Nerja gets a helipad - 5th Feb 2014

In the latest local government meeting in Nerja all political parties agreed upon the proposal to construct a new helipad for use by the public company Emergencias Sanitarias de Andalucía which provides emergency health assistance across the region. The plot of land assigned to the project is located just a short distance from the current health centre and means that emergency helicopters will no longer have to use the sports stadiums football pitch on the northern side of the town.

Hispano Nórdica association provide new petanca courts - 4th Feb 2014

The town hall and the Hispano Nórdica association have come to an agreement over two new petanca courts near to the sports stadium on the N340. The area already has a number of courts and is well used by local residents, particularly on weekends, and is proving increasingly popular amongst Nordic residents. Local councillor Inocencia Quintero added however that although these new facilities are provided at the petition of the Nordic community they will be located on public land and are free for everybody to use.

El Playazo development in Town Halls sights - 3rd Feb 2014

Later this week local government will be looking to take the next step in the proposed re-development of El Playazo beach, or more specifically the development of the approximate million metres squared strip of land that runs behind it. The town hall is looking to reclassify the land as suitable for urban use which requires an enquiry to do so. Although the motion is unlikely to gain cross party support it is expected to be given the go ahead due to the projects importance for Nerja's future as the tourist hub of the Axarquia region, bringing new hotels, leisure facilities and promenade at an estimated cost of €2.5 million.

Nerja, popular rental destination in 2013 - 30th Jan 2014

New figures release by vacaciones-espana.es have indicated that in 2013 Nerja was one of the principal tourist destinations for rentals over hotel stays in the whole of Spain, showing a 13% rise on the previous year's rental activities. Renting proved to be as popular with Spanish tourists as it was with international visitors with the British accounting for the highest proportion of overseas tenants.

Carnival poster unveiled - 29th Jan 2014

Sandra Jimena, councillor for popular traditions in Nerja, has presented the promotional poster for the Nerja Carnival 2014 alongside Miguel Carlos Bueno, its creator. The poster is as colourful and flamboyant as the carnival itself as was described as 'spectacular' by the councillor. The Nerja Carnival is set to begin on the 27th of February. New lighting approved - 28th Jan 2014

Nerja's mayor, José Alberto Armijo, has announced a local government agreement to improve the lighting on La Calahonda beach and Balcon de Europa. The plan is to install new LED lighting to compliment that which is already in place, illuminating the beach itself as well as the walls of the Balcon and enhancing the appeal of these areas to the public. The installation should be completed before the summer months and is expected to cost in the region of €90,000.

Nerja enjoys successful FITUR tourism fair - 27th Jan 2014

Bernardo Pozuelo, local councillor for tourism, has remarked on the positive balance that Nerja achieved at this year's International Tourism Fair in Madrid. Nerja shared a stall with the Nerja Caves Foundation and throughout the course of the event presented to tourism professionals from around the world many of the town's unique charms which proove so popular with existing visitors. There was a significant increase in interest this year, partly thanks to a larger stall than Nerja has previously had and also due to the high involvement from local businesses. Hopefully the positive nature of this year's fair will lead to improved worldwide tourism industry contacts for Nerja and a successful summer season.

Nerja begins Carnival preparations - 25th Jan 2014

This year's Nerja carnival which begins on February 27th is starting to take shape with preparations well underway. Bids for temporary bars and stalls are now ready to be accepted and competitions for the municipality's children surrounding the events are reaching eager ears, as is talk of the prizes!! The carnival, which is now in its 30th year and recently received recognition for its success, was also presented to visitors of the FITUR tourism fair in Madrid as part of the towns ever improving marketing to attract more visitors from and ever expanding geographical circle. Nerja Caves festival 2014 presented at FITUR - 23rd Jan 2014

The program for this year's music and dance festival which will take place from the 19th to the 26th of July was presented today at the tourism fair in Madrid by some of the principle artists in this year's line-up. Internationally known performers such as Carmen Linares, Diana Navarro and Nuria Fergó alongside the mayor of Nerja presented the largest number of performances ever to be included in the annual caves festival, which are split between the caves and Balcón de Europa. Unofficial rubbish dump under spotlight - 22nd Jan 2014

A motion presented by Nerja's councillor for the environment, Nieves Atencia, concerning the illegal rubbish dump in the "El Barranco de El Viejo" area between Nerja and Frigiliana received cross party support in a recent local government meeting. The motion, which looks to both national and regional authorities seeks to get the area cleared of the illegally dumped rubbish and take the necessary measures to prevent the situation returning in the future. One of the issues that requires clarification is to which administration the problem falls to seeing as the area in question is on the border between the municipalities of Nerja and Frigiliana.

Mayor defends Golf course project - 21st Jan 2014

The mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, has once again highlighted the highly irregular way in which the Junta de Andalucia has dealt with the long proposed golf and leisure complex in Nerja over the past ten years which has recently been clarified thanks to a high court ruling. At a recent Malaga council meeting he spoke about how the project, which he recently characterised as "more viable than ever", should be developed with all the urban and environmental guarantees laid out by the regions development plan. This is just one issue however in an increasingly political relationship between the Junta de Andalucia and Nerja's current administration.

Caves foundation launches new video - 20th Jan 2014

The Nerja Caves foundation has commissioned a new video shot in the caves as part of its program to mark the 55th anniversary of their re-discovery. The video, which is approximately three minutes long, is called "Nerja Caves – Where Time Stood Still" and is available to watch here. The video produced with both Spanish and English speakers in mind uses the spectacular caves as a back drop for a modern dance performance to simple classical music. It was first viewed in the Nerja Museum by Angel Ruiz, manager of the caves foundation, along with the film makers in an act where Ruiz explained that the films purpose is to convey "what one feels when visiting the caves".
