New fords for Rio Seco - 11th May 2013
Antonio GarcÃa, Councillor for Infrastructure, has announced plans to build three new fords along the route of El Rio Seco. He said that once the technical reports were completed the Ayuntamiento would grant the license to allow Tragsa, the company selected to carry out this project, to begin work in just a couple of weeks time. The fords have been long awaited by the agricultural community and also include improvements to rural roads and tracks. The total cost for this project is expected to be more than €80,000.
Caves offers new group visits - 10th May 2013
From May 16th until the end of June the Nerja Caves is set to offer a new visiting option to this local attraction for groups of up to 50 people at a time. The tour, guided by local celebrity Miguel Joven who played 'Tito' in the famous Spanish TV series 'Verano Azul' which was filmed in Nerja will be available twice daily and is set to provide a dramatic experience with lighting displays providing a few surprises whilst you wander through the caverns.
Work begins on Burriana's new car park - 8th May 2013
Preliminary works have begun on the new underground car park in the Burriana beach area with mechanical diggers moving in to prepare the plot for development. Despite the fact that construction is not set to begin until after the summer the land is being prepared ahead of time and will be open for use during the summer months for visitors to park their cars.
San Isidro 2013 poster unveiled - 7th May 2013
Councilor for Popular Traditions, Sandra Jimena, has presented a poster for this year's San Isidro celebrations produced by José Miguel Ortuño. As well as the poster she also announced the timetable of events for the celebrations themselves which will take place on the 14th and 15th of May.
Calle Pintada group wins best cross - 6th May 2013
This year's winning display for Day of the Cross was put together by the shops and businesses of Calle Pintada. The nautically themed display attracted lots of attention from both locals and tourists with music and wine adding to the atmosphere.
Town hall tackles dog mess issue - 3rd May 2013
Officials from Nerja Town Hall have informed the public that local police are already beginning to enforce municipal bye-laws regarding dog mess in public areas with several dog owners receiving fines. This follows a campaign in the municipality to make owners aware of their responsibilities and the penalties should they not take them seriously. The fines currently being issued are relatively low however dog owners can be fined hundreds of euros if deemed appropriate.
Day of the Cross - 2nd May 2013
Tomorrow will see thirteen crosses displayed throughout Nerja and Maro to mark the Day of the Cross with the majority being concentrated in and around the Balcon de Europa. Various local groups take part in this yearly, one day event which also has a competitive edge.
Nerja looks to improve its hiking routes - 30th Apr 2013
The Town Hall has approved a motion presented by the councilor for the environment, Nieves Atencia, to apply to the Junta de Andalucia for an official plan regarding the improvement of the hiking routes in the nearby natural park of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama. It's an issue that has been on the agenda for some time with local business associations providing the driving force behind the subject. The municipality of Nerja is looking to make general improvements to the existing paths as well as adding new routes and providing better signage overall throughout the area.
Lifeguard recruitment set to begin for summer season - 26th Apr 2013
The Town Hall has agreed the contractual terms for the employment of lifeguards to protect Nerja's principle tourist beaches such as Burriana and La Torrecilla. The application period will open as soon as the terms are made publicly available and will remain open until the 10th May. The Town Hall intends to employ some 50 lifeguards, 3 for boat safety and 3 coordinators.
Castilla Pérez closed to traffic - 24th Apr 2013
Work being carried out on Calle El Barrio means that a small section of Calle Castilla Pérez will be closed until Saturday 27th whilst various infrastructure networks are connected up with those of Calle Antonio Millón opposite. Diverts will be put in place for cars and the taxi rank will continue to be available. Work on the project continues to be on course for its expected completion date of the end of June.
Nerja celebrates Book Day - 23rd Apr 2013
The town has once again celebrated its yearly book day with book stalls and events to mark this cultural initiative. The Town Hall department for education and culture provided a stand opposite the main Town Hall building where local authors could sell their works whilst the department for youth organised a book interchange in Calle Cristo. As well as this the library organised a number of events for younger readers including a story telling session and a treasure hunt.
Burriana car park another step closer - 22nd Apr 2013
The Mayor of Nerja has today signed a contract putting an end to the bidding period for the construction of a new underground car parking facility in Burriana. A consortium of two companies has been awarded the contract to build the car park which will have room for approximately 200 vehicles once completed. The consortium will now submit necessary documents for approval such as the sites security plan after which work can begin. The project is expected to take 18 months to be completed with a final cost of over €2.5 million.
