Water treatment plant works edge nearer - 25th Sep 2013

José Alberto Armijo, the Mayor of Nerja, last week met with officials from the ministry for the environment to discuss issues surrounding the construction of the towns new water treatment plant. The legal stages of the project are now nearing completion with only a couple of steps to be completed before workmen can begin. The mayor received assurances from officials of their commitment to begin the construction of the plant before the end of the year.

New health centre back on the agenda - 24th Sep 2013

Following the appointment of a new councillor for equality, health and social relations in the Provincial Council of Malaga, Nerja town hall has seized the initiative in an attempt to move forward the development of the towns long awaited new health centre. Despite the town halls constant pressure regarding the subject little ground has been made in recent months with local councillor's requests for action effectively being ignored.

Culture centre season off to a flying start - 23rd Sep 2013

The Nerja Culture Centres 16th season got off to a great start last Saturday with a full house for its first show. The audience made up of a mix of young and old enjoyed a performance of 'El Avaro', a classic play written by the famous French playwrite Molière.

A Place in the Sun visits Nerja - 20th Sep 2013

The British TV station Channel 4 will be filming an episode of their popular program 'A Place in the Sun' in Nerja for five days from the 30th of September. The program helps British citizens find foreign homes whilst showcasing what the region has to offer and has visited numerous countries throughout the world including Spain, France, Canada and Australia as well as islands in the Caribbean.

Siblings exhibit work - 19th Sep 2013

A new exhibition of paintings by sibling duo Iván and Toñi Ortega Caballero is now open to the public in the exhibition hall in Calle Cristo. The exhibition which is called 'Encuentros' (Encounters in English) features a far more modern style than that which is typically exhibited in the municipal hall and will be open until 29th of September from 11am until 1pm and from 6pm until 10pm.

Nerja politicians continue to push on harbour project - 18th Sep 2013

The Partido Popular political party has presented a motion to the Provincial Council of Malaga calling on the Junta de Andalucia and its various agencies to continue without delay the development on the leisure harbour project which has long been under consideration between Nerja and Torrox. The project has become somewhat of a political football between leading parties in the region with the PP fearing yet more unnecessary delays on a project that has already undergone considerable work, leaving the mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, labelling the attitude of opposition political figures as 'irresponsible'.

Cultural centre's new season begins - 17th Sep 2013

From the 21st September the 16th season of shows and activities are set to begin at the Nerja Cultural Centre with a comedy performed by the 'Pata Teatro' company of 'El Avaro', the story of Harpagón, a man who adores money above all else. The performance of the play written by French playwright Molière starts from 9pm so if you think your Spanish is up to it go along to the ticket office between 10am and 2pm for a free ticket.

Rio Chillar clean-up success - 16th Sep 2013

The clean-up day which was organized by Nerja's Civil Protection unit with the support of the town hall was well supported with some 50 volunteers turning up to remove rubbish from the riverbanks. People of all ages took part with the end result being the removal of 30 bags of rubbish!

Fuente del Esparto hostel opening soon - 12th Sep 2013

Councillor for the environment, Nieves Atencia, has announced that the rural hostel at the Fuente del Esparto spring close to the El Pinarillo picnic area in the Sierra Almijara could be open to the public this very month providing remaining work to improve the hostel is carried out. The hostel once ready will be able to cater for 20 people in four modules of five beds and have the usual communal areas. This project is another example of the continuing work to open up the natural park to tourists and encourage its use.

Nerja school gets new lift - 11th Sep 2013

Following a campaign by the town hall, parents and associations of Nerja, the Nueva Nerja school located not far from the towns bus station is set to receive a new lift but not by the channels expected. Following a report on national radio station Onda Cero the renowned Spanish journalist Eduardo San Martín got in contact with the program and has offered to donate a lift meaning that pupils with mobility issues can now get to areas of the school that have previously been very difficult for them to access.

Tonelly circus holdup - 10th Sep 2013

The Tonelly circus which has moved into the new El Playazo car park and which was expected to be entertaining visitors from the 6th until the 15th has suffered a temporary setback due to rules governing this type of event as laid out by the autonomous community of Andalusia. Specifically the circus does not have all the paperwork in order concerning its electrical installations. Once the paperwork presented satisfies all safety requirements the town hall will be able to authorize the circus to open to the public.

Maro's feria comes to a close - 9th Sep 2013

This year's feria ended last night with the procession of Maro's patron, the 'Virgen de las Maravillas', through the streets of the village accompanied by the Municipal band and crowds of onlookers. Once completed the figure of the Virgin was welcomed back to the chapel with local singing and dancing and participants eager to take a flower from the idols 'trono' as a token to remember the evening by.
