Nerja's municipal band visits Lisbon - 18th Feb 2013

Following an invitation from the director of the School of the National Conservatory of Music of Lisbon, the municipal band will be giving a concert alongside former pupils on Saturday 23rd February in the school's auditorium. Past pupils of the school include the award winning neoclassical composer Armando José Fernandes, who later went on to teach at the school as well.

Town Hall on the case for fire station improvements - 16th Feb 2013

Local government has approved a motion put forward by the Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, to apply to the Provincial Council of Malaga for the necessary funding to begin works on the short section of road to Nerja's new fire station. The Junta de Andalucia has already promised funds for the construction of the new complex itself however this does not include these works. The cost is estimated to be approximately €335,000.

Carnival spirit still hasn't left Nerja - 15th Feb 2013

You would think that after the Nerja Carnival you would hear nothing more on the subject until next February but tomorrow the neighbouring village of Maro will celebrate its carnival too. Activities start at 5pm in the village with everybody welcome to join in.

New Exhibition in town - 15th Feb 2013

The Nerja Museum has opened a new exhibition of 32 posters to the public created by the Catalan artist Joan Miró. The posters were all composed between 1963 and 1983 and were used by galleries to publicise exhibitions in which other works by Miró featured. Joan Miró received international acclaim throughout his career and continues to influence designers and artists today with his surrealist style. The exhibition is open until 20th March with public hours of 10am - 2pm and 4pm - 6:30pm, Monday to Sunday.

Possible partial reopening of 'El Paseo de los Carabineros' - 14th Feb 2013

Following a visit by officials from the Department for Coastal Protection it appears that a reopening of a 200m stretch of this pretty walkway may be possible in the future. No time scale has been given but the proposed section would begin from La Calahonda beach. The walkway was closed in 2001 due to safety concerns.

Town Hall presents its Beach Plan for 2013 - 12th Feb 2013

Nerja has submitted all the paperwork necessary to the provincial environmental agency for the upkeep and usage of the municipalities beaches during 2013. It's just one of five local authorities to have already completed this yearly requirement and means that plenty of time remains should any changes be necessary. The plan is similar to those submitted in past years but does include usage changes to Maro and El Cañuelo beaches to include the use of canoes and sunbeds respectively.

Carnival week reaches its finale - 11th Feb 2013

Yesterday saw the end of this years carnival week with the familiar ritual of the 'Entierro del Chanquete' taking place on La Calahonda beach amongst a flurry of fireworks. This years 'Chanquete' was in the form of a brightly coloured aquarium made by Paco Haro. Sandra Jimena, councillor for popular traditions, thanked everybody involved in the organisation of the carnival and local residents for the massive support that this popular tradition receives.

Joaquín Nebro opens his exhibition to the public - 8th Feb 2013

An exhibition of 62 images by the photographer Joaquín Nebro entitled "Pasos Perdidos" (Lost Steps) has been opened for public viewing in the municipal exhibition hall until 28th February. The exhibition has been organised by the Unicaja Foundation and shows black and white scenes from around the world. The images can be viewed from 11am to 1pm and from 6pm to 8pm.

The Junta de Andalucia cuts beach funding - 4th Feb 2013

The councillor responsible for Nerja's beaches, Nieves Atencia, has announced that this year the Junta de Andalucia has not provided any funding for vital services required for the safe use and enjoyment of the areas beaches, meaning that Nerja itself must take on this cost, estimated to be €100,000. These services include the placement of buoys to segregate swimmers and boats and the daily beach cleaning carried out through the summer months.

More details of the Nerja Caves Music and Dance festival - 1st Feb 2013

Following last weeks promotional visit to the FITUR international tourism fair by officials from the Caves Foundation, more details have become available on this years festival which is set to start on 24th July. The initial performance will be a classical concert featuring the acclaimed Clarinettist Ferdinand Steiner accompanied by a string quartet. From here on performances include ballet, classical guitar and a visit by the Malaga symphony orchestra. The music and dance festival is the biggest event in the caves diary each year and despite the economic troubles still counts on a sizeable budget.

Nerja's new health centre on hold for another year - 31st Jan 2013

Following a meeting between the local councillor for Health and representatives from the provincial government it has been announced that there is no funding this year for the development of Nerja's long awaited new health centre and indeed no funding available for the proposed lift in the current health centre either. It's a considerable blow given the money that Nerja has already spent preparing the chosen site for development.

Nerja's Carnival almost ready for the off - 30th Jan 2013

The date for Nerja's Carnival is fast approaching with this popular Pre-Easter fiesta officially starting on 7th February. Take a look at our carnival page for more details of events over this period.
