Local Business looks ahead to the Christmas period - 21st Nov 2012

A meeting was held yesterday in the Town Hall to discuss the arrangements for the up and coming Christmas festivities with various ideas put forward as to how best present Nerja to visitors and encourage local trade. Amongst the suggestions were the holding of holiday contests, allowing shops in pedestrian areas to use space in the street and the possibility of holding a second 'feria de oportunidades' (outlet fair) following on from the success of the original held in February.

Weekend of rain causes damage all over Nerja - 19th Nov 2012

This weekends heavy rain has had a significant effect on Nerja with damage being reported all over the municipality, including flooding in the church of El Salvador and various other buildings.
A number of landslides left urbanizations including Punta Lara, San Juan de Capistrano and Fuente del Badén cut off from the outside world until local services, who worked feverishly throughout yesterday, could clear the blockages although the road from Burriana to the Chimenea Urbanization remains closed.
There was damage to El Playazo and the Paseo Maritimo of Burriana Beach with the N340 being closed due to landslides in two places. The access road to the Nerja Caves was also closed until 11am yesterday.

General workers strike shows little impact on Nerja - 14th Nov 2012

Today’s nationwide strike seems to have passed by causing very little disruption to services in Nerja with the vast majority of workers choosing not to exercise their right to strike. The Town Hall opened its doors for business this morning with all departments able to function normally and in many cases fully staffed. This also extended to the utility companies, the Nerja Caves and the many bars, restaurants and supermarkets that all opened this morning as normal.

New firemen for Nerja - 13th Nov 2012

Nerja is set to expand its current fire fighting and fire prevention resources increasing the number of personnel from its current figure of 9 to 15 staff. The provisional base for the current service, located on the Burriana beach roundabout, is also expected to expand to accommodate the new fire fighters with Inocencia Quintero, councillor for firemen and Civil Protection, adding that 'Nerja needs an adequate fire station to serve the municipality and the those that neighbour it'.

Medical Centre back on the agenda - 13th Nov 2012

The Town Hall has again called for the Junta de Andalusia to fulfil its commitments regarding the new Medical Centre. The site, currently used as a car park, was prepared some time ago by the Town Hall at a cost of 236,000 Euros and has waited since 2009 for construction work to commence. Frustration is growing within local government due to the long list of excuses given by the Junta concerning a project that should already be well under way.

Burriana Car Park edges closer - 12th Nov 2012

The process of selection for the developer of the planned subterranean Car Park in Burriana is continuing to gather steam with news that the consortium 'Sardilla Española and Site' will likely be awarded the contract with their quote for the works of 2,495,165 Euros. The new parking facility will make 200 new spaces available in the area and will be Nerja's fourth underground car park.

Scruffs 2012 - 12th Nov 2012

Last Saturday saw the third staging of the Scruffs dog show by C.A.S (Costa Animal Society) in association with the Department of Residents of Nerja. There were lots of categories for the entrants to fight over including best mutt, best puppy and best costume as well as lots of other, more peculiar contests. As well as the showing, there was also the opportunity for the pets of both locals and foreigners to display their skill and obedience to enthusiastic onlookers.

Nerja business leaders meet with Natural Park manager - 7th Nov 2012

The plan for the use and management of the Natural Park Sierra Almijara has been in the sights of local entrepreneurs recently prompting the meeting between the two parties to relay concerns related to the subject, the primary issue being the perceived under use of the Natural Park as a tourist resource. The natural park manager, Ricardo Salas, reported on the progress of the plan which is currently under development as well as the state of the facilities currently on offer to visitors whilst local business offered to get involved in the production and distribution of information useful to tourists.

Cultural centre hosts local choirs - 6th Nov 2012

This Friday the Centro Cultural Villa de Nerja will be hosting an evening organised by the Peña Nerjeña choir who will perform along with two other choirs a repertoire of their favourite works. The event is intended to raise funds for the Brotherhood of the Virgen del Carmen of Nerja and will start at 9pm with tickets costing 5 Euros.

Town hall looks to lower risk of summer fires - 5th Nov 2012

The Town Hall has filed a motion with the regional government to invest in work to clear the National Park of the Sierras Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama of materials which commonly provoke summer fires following the events of this summer in the western regions of the Costa del Sol. Nieves Atencia, councillor for the environment, explained that with the declaration of the area as a national park, local trades that formerly carried out this work can no longer operate leaving the area susceptible to fire. She further argues that prevention of such fires results 70% cheaper than extinction.

Guardia Civil intercepts drugs boat - 3rd Nov 2012

The boat was intercepted close to 'La Cala del Lobo Marino' in the Burriana area in the early hours of Friday 2nd November and later moved to El Playazo beach where, during a full search of the vessel, some 1,600 kilos of Hashish were discovered. Two individuals have been detained in connection with the matter although the case still remains open.
It's been a successful few days for the Axarquia's anti-drug campaign with four individuals being detained in Torrox earlier in the week following the discovery of 200 kilos of marijuana and a number of plants in an apparent 'home production' operation.

Vampires, Werewolves and Zombies - 1st Nov 2012

This years 'Fiesta de la Castaña y el Boniato' continued to build on the success of previous years with the town square in Maro filling with all sorts of frightening apparitions turning out to enjoy the music, roast chestnuts and sweet potatoes. The fiesta commonly know as Maroween thanks to its shared date with Halloween was also covered by 'Canal Sur' who televised the party all over Andalucia.
