Town hall organises river cleaning day - 7th Sep 2013

The town hall in conjunction with other local groups has organised a clean up day along the river Chillar which meets the sea on the western edge of the town. This is the third time that such an event has been organised and aims to keep a popular local hiking route in good order after the busy months of summer. The volunteers will set out at 08:30 on 15th September. If you'd like to take part you can sign up in the Nerja Cultural Centre, the Civil Protection headquarters or the office for 'Atención al Ciudadano'.

Nerja Feria draws nearer - 6th Sep 2013

The town hall has announced that preparations are beginning for this year's feria with the auctioning of licenses for fairground attractions this coming Wednesday in a meeting in the main town hall building. The following day there will be a further meeting regarding the Casetas, raffles and food stands with a third meeting a few weeks later on 3rd October dedicated to any remaining stall plots available.

Progress continues on El Playazo development - 5th Sep 2013

The ministry for the environment has now awarded the contract to draft plans for the El Playazo development to Iberport Consulting S.A. The company will have eleven months to present the development plans from the signing of the contract which may happen as early as this month. The cost for this stage of the project is reported to be approximately €37,000.

Maro beach pushed into second place - 3rd Sep 2013

After three months of public voting Maro beach has just been beaten to the punch by less than three thousand votes to be named the best beach in Spain. The annual competition held by the Spanish TV station Antena 3 saw last years winner, La Alicantina de La Granadella in Catalonia, proclaimed the winner once again.

Maro prepares for its feria - 2nd Sep 2013

This weekend the neighbouring village of Maro will celebrate its annual feria in honor of the Virgin of Wonders (Virgen de Maravillas). The fair takes place over three days ending on Sunday night. If you'd like to find out more you check out the ferias program here.

Nerja celebrates tourist day - 30th Aug 2013

On 3rd September Nerja will once again celebrate Dia del Turista with a series of performances on the Balcon de Europa from 9pm including traditional flamenco dancing and a Tribute to the Moulin Rouge by the Paris Cabaret company.

Improvements to temporary fire station - 29th Aug 2013

The Provincial Fire Fighters Consortium has begun works to improve Nerja's current fire station located on the N340 road at the Burriana beach turn off. The improvements will be completed in three months at a cost of almost €73,000. Works have gone ahead despite advanced plans for a new fire station in the town which is currently being held up by the regional government of Andalusia due to funding issues.

Proposed hiking route gets green light - 27th Aug 2013

A new project by Malaga Council for a three cultures hiking route bringing together the environment, tourism and sport has gotten the go ahead. The €1.1 million project will be comprised of a 650km long signposted and maintained track, passing through 70% of the municipalities of the region. A 420km stretch is expected to be open by as early as mid-November connecting Nerja with the town of Benalauría, 30km from Ronda. Amongst the benefits such a route would bring for tourists, it's expected to indirectly create some 6,500 new jobs.

New Exhibition by Jesús Reyna - 26th Aug 2013

An exhibition of etchings by local artist Jesús Reyna is now open to the public in La Sala Mercado in Nerja. The exhibition which will be open until the 9th September features scenes inspired by local landscapes and the fishing industry of the area.

Athletics on Burriana - 24th Aug 2013

Yesterday saw Nerja's eleventh Media Legua athletics races on Burriana beach with athletes from the town and surrounding area turning out to compete in the various categories. The activities started from 7pm with the final race leaving at 8pm. Winners of the adult competitions received 100 euros prize money with lesser cash prizes for those in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th.

El Mundo recommends Burriana - 22nd Aug 2013

The national newspaper 'El Mundo' has included Burriana beach in a rundown of its top ten beaches for families in Spain. It highlighted its 800m of golden sand and inclusion in the popular Spanish TV series 'Verano Azul' that was filmed in Nerja in the early 80's. The news comes just as the Town Hall announced the purchase of a new vehicle at a cost of 68,000 euros to be used as part of Nerja's beach cleaning program.

Man rescued from Rio Chillar - 21st Aug 2013

Yesterday a 50 year old man from Malaga was rescued following a fall whilst walking along the Rio Chillar. The rescue which took place during the early evening included cooperation between a number of local organizations including the civil protection, police, guardia civil and members from the local health centre. The victim suffered a fractured leg and hip.
