Keeping Nerja Clean - 4th Mar 2013

Local councillor, José Miguel García, has asked that all residents of Nerja respect local bye-laws concerning the hours between which rubbish can be left for collection and the issue of dog mess in the streets. Following a number of fines being given out in recent days he reminds everybody that such fines can be anywhere between €30 and €600+ depending on the severity of the offence and that rubbish should only be deposited after 10pm.

Health centre will get its new lift - 2nd Mar 2013

Following a meeting held late last week the mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, has confirmed that the current health centre will finally have a lift installed. He added that as soon as the necessary technical documents arrive in the town hall everything possible will be done to complete the project as quickly as possible. Although a positive piece of news, it's little consolation given that the town has long since expected a new health centre to be built. It has been confirmed that the current location set aside and prepared by the authorities is still suitable although the planning process, due to previous delays, now must be started over.

Dia del Pedal beats it record - 1st Mar 2013

This years 25th cycling event, held on Andalusia day, has continued to attract ever more participants with this years total reaching 2,374 registered riders, almost one hundred more than last years event despite the changeable weather. Following the event various prizes were given out to riders including a prize for the oldest cyclist which this year went to eighty year old Joaquín Alonso González.

Nerja celebrates Dia de Andalucia - 1st Mar 2013

Plaza de Andalucia was once again the location for institutional events marking Andalusia day. The program followed a familiar pattern with a concert by the municipal band, raising of the flag of Andalusia and readings by local children of poems and passages from the regions Statute of Autonomy.

Residents Day breaking records - 27th Feb 2013

This year's Residents Day, taking place on April 14th, is already set to break the record for the number of organizations participating with 38 separate groups already signed up with the final date for applications still not reached. Currently there will be eight bars set up in Plaza de España serving food from various countries along with music and dancing. The event begins at 12:00 and will continue on until 19:00.

Busy week for the Caves - 26th Feb 2013

The Nerja Caves Foundation this week has been taking part in the second edition of Gastrotur, the Gastronomic fair held in Granada. It marks a good week for the caves with the announcement of the attractions participation in the third biennial 'Arte Flamenco' with a performance by Manolo Sanlúcaron on the 27th July. The events mark the continuing efforts of the Foundation to increase visitor numbers to both the caves and the natural history museum.

Easter poster unveiled - 25th Feb 2013

Last Saturday evening at the cultural centre this year's poster for Easter was presented to the public. This year the talented young painter José Carlos Chica Ramos, who has created a number of posters for Catholic brotherhoods throughout the region, has put paint to paper capturing a scene for Nerja's Easter celebrations. The poster was presented by Jesús Lupiañez Herrera, Nerja's mayor José Alberto Armijo and other religious and political figures from the town.

Christmas shop front competition results - 24th Feb 2013

Prizes have been given out by the Nerja business association to the winning shops for last seasons Christmas decorations. First prize was €600 and was awarded to 'Modas Tara' with 'Carmari' and 'El Taller de la Amistad' coming second and third respectively. The judges took into consideration creativity, originality and the overall environment created amongst other criteria.

Nerja receives 111 new recycling rubbish bins - 23rd Feb 2013

In preparation for this years summer season the provincial government's department for the environment has seen fit to provide one hundred and eleven new yellow recycling bins. The extra bins are intended to deal with the increased rubbish produced during the busy summer months with the hope that they'll increase the amount of rubbish recycled.

Albert Vila concert - 22nd Feb 2013

As part of this season's performances and the Nerja Cultural Centre's 'Nerjazz' festival the guitarist Albert Vila with give a concert this evening as part of a jazz quartet (guitar, saxophone, drums and double bass). This is one of many performances that he'll give this year on a tour that takes in Spain, Germany, Belgium and the Czech Republic.

Twenty five years of Dia del Pedal - 21st Feb 2013

On 28th February Nerja will stage its twenty fifth edition of 'Dia del Pedal', a non-competitive sports day where everybody is encouraged to take to their bikes, following a route through the town starting and ending on the Balcon de Europa. Each year the numbers of participants increase with organizers expecting to improve still further on last year's number of 2,293 registered riders.

Second phase of road works set to start - 20th Feb 2013

Antonio Garcia, councilor for infrastructure, has announced that contracts have been signed with the company Transportes Antelo to carry out the planned improvements to the second section of Calle El Barrio, which connects Calle Castilla Pérez with Plaza Cavana. Work is expected to begin very soon on this second phase and should be completed in time for the summer season. As well as a general facelift the street will also receive improvements to infrastructure supplies, sanitation and drainage at a cost of €280,000.
