Vuelta de Andalucia comes to Nerja - 21st Feb 2014
The annual bicycle race the Vuelta de Andalucia began in Almeria on Wednesday and although not officially passing through Nerja many of the teams chose the town and neighbouring village of Maro to prepare for the first day long stage which began from Velez Malaga yesterday. The hotels in the area were invaded overnight by the events participants with the teams support vehicles and mobile workshops similarly taking over hotel car parks. Alejandro Valverde won the stage to Jaen as well as the previous days prologue.
Civil protection officers - 20th Feb 2014
Local councillor Inocencia Quintero has delivered diplomas to volunteers of the civil protection force in Nerja this week in recognition of further training undertaken over the winter months. The members of the force undertook three courses which included initial vital medical support and use of the defibrillator, emergency planning and crowd control. The councillor highlighted the town halls policy of providing the best training possible for the civil protection force and thanked the volunteers for their continuing commitment.
Shop window competition to coincide with carnival - 19th Feb 2014
The town halls office for popular traditions has launched a competition for local businesses that coincides with the approaching Nerja Carnival. Local shops can decorate their windows and premises in a style related to the Carnival with no limits on materials or size of the display, hopefully extending the colour and vibrancy of this yearly event even further. First prize is a weekend stay in the Hotel Paraiso del Mar with the second a meal in the Parador de Nerja.
Town centre gets extra shade this summer - 18th Feb 2014
This summer the centre of Nerja promises to be a little cooler thanks to plans announced by local councillor Nieves Atencia to install sun blinds throughout the commercial areas of the town. Following the granting of funds from the Junta de Andalusia's Tourism and Commerce ministry, almost €70,000 with 20% from Nerja's local government will be used to provide much needed shade from the beginning of June onwards.
Lower tariffs in Los Huertos car park - 17th Feb 2014
Thanks to an agreement between the town hall and the owner of the Los Huertos/Carabeo car park, tariffs are set to lower during the coming summer and winter season with local authorities having greater control over pricing in the future. In exchange for the renewal of the necessary licenses for the car parks operation the owner has agreed to lower the cost of using the facility for both local residents and those visiting the town in both summer and winter with the town hall now having control over any future price increases. The new tariffs see a reduction of up to 60% in some cases.
Carnival prizes increased - 14th Feb 2014
Sandra Jimena, councillor for popular traditions in Nerja, has announced an increase in the prize money for costumes in this years Nerja Carnival. The majority of prizes in the 30th edition of the event will now be from €100 with the biggest prize, that of Ninfa del Carnaval (best female costume) reaching €1600. The greatest number of prizes to be handed out over the four day long carnival will be awarded to those taking part in the main procession on the 1st of March with some thirty five prizes being handed out over nine separate categories.
Potato trade crack down - 13th Feb 2014
Local police have taken action against an illegal street vendor in Calle Pintada this week after discovering the man illegally selling potatoes from the back of his van. The individual from Utrera was found advertising his product using a megaphone and with twenty three sacks of spuds in the van. According to municipal bye-laws the use of a megaphone and the sale of products in this fashion is prohibited within the town.
Preparations begin for Nerja's Dia del Pedal - 12th Feb 2014
With the end of February comes Nerja's "Dia del Pedal", an event which forms part of the regional "Andalucia day" activities on the 28th and something which year on year grows in popularity. For a couple of hours the streets of Nerja are taken over by cyclists as they make their way around a route through the town which starts and ends at Plaza de España by the museum. The organisers of this years edition, now in its sixteenth year are hoping to break last years record of 2,374 registered participants and are urging both residents and visitors to take part. If you'd like to be part of this annual event in the Nerja calendar you can register in the municipal sports office in Calle Carlos Millón from February 20th.
Town hall supports local taxi drivers - 11th Feb 2014
Inocencia Quintero, Nerja councillor for Transport, has once again expressed support for the municipality's taxi drivers regarding their rights to pick up fares from Malaga airport despite opposition from the city's own cabbies. Her remarks came the day before a meeting of representatives from the Axarquia municipalities and Axarquia taxi drivers to attempt to deal with the long running situation. Currently taxis registered in coastal municipalities such as Nerja, Fuengirola and Marbella can pick up fares from Malaga airport and port whilst the cities taxis can only pick up passengers from within the city itself.
Landscape exhibition at Sala Mercado - 10th Feb 2014
A new exhibition of paintings is now open to the public in La Sala Mercado in Nerja by local artist Sebastián Molina. The collection of paintings, entitled "Paisajes y ensoñaciones" (landscapes and daydreams) is inspired by images from the artists youth in the nearby village of Algarrobo and includes images of village streets and rural scenes. The exhibition is free to enter and will be open until the 27th of February from 11am â 1:30pm and from 5pm â 7pm.
Eagle owl rescued - 7th Feb 2014
Police officers rescued a trapped owl yesterday in a local crematorium after a nearby municipal worker heard it struggling on the buildings second floor. The Eagle-Owl which is one of the largest species of owl in the world and is found across Europe and Asia was later handed over to the Malaga Centre for the Recuperation of Endangered Species to be checked over before being released.
British artist exhibits work - 6th Feb 2014
A new exhibition is now open in Nerja's exhibition hall in Calle Cristo of works by the British artist and long-time expat Helen Pritchard. The collection, which will be open until the 22nd of February is comprised of various sculptures, lamps and floating mobiles, made from a fusion of materials such as glass and precious metals through which she aims to portray the beauty and simplicity of nature in all its forms. If you'd like to take a look you can do so from 11am until 2pm and from 5pm until 8pm.
