Another step closer for Nerja's water treatment plant - 1st Nov 2012
The Ministry of the Environment has officially awarded the contract for the development of the plant to the joint venture proposed by Corsan-Corviam-Isolux. Although this decision had already been widely known the official decision represents another step closer to the long awaited plant. From here on the decision is open for public consultation as required by law before the contract is signed, after which the joint venture has a period of three months to submit their final project plans. Following approval, work can begin. Thirty months has been agreed upon as the time scale for the completion of the waste water plant which is projected to cost some 23 million Euros.
Cuevas de Nerja set to participate in Science Week - 30th Oct 2012
As part of the upcoming Andalusian Science Week the Nerja Caves foundation has prepared three events to be held in the Nerja Museum from the 7th â 15th November which aim to highlight to the public the importance of the continued scientific work being carried out and the unquestionable value of the discoveries being made. The activities are free although do require a prior reservation. For more information visit the Nerja Museum.
Maroween 2012 ready for kick off - 29th Oct 2012
Preparations are being finalized for this years Fiesta de la Castaña y el Boniato, otherwise known as Maroween, in the main square in Maro village on October 31st. From 6pm there will be music and dancing with Roast chestnuts and Sweet potatoes available for party goers to enjoy.
Nerjadanza kicks off - 25th Oct 2012
The first performances of this years NerjaDanza festival were enjoyed by onlookers on the Balcón de Europa taking full advantage of a lull in the rain with the Galician dancer Anuska Alonso performing a piece called 'Quando Corpus'. There was also a performance at the Cultural Center where Fernando Hurtado's company staged the play 'Visitando otros jardines' for local students.
European Heritage Days - 23rd Oct 2012
This 27th October the Nerja Museum will be offering free admission to visitors throughout the day as part of a celebration of European Heritage. Visitors can take a tour of the museum and see prehistoric pieces discovered in the area as well as view replicas of important archaeological finds.
Chang Chih Chen photo exposition - 23rd Oct 2012
The Villa de Nerja Cultural Centre is hosting a collection of the Taiwanese photographers work as part of this years Nerjadanza festival until the 28th October. Twenty four photographs will be on display to the public from the 2011 Prix de la Photographie award winning artist.
Road works approved - 22nd Oct 2012
The local Councillor for Infrastructure, Antonio Garcia, has announced the approval of work to improve infrastructure services and drainage in the street that joins Calle El Barrio with Calle Castilla Pérez y Antonio Millón. The work will be carried out according to existing plans with a budget of 275,000 Euros over a period of four months. The Town Hall indicated that the works should be completed before the summer. Once finished the street will remain for pedestrians only.
Local police crack down on unauthorized trading - 20th Oct 2012
Over the summer period (21st July to 30th September) the crack down carried out by local police on illegal street trading in the town showed significant results with over 100 separate instances leading to confiscation of goods. Sunglasses, clothes and CD's/DVD'S made up the bulk of the confiscations with the majority of illegal traders being caught in the areas of Burriana and the Balcon de Europa.
The 'Silver Queen' arrives in Nerja - 19th Oct 2012
The 'Arcos de Buenos Aires' theatre company has brought its show 'Silver Queen' to the Nerja Cultural Centre for a performance on 20th October starting at 9pm. The show is a mix of Argentine music and dance including Ballet and music from the 'Camara de Cuerdas' orchestra. Tickets for the show cost 10 euros and are available from the venue.
Nerjadanza brings modern dance to the region - 18th Oct 2012
Councillor for Education and Culture, Gema Garcia, has presented the schedule for the eighth edition of the modern dance festival 'Nerjadanza'. Events will take place between the 24th and 27th October with most of the activities being held on the Balcon de Europa and in the Villa de Nerja Cultural Centre. This edition will include both local and international artists from as far away as Taiwan.
Waste collection set to improve - 18th Oct 2012
As part of a forthcoming environmental awareness campaign local government officials have agreed to increase the number of rubbish bins throughout the town to further improve the waste collection service. This will include some 100 rubbish bins specifically for organic waste and 50 more bins for a variety of other materials. Included in the improvements will also be a mobile treatment plant as well as services to remove construction waste.
Nerja businesses ask for a level playing field - 17th Oct 2012
The business association of Nerja has sent a letter to the Ministry of Trade and Tourism of Andalusia highlighting the need for a 'Plan Qualifica' for the development of tourism in the region. The association has volunteered all the help necessary for the creation of such a plan which would be similar to the scheme provided for the western Costa del Sol. Business leaders have voiced their complaints that the eastern coast has yet again been forgotten by the regional government with 32 million Euros currently funding improvements to other coastal areas of Andalusia.
