Getting ready for Dia de la Cruz - 6th Apr 2013
The inscription period has now opened for individuals and organizations that wish to participate in this years Dia de la Cruz competition with the deadline for entrants being 26th April. The day of the display will be the 3rd May. By signing up with the office for popular traditions entrants can be sure that the judges will visit their display and also be included on the map with all cross locations throughout the town.
Photographic exhibition by Andrés Breijo - 5th Apr 2013
The Cultural Centre has today opened a new exhibition of images captured by the local photographer Andrés Breijo. This is his first solo exhibition and includes a wide range of images such as landscapes, wildlife shots and striking nocturnal pictures taken in and around Nerja. The display has been entitled "Visualia" and is open to viewing until 29th May.
Leisure harbour frustrations - 3rd Apr 2013
Antonio GarcÃa, councillor for infrastructure in Nerja, has voiced his frustrations with the Junta de Andalucia regarding the proposed Leisure harbour, citing a lack of political will within the Junta. It comes following the latest delay from the Junta de Andalucia who now insist that a plan covering the whole coast is necessary before further plans for the port in Nerja are made available.
Good Easter for hoteliers - 2nd Apr 2013
Hotels in Nerja registered more than an 85% occupancy rate during the Easter festivities this year despite the poor weather that had been forecast for the period. Nerja continues to register occupancy rates above the provincial average with Spaniards, principally from Madrid, making up the majority of visitors followed by the British and Germans respectively.
Nerja embarks on second "Noche en Blanco" - 1st Apr 2013
Local councillor for education and culture, Gema Garcia, has appealed to all local artists and groups that didn't participate last year to take part in the second edition of the Noche en Blanco which is currently being organized. The date set for this year is May 18th with many of last years performers already signed up. The Noche en Blanco is a series of cultural events which sees the towns museum, exhibition halls and public spaces opened up as performance spaces for local talents.
Big crowds for Maundy Thursday procession - 29th Mar 2013
Last night's procession by the brotherhood of 'Our Father Jesus of Nazareth and the Virgin of Hope' attracted even larger crowds than the previous night with the square in front of El Salvador church notably fuller. The procession that followed a longer route than Wednesdays was unhindered by the weather with local people staying out to see the statues pass despite the later hour.
Easter processions kick off in the rain - 28th Mar 2013
The brotherhood of 'Our Father Jesus Captive and Saint Mary of the Defenceless' took to the streets last night (although to rather a showery beginning) to start off this week's Easter processions. Despite the poor weather many onlookers stayed to watch the parade and enjoy the atmosphere that it brings, taking the opportunity to take plenty of pictures as it passed.
Town Hall pushes for leisure harbour information - 28th Mar 2013
The Ayuntamiento will apply to the Agencia Pública de Puestos for a preliminary overview of the plans to develop a leisure harbour close to the town following the latest parliamentary meeting held at the town hall. Local councillors are still looking to clarify where the port would be located as well as learn of the potential environmental impacts such a facility would have on the areas wildlife.
Nerja Crea+ 2013 - 25th Mar 2013
Sandra Jimena, councillor for youth, has announced the beginning of this years Nerja Crea+ initiative which involves a series of competitions for local people between the ages of 14 to 35. The first of these is a design contest to chose the poster for International Youth Day which the town will participate in. There are three prizes for this competition with the winner getting 150 euros.
Nerja remains a municipality of abundant tourism - 22nd Mar 2013
Nerja has held on to its title of "Municipio de Gran Afluencia" for another four years after the Junta de Andalucia approved the step. The title means that local businesses have more flexible opening hours during the Easter break and over the summer periods.
New information office for the Caves and Museum - 21st Mar 2013
The Town Hall and Nerja Caves foundation have reached an agreement over a new information office situated opposite the town's principal tourist office. It's been described as a great location for the promotion of the caves and museum thanks to the high numbers of tourists that pass through that area.
Fuente del Baden works begin again - 20th Mar 2013
Following a meeting yesterday between local councilors and the company developing the SUP-4 project in Fuente del Baden it's been announced that work is to begin again as of 1st April. The works had to be stopped back in august due to necessary changes to the development plan adding an additional €780,000 cost to the project. Once finished the area will be the location of some 400 new houses, sporting facilities and parks.
