Nerja Caves permanent seating removed - 11th Oct 2013
Work has now been completed in the Sala del Ballet at the Nerja Caves to remove the seating grandstand that was installed in the 70's. Under the supervision of José Luis Sanchidrián from the arqueology department of the University of Cordoba the 500 seat structure was painstakingly dismantled returning the underground landscape to its original appearance. At the end of the works some 20,000 kilos of metal had been removed.
Calle Chaparil improvements - 10th Oct 2013
Next Monday work will begin at the intersection of Calle Chaparil and Calle Antonio Millón with new trees being planted along the street to replace those that have caused damage to the pavement. The effected area will reach up to Calle Jaen and is part of a continued project that has seen various improvements to the Plaza Tutti Frutti area of Nerja.
Road will be ready for new fire services park - 9th Oct 2013
Antonio Garcia, local councillor for infrastructure, has announced that following a recent all parties meeting in the town hall, funds have been allocated to begin work on the necessary access road for the new fire station complex. The work, which is expected to begin in a few weeks, should take no longer than a month and a half and cost &euro,122,000. Once the work is completed the designated plot will have sufficient access for the construction of the new complex, a project which is currently in the hands of the Junta de Andalucia.
Fishing competition brings in mighty haul - 8th Oct 2013
The arrival of Feria week in Nerja brings with it a variety of activities and competitions amongst which was the 6th Feria de Nerja fishing competition which took place last weekend. It's a team event where participants set out in their boats and the vessel with the greatest weight in fish wins! This year the team aboard the Marisal won with over 13.5 kilos of fish although the competition was fierce amongst the sixteen boats.
Nerja's urban race - 5th Oct 2013
If you suddenly find yourself surrounded by people running tomorrow you'll likely be seeing Nerja's 57th Urban race unfolding. The collection of races that begin on the Balcon de Europa at 10am include various age categories and distances with the 'Caminata Popular', a 1km long walking route, at midday for those not feeling up to running. If youâd like to get involved you can register 30 minutes prior to the events at the starting post on the Balcon.
Tickets for Feria events available - 4th Oct 2013
From this Saturday tickets will be available for the various performances in the Municipal Marquee (Caseta) with prices starting at €10. If you're interested in purchasing tickets for one of the events you can do so from malagaentradas.com or from the Municipal Tourist Office. Improvements to rural roads - 2nd Oct 2013
As part of the national 'Encamina 2' program being carried out by the ministry of agriculture, fishing and rural development work is to be carried out in two rural areas of the municipality. The 'Camino de Viltor' in the Rio de la Miel area is to be tarmacked and three fords are to be built along the route of the Rio Seco improving access to these areas of Nerja. The combined bill for the works will be approximately €212,000 with completion expected by the end of the year.
Seabed cleaning postponed - 1st Oct 2013
Last Sunday saw rather rough seas along Nerja's coastline which were enough to cause the abandonment of the planned sea bed cleaning that was organised by the Nerja diving centre and town hall. The volunteers were put to good use on the day though clearing local beaches of rubbish instead. The diving centre now intends to carry out its yearly cleaning the following Sunday, weather permitting of course.
El Playazo contract signed - 30th Sep 2013
Iberport Consulting, the company chosen to draw up the necessary plans for the development of the El Playazo beach area is now free to begin work on the project following a signing of contracts. The company will now have eleven months to present the completed plans for the development which is expected to cost approximately €2.5 million.
Preparations for feria week begin - 27th Sep 2013
This Saturday will see the images of the two patron saints of Nerja (the Virgin of Anguish and St Michael Archangel) on the streets once again in a procession to bring the image of the Virgin from her chapel back to the church of El Salvador. Following a service that starts at 7pm the procession will begin, setting out from and returning to the Balcon de Europa.
Coastal cleanup - 27th Sep 2013
This Sunday the Nerja diving centre in conjunction with the town hall has organised an environmental cleaning event, like the recent cleaning of the river Chillar but this time on the sea bed! A group of 40 divers along with numerous volunteers on land will be removing rubbish from El Playazo beach all the way along the coast to El Barranco de Maro. This is the 9th such event that has been organised by the diving centre which thankfully finds less rubbish to clear with each passing year.
Graffiti competition - 26th Sep 2013
As part of the activities for Nerja Crea+ 2013 the youth department of the town hall is organising a graffiti competition with the theme being heroes of TV and videogames. Participants can enter up to three original designs, submitting them on A3 paper for the judge's consideration. Hopefuls have until the 22nd of October to hand in their designs with the winners getting the opportunity to recreate the image in a designated area in Nerja and €80 prize money.
