Walker rescued after fall in Rio Chillar - 17th Jun 2013

Members of Nerja's civil protection force were called upon yesterday to help rescue a hiker following a fall whilst walking along the Rio Chillar. The individual was part of a large group of some fifty other hikers from Cordoba and suffered injuries to her leg whilst in the area known as El Salto Grande. She was looked over at the health centre here in Nerja before being moved to the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía.

Copla music at the Cultural Centre - 17th Jun 2013

Any fans of traditional Spanish Copla music should be thrilled to here of the return to Nerja of the singer Mónica Márquez with her first appearance here in thirteen years. On the night of the 22nd June she along with an orchestra directed by Pedro Gordillo and a dance troop providing movement to the music will be performing at the cultural centre from 9pm. Tickets for the two hour long show are only €6 and are available from the centres ticket office.

Tropical Garden undergoes a little maintenance - 15th Jun 2013

The Nerja Caves tropical garden which has been enjoyed by visitors since its inauguration in 1997 has been spruced up thanks to a visit from students of the Special Education Centre Santa Rosa de Lima in Malaga. The visitors, many of which suffer from disabilities, have worked on improving the illustrative tiles around the plants which identify species as well giving the plants themselves some extra care and attention.

Nerja receives its blue flags - 15th Jun 2013

In an event held in Marbella, the 96 blue flags awarded this year for beach quality throughout the Costa del Sol have been handed over to representatives of some 31 separate municipalities, Nerja being amongst them. Nieves Atencia, councillor with responsibility for beaches has attended to collect the two flags awarded to La Torrecilla and Burriana here in Nerja.

El Playazo Paseo Maritimo attracts attention - 14th Jun 2013

A total of 20 companies have presented offers to draw up plans for El Playazo's new promenade according to the Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo. The tender budget stands at €71,000 with the regional department for the coast expecting to award the contract in July. The winning company will then have eleven months to draw up technical plans for the new Paseo which the Town Hall sees as vital for the further development of tourism.

"Tiempo Muerto" at the cultural centre - 13th Jun 2013

Gema Garcia, local Councillor for Education and Culture, has announced that this Saturday (15th June), the peña flamenca Alboreá will present its show "Tiempo Muerto". Anybody in the mood for some authentic Andalusian Flamenco is welcome to attend the show which starts at 9pm at the Cultural Centre in Calle Granda. Tickets, which are available from the centres ticket office are €7.

Busy week for the Caves - 12th Jun 2013

Last week saw the Nerja Caves Foundation take part in Euroal, the Tourism, Art and Culture fair of Latin America and Europe that was held in Torremolinos. It forms part of the continuing promotion of the Caves as a tourist attraction, in this case reaching some 2,500 tourism professionals from all over the world. The event was followed by a visit from Latin American journalists to the Caves who enjoyed an out of hour's tour this week and the announcement that the University of Kentucky will be carrying out a visitor study over the summer period.

Triman Navarra collaborates with Nerja Club - 11th Jun 2013

The indoor football team Triman Navarra has come to a collaboration agreement with Nerja's municipal indoor football school. The partnership has long been an objective for Nerja and leaves the way open for local hopefuls to try out for places in the Pamplona based division one team. It also means that Nerja's school will receive extra funding and a new kit.

Maro beach, best in Spain? - 8th Jun 2013

The Spanish TV station Antena 3 has begun its yearly search for the countries best beach. This year, amongst the proposed candidates is the beach at Maro which has been suggested due to its relatively untouched nature, clear waters and lush surroundings. If the beach wins the regional competition for Andalucia it could go on the win the national title.

New exhibition by Francisco Martín Tamayo - 7th Jun 2013

Now open to the public in the municipal hall in Calle Cristo is a new exhibition by the watercolour painter Francisco Martín Tamayo. The well known and prolific painter who received training at the arts academy of San Telmo will be displaying a number of his works to the public up until the 27th June. If you're interested in seeing the exhibition you can do so Monday to Friday from 6pm until 9:30pm and on Saturdays from 11am until 2:30pm.

New steps to keep Nerja's beaches clean - 6th Jun 2013

Local councillors and volunteers ventured onto Burriana and Torrecilla beaches yesterday in a move to discourage beach users from putting out their cigarettes in the beach sand. Those taking part spoke to sun worshippers, handing out leaflets and disposable ash trays as part of an initiative linked to World Environment day. The move goes hand in hand with the Town Halls continuing efforts to maintain the municipalities beaches after recently having the blue flag status on both the beaches visited renewed.

Health centre's lift on the way - 5th Jun 2013

Today Nerja's mayor, José Alberto Armijo, has presented the license required to start work on the health centres new lift to the regional health authorities of the Axarquia. This is one of the final requirements of the process meaning work on the €56,000 installation will begin shortly and should take no longer than two months until completion.
