Beware of false gas inspectors - 2nd Jul 2013

Once again residents are advised to be on their guard for cold calling 'Gas Inspectors' following a number of complaints from residents of Nerja and Maro. In one case an elderly woman was charged &euros;259 for a simple revision of her gas installation. Your gas installation should be checked approximately every five years however no work can be done without your consent. If you do choose to have a check-up make sure you get a written quote first.

Concerned neighbours rescue British woman in Maro - 1st Jul 2013

Last week residents of Maro raised the alarm after growing increasingly concerned about a British neighbour that hadn't been seen for some days. After calling the Guardia Civil and local police the fire brigade were also called to help gain access to the women's apartment where she was discovered collapsed on the floor. It's believed she had been there a number of days and was immediately taken the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía where she remains under observation.

Naval academy students visit Nerja - 29th Jun 2013

A group of students from the Spainish military naval school have visited Nerja for a guided tour from local celebrity Miguel Joven, star of popular TV show Verano Azul. The group was welcomed by Miguel Joven and the Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo before going on to take a tour of the Caves and the towns natural history museum. The first, second and third year students are currently training on the Strategic Projection Vessel, Juan Carlos I, which is currently docked in Malaga.

Children’s summer campus begins - 28th Jun 2013

This Monday sees the beginning of Nerja's annual summer campus for children between the ages of 4 and 15 and will keep the youngsters busy throughout the long summer break with a vast range of activities including basketball, badminton and hiking. Most of the activities will take place on Burriana beach although many of the towns sporting facilities will also be used. The campus runs from 1st July until 31st August and costs €60 per month. Those interested should pass by the La Caixa office in Avenida de Pescia or the Polideportivo in Calle de Carlos Millón.

Handball tournament in Nerja - 27th Jun 2013

This Friday the Sierra Almijara sports pavilion will play host to Nerja's fourth International Handball tournament with teams from Andalucia and England taking part. The event will kick off from 10:30 in the morning and will go on throughout the day with the final ceremony for awarding winners medals being held at 21:30.

Caves set to apply for World Heritage site status - 26th Jun 2013

In the latest meeting of the Nerja Caves foundation council the proposal by Vice President and Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, to apply for UNESCO World Heritage status found unanimous support amongst members. Although this is not the first time that this move has been suggested the proposal will now seek further support from other local and regional groups.

Beach preparations for the summer season - 25th Jun 2013

Nieves Atencia, councillor with responsibility for beaches, was present last Friday whilst the newly awarded blue flags were raised on Burriana and La Torrecilla beaches. During the event she outlined the measures that would be put in place this summer to ensure safety for all beach users. This year Nerja's beaches will be covered by some fifty lifeguards, a zodiac rescue boat and a jet ski as well extra staff to coordinate the summer long operation. There will also be a cleaning operation incorporating two boats to remove any surface debris as well as twenty beach cleaning staff.

Big crowds turn out for San Juan - 24th Jun 2013

Burriana saw plenty of people turn out to celebrate the night of San Juan with music and alcohol flowing in preparation for the main events of fireworks, bonfires and brave souls taking a midnight dip in the sea. Other beaches attracted participants too with La Torrecilla playing host to small celebrations and El Playazo where the party was well underway.

Night of San Juan draws near - 21st Jun 2013

Once again the night of San Juan has come around and Nerja is set to celebrate. Burriana beach is set to host the towns official celebrations with a Verbana (open air festival) starting at 10pm with music from local group Alalba and fireworks at midnight. Anybody interested in a bit of beach camping can do so from tomorrow morning on El Playazo until the night of the 24th and on Burriana on the evening of the 23rd.

New Parking on El Playazo - 20th Jun 2013

This Friday, just in time for San Juan, a new car park will be opened to the public along El Playazo beach. The area with space for some 300 vehicles is located at the western end of the beach and can be accessed from the main road (N340). Visitors to the area are urged to leave their vehicles in this new car park instead of parking along the track directly behind El Playazo beach.

Fuente del Esparto track remains open - 19th Jun 2013

This year the track from the Nerja caves to El Pinarrillo and Fuente del Esparto will remain open to vehicles according to Nieves Atencia, local councillor for the environment. She explained that the decision was made by the provincial authority for Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment with the aim of allowing access the Casa de los Mineros and the pick nick areas merendero.

Q for quality awards - 18th Jun 2013

Following the recent awarding of blue flags to two of Nerja's beaches, Nieves Atencia, local councillor responsible for beaches, has announced that the municipality has received three Q for quality awards. Burriana, la Torrecilla and El Chucho have all been awarded the prestigious Q for quality flag to fly. The award takes into account cleanliness, facilities, safety and relevant signposting / information and has been awarded to 174 beaches this year. This is the first time El Chucho has received this award and marks the continuing efforts of the Town Hall to improve the tourist experience.
