Conservation campaign draws interest - 16th Jul 2013
Last Sunday Maro beach saw the final phase of the conservation and awareness campaign that has been running over at the natural park of Los Acantilados de Maro y Cerro Gordo. Some 137 people turned up to take part in the free activities such as kayaking and snorkelling which the department for agriculture, fishing and the environment hopes will raise awareness of some of the lesser know beaches available for the public to use. The campaign which is tied in with the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) aims to encourage sustainable management of natural resources from a social, cultural and economic standpoint.
New Nerja book presented - 15th Jul 2013
Last Friday the Nerja Museum hosted the presentation of a new book about Nerja entitled 'Nerja, a welcoming land'. The book is the result of two years of work by the authors and includes numerous photos thanks to collaboration with some 24 separate photographers from the region. The book, made up of twelve chapters, is aimed at both locals and visitors alike and is available in four languages including Spanish, English, French and German from the Nerja museum shop at a cost of €15.
Nerja prepares to celebrate the Virgen del Carmen - 12th Jul 2013
David Román of the Virgen del Carmen brotherhood and local councillor Sandra Jimena have presented the program for this year's events surrounding the procession of the Virgen del Carmen which takes place on Tuesday 16th July. For more information on the Virgen del Carmen in Nerja take a look here.
Local Police catch robbers red handed - 11th Jul 2013
Officers of the local police caught two suspected thieves in the act today whilst patrolling in Calle Mirto, close to Urbanizacion Almijara III. The two individuals who were spotted lifting large steel pipes belonging to Aguas de Narixa claimed to be merely assessing the weight (next to their empty truck). Further investigation lead to the identification of the two individuals who are from Malaga and have previous convictions for similar offences.
Nerja names its tourism ambassador - 10th Jul 2013
The Spanish Singer and Actress Nuria Fergó has been named Nerja's Toursim Ambassador 2013 by a cross party committee from Nerja's Town Hall. The local girl who shot to fame after her participation in the Spanish TV show 'Operación Triunfo' will receive the honorary title on Nerja's 'Tourist Day' which this year will take place on 3rd September. The annual award is given to those people who have contributed to the promotion of Nerja as a tourist destination.
Lifeguards given further training - 9th Jul 2013
The 50 lifeguards who will be ensuring safety on the towns beaches over the summer months are receiving extra training concerning jelly fish stings, spotted weaver fish treatments and further 'first on scene' medical training. The three extra courses come at the insistence of the regional beaches authority and have been welcomed by local councillor Nieves Atencia, who added that although Nerja's lifeguards are qualified to the necessary standards a little extra training is always welcome.
TV games show hits Nerja's streets - 8th Jul 2013
The Spanish channel 4 game show Negocia como puedas will be in town on the 12th July with presenters Miguel MartÃn and Raúl Gómez ready to pounce on the public and offer unsuspecting individuals a chance to negotiate their way to cash prizes. One of the presenters will pose a question and then the contestant has to find a member of the public who knows the answer and buy it from them. Negotiate well though as the cheaper the answer is, the more cash you walk away with! Look out for their black mini van and either follow it or hide, the choice is up to you.
Secrets of the caves revealed - 6th Jul 2013
Yesterday saw another film crew visit the streets of Nerja, this time making a program for the popular Spanish TV series Comando Actualidad which through the summer months is visiting the most attractive areas of Spain. The focus of the filming was at the Nerja Caves including interviews with the discoverers and reporter Mario Montero speaking from inside the beautiful caverns themselves although filming took place across Nerja to include many of the towns most beautiful and enigmatic areas. The program filmed is set to be aired on 17th July.
Town Hall keeps pushing for new health centre - 5th Jul 2013
Nerja's Ayuntamiento continues to keep the pressure high on provincial authorities concerning the long awaited new health centre in the town. It's been revealed that the Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo and local councillor for public health, Nuchi Moreno, have officially sought another appointment to talk about the situation with Daniel Pérez, provincial councillor for public health in Andalusia. It's hoped that this meeting may take place before the end of the month.
Good week for Nerja in the national press - 4th Jul 2013
The last couple of days have been very positive for Nerja indeed with Maro beach likely to be declared beast beach in Andalusia and now the Balcón de Europa being named amongst the top ten 'Miradores' in Spain by the national newspaper ABC which as well as highlighting the great views and environment around the Balcón itself also praised Nerja for its transformation over the past fifty years from fishing town to popular tourist destination. As if this wasn't enough yesterday the Spanish TV station Canal Sur aired a report about Nerja entitled 'Paradise exists and it's in Andalusia' in a film that followed a canoe trip along the beautiful shoreline from Burriana to Maro beach.
New exhibition by Amalia del Corral - 3rd Jul 2013
Nerja's Municipal hall in Calle Cristo is now hosting a collection of decorated ceramics by the artist Amalia del Corral. Gema Garcia, Nerja Councillor for Education and Culture, encourages both locals and tourists to go along and see the exhibition as well as meet Amalia herself, who is happy to speak about the techniques she uses. The exhibition is open from 11:00 until 14:00 and from 19:00 until 22:00 each day until 14th July.
Maro beach gets through round one - 2nd Jul 2013
Maro beach has got through the first round of the Antena 3 yearly competition to find the best beach in Spain thanks to online voting from the public. It now leads the second phase of the competition ahead of the nine other contestants for the best beach in the Andalusia region. Second phase voting will continue throughout July with the third phase beginning 1st August at the end of which the final decision will be declared.
