - 5th Mar 2014
Nieves Atencia, local councillor with responsibility for beaches, announced this week that the provision of new walkways on Nerja's beaches has been approved by local government. The walkways, currently made of wood which lead from the paved Paseo Maritimo to the waterfront, deteriorate quickly due to the elements and will be replaced in time for this year's summer season with a more durable alternative. Burriana and Torrecilla, Nerja's Blue Flag beaches, will be the first to benefit from the decision.
Maro Carnival still to come - 4th Mar 2014
With the build-up and excitement surrounding Nerja's carnival last weekend it would be easy to overlook the neighbouring village of Maro's similar event this coming Saturday. Activities will start from 2:30pm with food provided by the Nerja Caves restaurant and a temporary bar in the village square with proceeds going to local children's associations. The main carnival procession will begin at 5:30pm with various singers and local groups following on providing music and entertainment well into the evening.
New art exhibition - 3rd Mar 2014
Art lovers in Nerja may like to know that the Norwegian painter Otto Jan Solli now has a new exhibition open in the Calle Cristo municipal hall until the 18th of March. Otto, who uses oils, watercolours and various graphical techniques to produce his paintings, has what's been described as an experimental and curious style and has pledged to donate any proceeds from sales to Nerja's Taller de la Amistad, an organisation that supports the mentally handicapped.
2201 take part in Dia del Pedal - 1st Mar 2014
Despite a busy weekend in Nerja with both Carnival and a regional volleyball tournament taking place in the town, over 2000 people turned out to take part in this year's Dia del Pedal. Unfortunately last year's record number of participants was not bettered however the event did take on somewhat of a carnival theme with many participants taking part in colourful costumes. Councillor for sport, Antonio GarcÃa, thanked everybody for supporting Nerja's 16th Dia del Pedal and the organisers, who make it such a continuing success.
Dia de Andalucia - 28th Feb 2014
Today marks Andalucia day with the majority of official acts taking place in La Barriada de las Protegidas from midday. Children will read passages from Andalusias statue of autonomy with music provided by the municipal band. If you'd like to know more about Andalusia day take a look at our page here.
Regional volleyball tournament comes to Nerja - 27th Feb 2014
This weekend will see the Andalucian provincial volleyball championship take place in Nerja starting on February 27th. Volleyball players from all over the region will be in town as part of their provinces selection with three local Nerja players selected for the Malaga team. The tournament is for 'Cadetes' or juvenile players and will take place at the sports hall near to the health centre. The finals will be held on the 2nd of March and entrance to matches is free.
Court rejects Larios company's claim - 26th Feb 2014
A Malaga court has ruled against the Larios company regarding its claim that the access road to the location of the new fire station in Nerja is on land owned by it. The company had sought to halt works on the road which has been a political hot potato in recent months however the court ruled that the disputed land was in fact publicly owned as decided by the provincial council of Malaga in 2012.
New cycle path approved - 24th Feb 2014
It was announced this week that Nerja's proposed new cycle path to Maro was approved by the provincial council of Malaga as part of its 'Ciudad Amable' program. The project, which was presented to the councils office of development and housing back in October, is one of five such projects to be approved under the scheme and the only one in the Axarquia region. Antonio GarcÃa, Nerja councillor for Infrastructure, remarked that the town hall would work closely with the provincial council to develop the project.
