Work starts of water treatment plant - 18th Jan 2014

After many years of waiting it would appear that work has finally begun on Nerja's water treatment plant, at least according to the mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo. Although final documents regarding the project still need to be officially signed off the mayor highlighted that construction begins when machinery and workmen are in place and as a result considers that the complex project which has been many years in the planning is finally underway. He said that if no further delays are encountered, the town should have its water treatment plant, capable of serving 100,000 people, up and running within two years.

Maro celebrates San Anton - 17th Jan 2014

The first annual fiesta after Christmas got off to a good start in Maro last night with the village paying homage to its patron saint San Anton. Despite the occasional shower over 30 bonfires were lit and the main streets adorned with flags as the local Choir Sal y Arena wandered from one bonfire to the next accompanied by locals and tourists singing traditional rumbas and sevillanas.

FITUR tourism fair - 16th Jan 2014

This year Nerja will once again be represented at the FITUR four day international tourism fair in Madrid, sharing a stand with the Nerja Caves foundation. The fair, which begins on the 22nd of January, acts as an annual meeting point for tourism professionals interested in the Iberian peninsula and is considered the most prestigious of the year. The Nerja tourism department will use the occasion to promote this year's Nerja Caves music and dance festival as well as the Nerja Carnival which is in its 30th year and is set to begin at the end of February.

Maro botanical garden - 14th Jan 2014

Nieves Atencia, councillor for the environment in Nerja, has announced that the town hall has approved a modification of the botanical garden project in Maro which will allow the original route between the village and the Nerja Caves to be used. The path was removed when work began in favour of one that bordered the newly renovated area but will now be replaced by an elevated path along the lines of the original which will allow users a greater view over the gardens.

Fire station politics - 13th Jan 2014

The Provincial council of Malaga has seized the initiative over the political stalemate surrounding Nerja's new fire station and agreed to pay the Junta de Andalusia's share of the project in the short term allowing work to go ahead. The fire station has been increasingly delayed thanks to a wall of silence from the Junta regarding the new complex despite funding being agreed some time ago and has lead the Malaga authorities to take the move to get things going. Elías Bendodo, president of the Malaga council, stressed however that whilst his organisation will provide funds to cover the amount promised by the Junta in the short term it does expect that money to be repaid and will be sure to put in place the necessary initiatives to make sure this happens.

55th caves anniversary - 11th Jan 2014

Tomorrow will be the 55th anniversary of the discovery of the Nerja caves by five boys from the village of Maro which will be commemorated in a small ceremony marking the event and the now customary annual stroll through the caves by the five men who still reside in the area.

Maro prepares for San Antón - 10th Jan 2014

The end of the Christmas festivities brings a quick breather before Maro celebrates its patron saint, San Antón. Sandra Jimena, councillor for popular traditions, and the organisers of this year's fiestas have presented the program of events taking place on the 16th and 17th of January. The fiestas will begin at 6pm on the 16th with a mass in the Iglesia de las Maravillas in the village square and continue into the evening with music from the Arena y Sal choir and local group Son del Arte. On the 17th the activities will begin from 2pm with more music from local groups, entertainment for the children and fireworks with the procession of San Antón beginning at 9pm.

Has Nerja disappeared? - 8th Jan 2014

The town hall has applied to the Junta de Andalucia for the removal of a tourism guide in which Nerja seems to have disappeared. The guide which covers the Axarquia region includes Velez-Malaga, Algarrobo, Torrox, Frigiliana and Almuñécar yet where Nerja should appear leaves only a void with no mention of the town, the Balcón de Europa or the famous Nerja Caves. The relationship between the Junta and town hall has proven to be highly political in recent years with opposing parties controlling the separate entities, leading to raised eyebrows in Nerja concerning such an obvious error.

Golf course subject comes up yet again - 7th Jan 2014

Despite the subject of the Nerja Golf Course becoming something of a long running joke in the town it would appear that thanks to a new high court ruling concerning articles in the regional development plan for the Axarquia it may yet come to pass. The decision, which means that various articles within the plan will be annulled, leaves the urban planning situation in Nerja perfectly clear, removing the differences of opinion between the town hall and the Junta de Andalucia and, amongst the many consequences, the way clear for the much talked about project to theoretically go ahead. The mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, remarked that this now leaves the project "more viable than ever" in legal terms although only time will tell as to whether the project actually moves any further forwards.

Three kings reach Nerja - 6th Jan 2014

Last night saw the three kings visit Nerja much to the delight of the local children who turned out in vast numbers to see them parade through the streets. There was a seemingly endless supply of sweets for onlookers as well as opportunities aplenty for photos with the visitors once the procession had reached the Balcon de Europa. The kings then presented their gifts to the waiting baby Jesus outside El Salvador church before going on to deliver to the children of the town.

The three king's postmen pay a visit - 3rd Jan 2014

Today will see a very special arrival for the children of Nerja with the official postmen of the three kings (Los Reyes Magos) in the town to collect their three king's wish lists. This year the event will take place in Plaza de España instead of the Balcon de Europa as it has in previous years but will have the extra attraction of the theatre group La Carpa providing entertainment as well as books and sweets for the eager children. Infrastructure works continue - 2nd Jan 2014

Antonio García, councillor for infrastructure, has announced further improvements to the town's drainage system with work in the streets of Iglesia and Tajillo just a stone's throw from the Balcon de Europa. He explained that the works once completed will leave the streets with a similar style although Tajillo will be greatly improved from its current appearance. The project, jointly funded by the town hall and regional council of Malaga, is expected to cost €65,000.
