A Christmas scene in Nerja - 9th Dec 2013
This year's municipal nativity scene which is traditionally located in the exhibition hall on Calle Cristo was officially opened last weekend with members of the Brotherhood of the Captive, one of Nerja's Catholic brotherhoods and also the society that has created this year's display, singing carols to the small crowd that had gathered. Sandra Jimena, councillor for popular traditions, thanked the members for their efforts before Andrés Pérez, the parish priest of El Salvador, blessed the display. Anyone interested in taking a quick look can do so every day after 6pm.
Local music teacher reaches European stage - 7th Dec 2013
Elisa Urrestarazu, professor at Nerja's municipal school of music, last weekend gave a soloist performance at the Auditorium de Bourdeaux, playing a modern piece by Luciano Berio. The musician who teaches children under the age of eight in Nerja last year won the SACEM prize and was awarded a grant to tour with the European Union Youth Wind Orchestra. Her success has acted to motivate many young musicians in the town, some of whom were active in this weeks events for Constitution Day which took place on Friday.
New museum exhibition - 6th Dec 2013
A new exhibition has been opened to the public at the Nerja Museum of work by the artist Rafael Jiménez. The exhibition entitled a.K is made up of a series of 'reinterpreted prehistoric objects' made in clay and decorated in a way that the artist hopes will provoke questions of our own origins to visitors. The exhibition will be open until the 10th of January from 10am until 6.30pm with a two hour closure for siesta from 2pm.
More Christmas lights for Nerja - 5th Dec 2013
An agreement has been signed between the town hall and a local business association allowing more Christmas lights to be on display throughout the town than in previous years despite the town hall spending €6000 less. The agreement covers the Pintada, Cruz and Diputacion streets and includes a total of 27 separate sets of lights. This, along with the contracted displays directly paid for by the local authorities brings the cost of the illuminations to approximately €21,000.
Students now equipped to recycle at school - 4th Dec 2013
New recycling bins have been made available to schools within the municipality as part of an environmental awareness campaign aiming to introduce recycling at an early age. The bins, provided by the provincial council of Malaga, will be to recycle paper and plastic containers and have been very positively received by the two schools that have taken delivery. This is another step forwards for Nerja's recycling program which currently recycles more plastic containers and cartons than any other town in the Axarquia.
Town Hall takes action to protect aqueduct - 30th Nov 2013
Following a visit to the Acueducto del Aguila by local officials from Nerja and Maro today, the town hall has announced that it will take action against whoever has been illegally dumping earth at the site in what appears to be the construction of an access road to a nearby finca. The town hall was first alerted to the situation by the 'La Volaera' cultural association which aims to protect and promote the cultural heritage of the sites within the municipality. Local officials and police will return to the area on Monday to evaluate the cost of reversing the work done and to formally identify the offending company or individual.
Christmas program at Culture Centre - 29th Nov 2013
Gema Garcia, councillor for education and culture, has announced that this Sunday the Culture centre will begin it's Christmas program with a special eye on entertaining the children of Nerja over the festive period. The program includes children's shows with local theatre group 'La Carpa' taking a leading role and films for the kids being screened every Saturday with an entrance price of just €1. The centre will continue to cater for adults though with the children's events taking place at midday.
Rivers prepared for winter storms - 28th Nov 2013
Nieves Atencia, Nerja's councilor for the environment, has announced that works have already begun on the mouth of the Rio Chillar and will soon begin on the Rio Seco to prepare them for any heavy rains that the municipality may experience this winter. Work will principally be carried out to remove vegetation and litter.
A day to highlight domestic violence problem in Spain - 27th Nov 2013
Yesterday saw a day of activities throughout the town as part of the campaign to raise awareness and stamp out the problem of domestic violence and gender violence in Spain. Representatives from various women's associations along with other local groups including the brotherhood of Jesus Cautivo, the recently formed Balcon de Europa theatre company and the town's political figures all took part in numerous acts in Nerja which culminated in a symbolic release of white balloons on the Balcon de Europa.
Castilla Pérez partially closed on Monday - 23rd Nov 2013
This Monday (25th November) the final section of Avenida Castilla Pérez will be closed for work to be carried out to improve the sanitation system. Diverts will be put into place for the three day long period that the work is expected last for and the urban 'blue bus' service will continue to reach all of its current stops.
Rio Seco works begin - 22nd Nov 2013
Work on the three fords for the Rio Seco has begun according to an announcement made by Antonio GarcÃa, councillor for infrastructure.The three fords which are part of a program of improvements being carried out by the ministry of agriculture, fishing and rural development are seen as vital for the safety of the many farmers and residents of the area that frequently cross the river.
Ministry of Industry supports Nerja business - 21st Nov 2013
In the last few days representatives of the Spanish ministry of industry have signed an agreement which aims to support small and medium sized businesses in Nerja's tourism sector. The agreement looks to promote innovation, further developing the tourism offer of the municipality and making local businesses more competitive. This will include new funds destined to better understand how Nerja can improve as a tourist destination and support new initiatives.
