The Socialist Party calls for bus station improvements - 10th Dec 2012
The Socialist Party of Nerja has now submitted a proposal at the town hall with the aim of pushing at least some of the promised improvements to Nerja's bus stop/station forwards. Pedro Romón has highlighted in his motion that extra seating should be available for waiting passengers as well as shelter from the sun and rain as a minimum until further, more comprehensive improvements can be made.
Exhibition halls open their Nativity Scene to the public - 8th Dec 2012
The customary nativity scene held in the Sala de Exposiciones is now open for public viewing. This nativity scene known in Spanish as a 'belén' is one of the oldest in the town with the 50 clay figures being over 100 years old. The figures, made available by MarÃa Concepción RodrÃguez Jaime have been arranged by José Miguel Ortuño.
Spain celebrates its Constitution Day - 6th Dec 2012
Today marks Spain's Constitution Day with events going on all over the country to mark this important day in the national calender. Here in Nerja there will be a number of events with local children getting involved in various ceremonies and readings and the Municipal Band playing at the Town Hall. The day does mean however that many local businesses will be closed.
Canal Sur's cameras make another visit - 5th Dec 2012
The Spanish television station Canal Sur is set to return to the municipality in order to record a special program for the series 'Este es mi pueblo' (This is my village) about Nerja, its history and beauty. Filming is set to last three to four days taking in the most beautiful corners of the municipality including the Balcón de Europa, the Nerja Caves and municipalities beaches.
Nerja kicks off its Christmas schedule - 4th Dec 2012
The Nerja Association for Cultural Action this week has started the Christmas Ball rolling by opening for public viewing this years Nativity scene in the Cultural Centre which is available for viewing both morning and afternoon and during evening performances. This marks the beginning of the towns Christmas activities with shows on the 7th and 8th by the Academy of Daniel Romero and the flamenco night of Belén Heredia respectively.
Bancosol and La Caixa start their food collection campaign - 30th Nov 2012
From today Bancosol and La Caixa foundation have started their âgreat collectionâ with the aim of gathering up to 150 tonnes of non-perishable food to be given out to families in the region who have been worst hit by the financial crisis. The campaign stretches throughout the province and counts on the support of some 1500 volunteers. In Nerja you can leave your donations in MAS or in either of the Supersol supermarkets.
David MartÃnez concert - 29th Nov 2012
The internationally known classical guitarist David MartÃnez, considered to be one of the finest of his generation, will be giving his final scheduled concert of the year tomorrow at the Cultural Centre from 9pm. The entrance fee to see this award winning local artist is 10 Euros.
Civil Protection carries out mountain rescue - 29th Nov 2012
This afternoon the Civil Protection unit of Nerja was called upon to aid a 59 year old visitor from Madrid who found himself in trouble whilst hiking in the Rio Chillar area known as the Cuesta de los Galgos. Following a fall the man lost consciousness and required the assistance of the local emergency services. Fortunately the accident occurred in an area with mobile phone coverage and the manâs wife, who was accompanying him, raised the alarm. Following a check at the Medical centre in Nerja he was transported to the Hospital Comarcal de la AxarquÃa for further checks.
Town Hall looks to improve Plaza de los Cangrejos - 28th Nov 2012
Nieves Atencia, councillor with responsibility for Nerjaâs beaches, has announced that she is seeking funding for improvements to the deteriorating hand rails in the area of Plaza de los Cangrejos and La Torrecilla. In recent years the existing hand rails installed by the authority in charge of AndalucÃaâs coast line have become quite an eyesore thanks to the wear and tear of the elements. The Town Hall has taken it upon itself to swap out old for new but is now seeking assistance from the authority in the second phase of these improvements given that the original materials chosen by the authority were clearly not adequate for a location so close to the sea.
EQUO wonât let up on Nerjaâs water treatment plant - 26th Nov 2012
The Nerja branch of EQUO, a social and political group who campaign for sustainability, human rights and the up keeping of democracy, have warned that despite the great gains made in the recent months on the long awaited waste water plant there is still a long journey to be made until work commences. The group has made clear that they will not let up on the project and will continue to push for its completion.
Travel agents visit the Caves - 24th Nov 2012
The Spanish wing of the Kuoni travel group have clubbed together with counterparts in Thailand to organise a special visit for eleven Thai travel agents to Nerja. The aim of the visit is to promote Nerja and the Costa del Sol region to new potential visitors throughout Thailand, a country which is increasingly taking an interest in Southern Spain as a holiday destination. A trip to the Nerja Caves was at the top of the list of activities planned for the visitors giving them a first-hand taste of this archaeologically and scientifically important natural attraction.
Storm damage estimated at over €800,000 - 23rd Nov 2012
The Town Hallâs department for infrastructure has calculated damages to the municipality following last weekendâs torrential rain to be in the region of €848,000. The majority of the costs arise from necessary repairs following landslides at the Burriana entrance to the Chimenea urbanisation and the Maro beach road access. Today local government has approved a motion to apply for assistance in this matter from both the Junta de Andalucia and National Government.
